  1. I believe you should keep possession and security of your log book, you should make the entries. The instructor / flight school should have their own record and lesson notes for you that they keep.

I agree with Blueadventres. Keep your log book yourself. When RQAC/ Airline Academy of Aust went bust a few years ago pilots training there who had their log books at the club had problems getting them back after the receivers moved in and closed the premises.

  2. I might give this a try. Saves having to re lock wire the plug too. I remember when I was in the UK in the 70s they used to do 5 minute oil changes at some service stations by putting a tube gown the dipstick hole to suck the old oil out. It didn't include a new filter but I think back then they were the old internal type and you had to remove the casing to get it out invariably spilling oil everywhere.

I remember the Sydney Taxis doing the 5 minute oil changes by sucking it out the dipstick tube back in the mid 1960's

  3. Let me start by saying I used to be an auto electrician, so not too concerned with basic electrical theory etc. What I will need though is some sort of guide, online or otherwise for the conventions of aircraft wiring. And then where to buy supplies like wire? I was looking at aircraft spruce but didn't know where to start! This is for a kit plane if that matters

Tefzel aircraft wire is available from Ian's "Clear Prop " shop here in most gauges by the metre.

  4. So I added up the costs of my PPL. It's come to about $33,000. No wonder my bank account is looking rather sad. I have almost 75 hours total experience in my logbook.I was told this would be roughly what the cost would be and only about 10% more than I was told. Given that my whole flow was disrupted by the RQAC bankruptcy, I think that's come out OK.

There's many oddities that I've found going back. Some can be reconciled with the RQAC invoicing going crazy just before they went under.

The most direct oddity is the landing fees. I was charged pretty much always $33 for landing fees at Archerfield. Now if you look at this document:

    http://www.archerfieldairport.com.au/Downloads/Schedule of charges.pdf

for a 2300lbs MTOW aircraft the charge should be $14.39. Sure it's only $19 per flight, but where did it actually go? Also, some of the other fields I was charged $15ish but I haven't found out exactly what their landing fee schedules are.

I'm still very confused as to how it comes out that private hire (excluding landing fees & taxes) of C172s comes out to be almost $300. Perhaps it's the insurance. But given some guestimates based on google for tiedowns/insurance/oil/fuel and including a fair margin for profit it works out to over $10,000 in other costs on average for each 100 hourly/annual which would be maintenance/parts/rego. Does this sound right?

There is also an Airservices Tower fee of approx $17 as well as the AAC landing charge for each full stop landing at Archerfield. Total charge for C172 approx $34.

  5. I flew with Chieftain between 1975 and 1978. Unless they changed it the gatekeeper was a Navy Sea Venom. I flew a Cherokee 140 , Grumman Tiger, Cherokee Arrow and C182.I recall doing a BFR out towards Warragamba Dam in this very aircraft :

I did a check flight in VH-CUC late 1967. Chieftain had only just started then and the aircraft was brand new.

Did most of my flying then at Aircraft Rentals.

  6. I believe you correct in your worry. Progressively little bits at a time all in the opinion of a couple of people's opinions of SAFETY and what is even more concerning "at the instigation of RAA itself".

Suppose the Tech Manager is pushing for this ?
