  1. Thanks Brent. I think you hit the nail on the head as my AVMAP is not aquiring satellites since I updated it..I have emailed AVMAP , I think its just a config. problem, it's a bugger to solve as the antenna is fixed in the aeroplane 50minutes drive away....Geoff
  2. OK so I removed the Icom A-6 I was having all the problems with. (not the Icom's fault) . I bought a Microair M760. Great unit, so light . A real fiddle for me to fit as it had to go in to the dash from the front. (not enough space to get it in from behind.) Anyway it worked from the moment I switched it on. Lovely, no feedback, lovely clear signal, easy to use ect....(watch out, the drawing in the booklet and on the net is wrong!!! How could they do that?) BUT when I switch on my AVMAP I get a hiss plus pulsing sound all the time, wont squelch out, The sound stops the moment I switch the gps off, (which is run by internal batteries) The radio and the gps antenna cables run close together, could that do it? Any help much appreciated. regards....Geoffrey......
  3. don't worry about a thing! every thing is going to be alright!................I have decided that it's all too much buggering around to get a mediocre system at best... I have done what I should have done in the first place. that is bought a dedicated aviation inbuilt radio. ....Micro air..as that is what I have done all my training with.Should arrive in an hour or so...Just goes to show that the cheapest way is not always the cheapest way!...I have learned much from the exercise!..You just have to be CERTAIN that the radio is working properly..I never got past just HOPING that it was operating correctly. The radio itself (A-6) worked fine , it's just that I was asking it to be something it was never meant to be....Thank you all for your help and assistance....Geoffrey
  4. Thanks for the input, No, if the radio 11v supply fails it will not fall back on the battery supply. I agree it should. It's all very difficult, especially as the power supply guys requires $250 plus for the item..I paid 750 for the A-6 plus leads and intercom, So, already a gorilla down the tubes..What an idiot, By trying to save you lose? I seem to have heard that before.. Be warned everybody.....The short way is not always the quickest way.....Geoff
  5. voltage via Zulu 1 With reference to the wiring diagram posted by Zulu 1....The bloke that is making it for me just rang and said that "if the input voltage drops below 12.5 volts then the output will be zero.!!" So if your battery is a little down and your engine stops (or the alternator fails) then you cannot transmit! This is NOT a good thing..I would love to hear that he is incorrect?...... I am ready to chuck the whole project in a draw and buy Xcom..any comments would be welcome...Geoffrey...
  6. what is the address for the seller you mentioned? I can't find it at all....thanks, Geoff
  7. forget it I really think you are pushing your luck trying to build a generator! Wow! what an undertaking..and where would you put the regulator? ... If you cant fit a battery (and why not? small sealed batteries can be mounted anywhere and at any angle..even a pack of nicads would do it. ) On my boat (from a previous life) I had a rubbery squeeze thing in the fuel line to remove vapour locks.. Check out a big boat place...That worked fine.....Geoff
  8. JR MOBILE, The files (AEL and ACE) do not have to be extracted. I put my new ones on the desktop, put the card in the card reader and replaced the old ones with the new ones, deleting the old ones from the card...Everything was very simple to do ( IT must have been , I did it!) Geoffreywh
  9. I now have airfield both licenced and unlicenced, The procedure for updating is incredibly simple. ,.............................f the update is freely available how can there be copywrite/panic situations?
  10. unlicensed airfields/avmap yes of course. Geeoff
  11. AvMap were so kind as to send me the file that is reported to contain all the unlicensed airfields. It is an AEL file (whatever that may be) All I have to do now is get it into the AvMap. If anybody wants a copy?
  12. WHATEVER you do, don't get Icom handheld, It's just not suitable, I have innumerable problems, I so wish I had bought XCOM......Geoff
  13. hold my handheld , tightly Yes I can see that hand helds CAN be made to work. I wonder if it's worth the bother. Probably hand helds should be just that:- handheld, on the ground.....I am so disappointed with the guy at Moorabbin SKYSHOP. He sold me the radio knowing about the feedback problems as he gave me a ferrite clip to put around the headset cables. Didn't work though. Only my D/C headset works, but I have been told I'm still not transmitting. (receiving is just fine, ) It looks like if you use the headset cable on the A-6 then you HAVE to use a remote PTT button as well?. I read somewhere to turn the sidetone to zero...Geoff.
