  1. It is all in Val Dyson-Holland's most excellent "Ground Training Manual - Cross Country Endorsement"! Only $70 from Val on 02 4325 0072. A very good textbook, workbook and reference book on the subject of Navigation, meteorology and flight planning and execution and has a couple of RAA XC trial exams.

1 in 60 is a ratio. the sine of 1 degree (opposite divided by hypotenuse) is 0.01745240643728351281941897851632 or 1 over 57.298688498550183476612683735161 ie around 1 over (in) 60 and is valid for inches, cubits, kms or miles (even steps)

  2. Hey all! This morning the bossman has given me the order to take holidays due to accrued leave by the end of the month (or at least have leave booked by the end of the month). So im enquiring about any RAA schools that will do full time training say over a week or two, at least to get the pilot cert anyway. Also it doesnt have to be IN Sydney, anywhere within a reasonable drive and accomodation is fine.

So if I have to take holidays I might as well make it count.

Oh and on another note, I still have a current Casa ASIC and C1 medical, I know the medical doesnt mean much but does the ASIC carry over to RAA or do I have to get an RAA ASIC? Much like Wharfies and Cruiser Crew have to get a seperate MSIC (marine security id card, same thing, different acronym)?

    Thanks,

ASIC is OK. Try Daves Flying School,

  3. I was by the President representing the then Executive of Caban (NSW Rep and Treasurer), Jarvis (SA Rep and Secretary) and Reid (Tas Rep and President) as a result of having this site...I basically said "stick it" and gave my reply in about 8 pages showing how this site has helped many recreational pilots. It stemmed from a complaint from R otec to CASA that this site was passively promoting illegal flying. This was a year agoI will put myself on the line here and attach the letter and my reply...judge me if you will but I still stand by the faith and belief that this site is helping in so many ways...sure there are some things that I don't always get right like everyone but as long as there is a much higher percentage of things that are good.

    Thanks Ian, very informative.

If nothing else other than the provision of discussion channels (if only I had 24 hours per day to read them) thanks for looking after the tutorials - a great source of info (including LSALT!) should be compulsory reading.

    Keep up the good work

  4. Don,

In an ideal world the board would be up to scratch with reading the standard reports and formulating adhoc requests as required.

The auditor is there to keep everyone honest (despite the fact that there are failures in the audit process - run by bean counters :).

On a board there is a need to have some leadership qualities and the ability to do some strategic development and a lot of other things.

As to the need to have a beauty quest to fill nominated positions on boards, I am not so sure.

The main aim is for a board to keep the staff honest and ensure that the needs of the members are met at the price nominated by the members whithin the guidelines set by the authorities and satisfying the delegations entrusted to the organisation.

I see the point in abolishing state based board nominations but they are there to represent the members and that should include getting out there and pressing the flesh to get feedback and offer support and encouragement (that is part of the reason pollies open schools, halls fetes and cans of jelly beans).

There has been some implied and actual slagging of the board and the members and I really can't see the basis of it. It was good that Ian posted the board summary but not being at NatFly nor at the AGM I can't move my understanding of your issues much further.

I was until recently at the board and management committee end of a large not for profit advocacy operation with a budget and staffing about 20 times bigger than RAAus. It is not easy job to do when head office is in another town and you juggle it with work and family (and the local P&C and scouts). These boards have worked best when the board roles were dished out by the board or mamnagement committee because you avoid silo responsibilities and you allocate the person best able to get the job done. The board is expected to be entrepreneurs and leaders not just cardboard cutouts of their day jobs.

    Cheers

    Col

  5. I can't speak for anyone else but I voted against because it wasn't balancing the board better - it was simply changing the current inbalance to a different one.Cheers

    John

    John (and all)

What do you believe would be needed to obtain better balance on the board?

The lack of discussion about representation is a bit disturbing given the high threshhold needed to change the rules.

    Cheers,

    Col

  6. a test??!!! do u think the representation ratios between the states is ok?....

Why did the proposal to balance the board better (ie Qld down 1, Vic up 1) fail to get the required support at the last AGM? I can't see a point for Vic being under represented the way that it is.

    Cheers

  7. Sigh

Yup. I bought an unlocked phone from the UK then put in a sim card from TPG.'Bloatware' is a term commonly used to describe extra programs installed by companies before sale - davidh10 defined it well. I didn't want a Telstra 'branded' phone with extra Telstra additions that I didn't really feel I needed - extra price, less memory on phone, not for me. If I wanted a phone that had been messed with and locked in by a company/carrier I would've looked at an iphone :stirring pot:

hello Darkly, Bloatware is a term I also use with Gaye Abandon but your use appears to be a bit driven by an anti Telstra attitude rather than knowlege. You haven't, for arguments sake, enumerated those applications you don't like or consider inappropriate, too big etc. and suitable alternates.

You have bought a fone on the web, I have done that before today but it isn't totally fit for the purpose and unlikely to connect to the telstra country network (where most cross countys go)

As for buying stuff offshore, it is hard enough to get service on locally purchased stuff without loading the dice up on stuff bought overseas. complex electronics can be just a little too difficult when it drops its guts at midnight and the local distibutor (who owes you nothing) and your offshore supplier don't want to know you.

This message has been brought to you by your friendly Electrical, communications and IT Engineer (with over 40 years in the business) and who needs his children to describe the new soft facilities of fones but is extremly skeptical of their recommendations, because these are from one of their friends who is also 14.

    cheers :stirring pot:

  8. 3G frequencies and phone models

Query.............if one purchases an "unlocked" phone from anywhere.......does one just drop your existing sim card into it........and bobs your uncle.

    from Whirlpool.net.au

"Outside of the cities, only Telstra use 3G 850, all other carriers use 3G 900.

So if you want 3G on Telstra outside of the cities where 3G 850 is used, you need the Telstra version. For any other carrier or situation, the standard model should suffice, for example Optus or Vodafone 900 outside of the cities.

2100 is used in the cities by all carriers.

Band I (W-CDMA 2100) Australia (all carriers' metropolitan networks)

Band V (W-CDMA 850) Australia (Telstra NextG Network)

Band VIII (W-CDMA 900) Australia (Optus and Vodafone regional/country 3G networks)

    Note

Telstra have made modifications to the operating system of the Australian model. Menus and tabs have been customised."

  9. Don't complain to us about the lack of alternative service in your area complain to the providers or to the ACCC or to the Minister. It is not a Telstra dastardly trick being pulled but a dastardly trick by to carriers who won't provide you with services. Your Telstra phone works doesn't it? The carriers don't "get" a service, they either they provide one or they don't. Go whinge to Optus just don't whinge to me!!!
