  1. I would have if I knew how to do it!....Thanks for doing it...The AIP is FULL of relevant info for RAA There are some GREAT large scale coloured maps of the Melbourne VFR routes with explanations, reporting points and frequencies. Just great. I wonder why I wasn't told about the publication in training, could have saved me heaps of grief...(ask me how)...!
  2. dont worry I found it.... under Airservices
  3. Is AIP available to read online? Where would I be able to get a look at a copy? any ideas
  4. I downloaded the airfield database and printed it out (Vic. only) . I was planning to enter them into my Avmap. but the coordinates seem to make no sense, Or am I looking at them incorrectly? The data base places Apollo bay out in the ocean. What have I got wrong?
  5. it was me It was stupid me! I put the new files in the wrong folder and that stopped the software loading...I should not play with things I don't really understand.G
  6. Yes I was going to say that!......My Jodel was started 40 years ago, Built using spruce, birch ply and resorcinol glue...Still looks perfect, I have many test pieces to check, not a single sign of aging apart from a darkening of the wood. ...That's 40 years old NOW , I would say it should be good for 80 years at the rate it's deteriorating!... I have model aircraft from the late sixties built using epoxy. The cheap stuff went rubbery but Araldite is still as it was when it set...Bit darker in colour....Wood is really the best aeroplane building material although it's getting scarcer and dearer.. But then so is everything that is good.......
  7. Like a fool I went to update the software on my Avmap 4, Lovely, latest download from their website. Popped the card in the reader and transferred the files. Put the card back in the Avmap and I get "Device not present, please verify". The message according to the manual means there is no card present. Stupid electronics! Of course there bloody well is! Even if I had buggered the card up somehow it should give me a message about faulty card. Not "there is no card present...god I hate computer things..great while they work...Can anybody help?.......................Please....G
  8. As far as I can tell the life span has not been determined yet. It must be well over 50 years...............I read about Jodels from the fifties still flying happily around, BUT they MUST be kept dry! Get it wet and it will rot.
  9. does anyone know if these files (airfields) can be loaded into my AVMAP, yes? then how? Some of them are already there but many are not....Geoff
  10. what a good weather site, thanks...G
  11. I saw, a little while ago, a thread on VG's, Here is my take...I have always been a fan of aerodynamic aids since I flew competition free flight glider. (20 years!) I helped develop them in Europe around the early-mid seventies, after seeing the effects I never built one without them fitted. The reason for the story is that I have just today fitted a set of stolspeed plastic feathers to my Jodel. I noticed that the Jodel (although supposedly having an engine off stall speed of 33 knots) would just stop flying at about 42-44 and just drop onto the runway from whatever height I happened to be at at the time. It was supposed to be better than that!. The end result was that I landed, wheeler style, at between 46-50+ knots. I didn't dare come in any slower...I fitted the feathers as instructed. Although I only had time for a brief test the results were astonishing!..I had previously (many times) tried stalling the Jodel.. Always I ended ( @ approx. 1000rpm ) at 40+ and sink speed of 400fpm. Today, I had the stick back in my stomach with the ASI reading 26 knots, also with 400 fpm sink...Just ridiculous angle of attack..The landing was odd, 50 over the fence, as usual. I floated and floated and almost had to go around as the runway disappeared beneath me. I believe that I had increased climb of approx 150ft.p.m. But one take off doesn't make a summer!...What has happened to cruise speed and consumption I will be interested to find out as there was too much low cloud to continue today...Interesting things, VG's...Geoffrey
  12. nice to see another Jodel owner...welcome.G
  13. I wouldn't get anything associated with "pilots watch" they're useless rubbish..I have one...I believe the electric motor in it causes radio noise...Get a mechanical watch at least 42mm dia. prefer white face black numbers, should have arabic numerials and show individual minutes. AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE. I got mine, an ARBUTUS made in USA from "Grays online for $75 an absolute beauty.....look at Junkers from Germany...very similar...Good luck...G
  14. I was hoping to see a translation into plain english. The area 30 forecast can be confusing and I'm afraid I might accidentally miss something of importance...G
  15. how do I get weather for area 30? When I click on in Australia I can't get anything for area 30 I can get all big airports. But there's only visibility, wind direction . dew point, No cloud information. no forecast. where am I going wrong?
  16. Found it... it's OK I know about the low impedence thing, I have a donor headset, an old H10-80 4 kilo jobbie. I used the mike and earphones from them. I HAVE found a female U/174 socket. No less than 40 something dollars!.. EDMO were very knowledgeable, helpful and tried hard but had no stock....The whole point was to keep all the leads as simple and as short as possible. The cost wasn't a major factor. Found a wholesaler that would only sell me four ($100!) I should have just made one. Would have been quicker (and better!) ...
  17. $160? wow, but that's the lead with plugs. I just want the NATO socket........should be about $15....Anybody know where I can get one..(Apart from Moorabbin?)
  18. I tried jaycar already, only sound equipment plugs there. I don't think Dick Smith stocks components anymore
  19. What a great explanation of a complex subject, Thanks, G
  20. The length of cable that I actually need is about 2 feet, so any excess hangs down beside me. There is already a 3ft. coiled cable, battery box then another coiled cable, it's all getting a bit much. I soo dislike extra connections and I'll go a long way to eliminated any, Funnily enough I was at Moorabbin yesterday I went to a radio / avionics repair place and, yes,in a dusty old box they had the socket I needed (NATO jack) But no, the woman would not sell it to me as she didn't know how much it was worth!!!! I offered lots of bucks but no, wouldn't go with it. I said well send me a bill. To no avail, in the end I told her she might want to put it in that dusty old box she has....For future reference so to speak. Buy Australian? If you can!
  21. Solved... No, the website doesn't say which is mike HI and mike LOW ect. But seeing as there are only two wires to get mixed up ( I already know from the old twin plug set-up which are mike and which are headphone) I can only get each pair wrong once! I seem to have answered my own question .......................So Thanks again ....G
  22. Hmmm. Sorry, Love to help BUT but the headset (David Clark H10-76XL) was $US230. new! (converts to $1876.22 ?) So I just can't help, however much I like to buy in Australia. I did just open the box and find a diagram! all I need to know now is:- how do I tell which wire is mic. hi and mic. low, phone hi and phone low? maybe I should ask Microair (see... I do buy Australian when it's economically viable) Geoff....
  23. Don't worry about it, A gentle bend of the (already bent) mounting bracket lines the cable up sufficiently to stop me worrying...
  24. Hi, I just bought a David Clark H10-76XL headset, I know the mike will need changing for GA aircraft, the headset lead also ends in a U-174/U (helicopter or US military) plug. BUT, rather than extend the lead with an adapter, I would prefer to change the plug on my dash. From two jack plug receptors to a single (4 contact ) helicopter one. I can get the socket easily. Plus I have a diagram of which wire goes where on the helicopter plug.. BUT, How do I identify which wire is which from the (single ) cable.....Or I could change the whole lead to a GA ( I have an old donor headset ) Again I would need some wiring explanation, Can anybody help?........Geoff