  14. I have been reading about AVMAP updates and airfields. I just got a reply from "sopporto technico" (..I was inquiring about doing my first free update ) AvMAP say that there are NO airfields available for Australia. There ARE working on it , but don't hold your breath. I have read in this forum that these unlicenced airfields are available as an update..? What is the truth of the matter...Does anybody know FOR CERTAIN....I really really would like them on my Avmap...If fact I consider them mandatory...Geoff
  15. I can't get this WINRAR ACE file to open either, do I need a different program. I got all excited about having unlicenced airfields in my database....Geoff
  16. yes, well ! I know you are writing english as I recognise some of the words! Otherwise I have no idea what you are talking about, I thought, for a start, that the radio uses 7v olt?...thanks Geoff
  17. I found this lovely piece of information on an American website that deals with aviation radio problems. They are answering questions about Icom A-6 and A24 radios in ultralights and trikes A6 or A24 radio squeals when I transmit! Miniaturisation of handheld radio transceivers reached a new level with the intriduction of the A6 and A24 radios. Unfortunately, to miniaturise the radio Icom also had to miniaturise the batteries, and to get enough battery life, they had to go to a 7.2 volt battery pack. The problem is, most GA headsets are designed to expect about 9 volts available from the radio, and without this voltage, many do not work well, and a side result is usually that RF energy from the radio antenna gets into the mike circuit, causing a squeal. Icom know about the problem, but there is no fix except fitting a remote antenna and getting it as far away from the headset and leads as possible. We do NOT recommend this transceiver for use with a headset. Isn't that nice to read after the guy in the shop assured me that I can use the A6 in a cockpit and even sold me an intercom to connect to it..none of which work at all well....Geoff
  18. feedback I too, am trying to use an A6 with a headset, and I'm having all sorts of problems. First the transmit feedback is caused (so Icom tell me) by the type of head set used/ My new Altronics is unusable. The old David Clark set that I have is fine. Plus I have transmit problems. It appears that I cannot use a headset without using a PTT button. I tried yesterday using the inbuilt PTT button/headset combination and found after I had landed that I was not transmitting. Although the little tx signal was coming up on the screen. (reception was terrific) . I wish I had not gone down this path. It's spoiling my flying not knowing if I'm transmitting or not! I may chuck all this in a drawer and get an inbuilt set!!..Geoff:crying:
  19. 25 degrees full advance is NOT much in the way of advance in modern engines. Modern motorcycle engines REGULARLY run 38 degrees of advance and 11-1 + compression ratio. Plus they do it on regular unleaded.(91 octane) I have not seen one worn out through normal use (racing or street) in many years....
  20. As far as I could determine the BP and the caltex brands BOTH include an undisclosed amount (up to 10%) of ethanol/methanol. Shell unleaded however did not. I have been running my cont. 0-200 on unleaded MOGAS for some time, very clean plugs are a bonus...In my experience ( 50years in the motorcycle industry) Unleaded took somewhat longer to "go-off" than 2 weeks.I guestimate 6-12weeks MAYBE a shorter period might be valid in summer..I could not say about that....Geoff
  21. I made competition model aircraft for years from carbon cloth impregnated with epoxy, when something went quite wrong the wing D boxes would shatter and look like shredded wheat. BUT it depended which type of epoxy was used and the curing method.

there is NO hangarage available at Tyabb...........how about Riddels creek or Mangalore as the nearest?
  24. I did exactly the same, The most courteous people I have dealt with in a long time..........
  25. Ahh Riddels creek, That is Sundbury is it not? Gee its a long way away!..What has happened to Wallan? No telephone no emails. Has the owner finally managed to get it developed? I saw he was trying in 2004 to put 2500 houses on it. At about 80,000 dollars per block it makes very good monetary sense! That's only 85 k's away...
