  1. I picked up the iPad on Saturday morning to plan a short trip and found the new route planning page quite confusing. When I brought up the old-style one leg-one line plan and imported the winds, the wind direction imported made no sense and was contrary to that shown on Windy. When I left the iPad home and flew the route from memory it confirmed that Windy was spot-on. Anyone else had this happen?

As another "old fart" (or at least aging), and a VFR only flier, I also am feeling that OzRunways is going the way of Windows 10 - Lots of whiz-bang stuff that is 80+% unused and only confuses the core role of flight planning and flight following.

I support the call for an OzRunways Lite.

It’s taken me a little while to get the hang of it, too, but I think I have it sorted.

It does seem to take extra steps to get where the previous version arrived straight away and I guess its Cranked up design Is a little bit about having the shiniest new toy on the block.

But I still love OR so I’ll keep on persevering.

I love my old Garmin 295, too ?

(Note the GS, guys...I thought the dear old thing had been supercharged)

  2. “It remains to be seen though, just what the lawsuit payouts will run into when they are finally arrived at, for pax that were millionaires and billionaires, and whose relatives will put in claims for multiple hundreds of millions.

Those payout figures will make IFR certification look cheap.”

Reminds me of a fairly recent at Hotham, at Essendon, at....

  3. Yes Turbs...I was watching my height to remain visual with ground versus height of the hills on the way in. Some of the hills rise 1000’ above the plains. A particularly heavy patch rolled towards me and that made the decision easy.

I think both the heavies made it in after I left ...I was back on Area...but I wasn’t prepared to have another attempt. I had nav lights and landing light on to make myself a little more visible.

It was a bit bumpy in the smoke and under the inversion it caused. Good flying conditions once I could climb back to 4500’ towards YWG with 10 KN tailwind.

  4. I fitted LED globes to my nav lights just a few weeks ago. Globes are bayonet type and went straight in.

The increase in brightness was phenomenal.

Now question: I have twin Hella spots for my landing light. Does anyone know if an LED replacement Is available?

    Thanks

  5. I've been told atc in Australia are very reluctant to handout special vfr clearance.

    Not sure how true.....

    Hi

i got SVFR out of Moorabbin a couple of years ago. Coastal fog/smog and low cloud in the basin.

Tower sent a light twin to check out and let me go when it returned. VIS about 2km. Base about 1000 south rising to 1200 north.

He asked me what height I wanted. I said I was happy with 1200 and He cleared me SHEPP via Coldstream.. Weather improved considerably as I tracked NE over suburbs and was able to navigate Glenburn Gap to head home. Clear skies north of GBR.

  6. Manufactured during the war doesn't make you anything specifically but does allude to your parents being optimistic, silly, or careless. Nev

My mum told me a number of times that I wouldn’t have happened except “your father came home on leave feeling like that”!

    Does wonders for self-esteem...

  7. Yes condolences to all the family. I actually met the pilot only about 2 months ago. he was visiting another Whittman owner in the hangar behind me at Ycab..It was a very nicely put together aircraft and he was a really nice guy to chat to. From memory he had his son with him.

I believe that we all should have ADSB...the obvious issue is the outrageous cost of the equipment which of course there is no excuse for except profiteering in a captured market. CASA and Air Services have allowed non certified units to be used but of course none are available because the manufacturers would have to discount within their own closed market. The units should be available at way less than half the cost of the certified units as well all know the only difference is a very expensive piece of paper that comes with exactly the same unit. The safety improvements are so much higher and better. They all say we should be as safe as you can be but when it comes to the crunch they all want to screw us over on price.

I remember when ADSB was first floated we (GA) were all going to be given subsidies to encourage fitment.

it would be nice to have ADSB instead of mode C. It would be nice to have a new radio with dual watch and certified GPS and automatic frequency display. It would be nice to have an AH, too. But then I wouldn’t be flying a seat of the pants, antique aeroplane the way they were meant to be flown.

i chuckled recently when YMEN ATC had to ask me to repeat aircraft type (and then the ICAO code) and even then referred to me as the white Cessna. I smiled when they expressed alarm because I slowed  to 50 knots on final to get the flaps out with a following aircraft catching up quickly...”can you go faster?” (No, but I can land right down the end of the runway). It was nice that they organised a “follow me” vehicle to escort me to the parking area after I told them I was the same age as the aeroplane. And I loved the “very nice and sounds nice, too” comment from tower as I was departing!

    Love old aeroplanes ?

  8. FIS...back to the future.

good on the controller for taking on this job where Probably not familiar with many civil aircraft in the Area.

Is the controller physically located at YBNS and have they established temporary radar coverage at Bairnsdale or are they relying on East Sale?

    fly safe

  9. Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't have any links to parties or cases so not quite sure what you are referring to there.

I also understand that ASQA won't do anything with complaints and there advice is to go through the complaints process of the institution (in this case Box Hill).

Rule is cover all bases. Class action might need to think about an injunction restraining sale of aircraft. Expensive business for an individual.

  10. I'm one of the students "left in the lurch". I had no issues with Soar or the processes they were following. Soar were a whole lot safer than the school I came from prior who would consistently allow flights to go out over MTOW. However I do take exception to their statement saying "they are doing everything possible to assist the students impacted". Neither Box Hill nor Soar have made any formal statement to any student other than what was written in the BHI letter. They both seem to be passing the buck to the other and communication has been non existent. I have an $18K debt now that needs to be refunded given my course was cancelled in the middle of the semester but who knows what will happen with that debt (no one is talking at this stage).

    Hi Toppee

i have received some details of issues affecting another student...particularly the amount pre-paid for tuition not received...but also understand there is a VCAT matter in process.

would appreciate any link you have to that including parties, case number and stage it’s at, please.

I’m just offering this as a personal opinion but you might be well-served to contact Gordon Legal re a class action they are running, especially if you have concerns about services already delivered. Also might consider making your own application to VCAT to recover money paid for services not yet delivered. Suggest you also write to the ASQA so your complaint is on record as their are time constraints involved.

  11. Because this may have been the cheapest way for the teaching institution to give the ILLUSION that students will get their cpl with the knowledge they probably won't.....

There are reputable and professional FTS’s offering RA time towards PPL and beyond because it is a much cheaper alternative for building early hours.

What’s important is the steady progression through the syllabus and responsible transition to GA environment.

The hoped for advantage of using the VET system is the ability to do continuous training and pay the loan back later rather than having to scrape funds together as possible and learn part time.

  12. The moral of the story for prospective CPL’s is that they should look very closely at VET fee help offers such as these. Balance the advertising against the facts and actually talk to other clients of these businesses directly. Don’t trust web-based reviews.

There are legitimate courses being offered with training provided under the fee assistance model but there are traps and pitfalls for the unwary. Once they have your loan money it’s very hard to get it back.
