  1. Thinking about this current situation of RAAus handing over our privacy with our consent.

I  am wonder what others are thinking - to me the members are too quiet or have they given up?

The other important issue - I am wondering are all audit results released?

It is an important governance issue that members get a hear about the results of the audits.

Being honest and transparent I think would cover the thoughts.

We have all heard, "All done in secret". Could still be the case.

  3. Hi everyone, my name is Trevor Maskell, located on the Gold Coast. I completed a CPL at age 20, but didn't persue an aviation carrear. Now as a new RAAUS member, l would like to get into flying again and maybe airplane construction.

    Cheers, Trevor

Great to hear you are considering constructing your own aircraft.

You will find this a really rewarding experience as you will be learning about flight and the engineering of such - at the same time.

Go to Oshkosh constructor haven. Pinch some tips and ideas from the Americans, do not have to uses all ideas only take what you feel comfortable with.

What I do say consider Levil for your instruments. (engine monitoring and flight)

Before you start get a grasp of the engineering principals as you will have a truck load of "experts" offering advice. Yes, they are every where, the best question you can ask them, "Lets go and have a look at your plane so I can see how you did that". Hmmmmm gone in the dust.

A very good place to start Bill Whitney has a set of CD's, get the CD's and the notes to go with them, then you will be on the road to happiness. Bill is an engineer who has a passion and an understanding these small aircraft.

  4. As a "contracted service provider" to the Commonwealth, Raaus is quite possibly in breach of the Privacy Act

    The RAAus Privacy Policy say:

5.3.Use and disclosure of personal information

RAAus will only use and/or disclose personal information for the purposes for which it was collected (the primary purpose), unless an individual has consented to another use [APP 6].

There are certain limited circumstances in which RAAus may use or disclose information for a different purpose (a secondary purpose) without consent, such as where the secondary purpose is:

    • directly related to the primary purpose for which the information was collected

    • required or authorised under an Australian law or has been ordered by a court or tribunal

    • necessary to lessen or prevent an immediate and serious threat to the life, safety of air

navigation, health or safety of any individual, or public health or safety

    • to facilitate the investigation of an occurrence involving an RAAus registered aircraft and the death or serious injury of one or more persons

    • a permitted general situation or health situation, as defined by the Privacy Act;

    or

•an enforcement related activity and the use or disclosure of the information is reasonably

    necessary.

If RAAus uses or discloses personal information for a purpose other than what it was originally collected for, RAAus will keep a written notice of that use or disclosure as required by the APPs.

Clearly the "primary Purpose" is the purpose for which it was originally collected and the envisaged "secondary use does not include passing it on to a third party private company without specific consent.

To me there is a clear breach by RAAus of a contract for privacy to the members.

What is going on, is there warrant out to disenfranchise the members?

We as members give RAAus our private information with the undertaking it is not to given to a third party, there is a contracted agreement regarding that information.

  5. Two identical aircraft overhead, one piloted by a CASA approved organisation's pilot (RAAus pilot) who self-declares fitness to fly, and the other has to jump through CASA medical hoops and in reality, also self-declares fitness to fly, or not, regardless of any certificate held, on each and every day they fly. Just like the RAAus pilot does successfully.

AOPA position is the RAAus self-declaring medical status system works, CASA has approved it all, so why are they denying PPL holders of same aircraft up to 600kg? Certainly had all the senators shaking their heads in disbelief. They all seem to be be regular guys, who can clearly smell BS at 60 paces.

RAAus legal advisor fella needs to, oh, I dunno, read the RAAus OPS Manual before his next appearance. My goodness. RAAus aircraft are all simple aircraft with fixed pitch and fixed gear??? What The.

That legal advisor is one of the ones who advised RAAus when moving over to a Ltd. Company. That is all I need to say.

I do wonder why the need for a legal advisor? Were they expecting something more complex and incriminating?

The other point he would not have been free, who paid?

  6. I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments."I don't see RAA (the body) being around in this format over the next say 4 or 5 years. It is badly run, as usual and always has its hand out and dose not deliver.

About time for a new model that is fun and works for its members and holds the line against CASA."

I don't think my meagre pittance is missed, as much as I miss flying.

I'ts awaiting game to see who folds first.

  7. This would be the death of the true AUF as it almost impossible to get training on true ultralights or proper tail wheel craft as it is now in the north hope this is just rumours and not fact !

Doug.. I had a thought, Now would these small flying schools be specialist in teaching the extra endorsements most people are looking for *Tail wheal *Low performance *Amphibians *Low level.. I can not imagine where there will be enough areas in the South East where those skills can be taught because there will be no country about where the practice exercises can be performed.

Take this manoeuvre regarding these small flying schools looks like an attempt to move all operations to the South East where there is the big schools with their mini GA aircraft. To me this a complete disregard for where RAAus has come from.

I do ask, If all goes to the South East and these specialist small schools have been closed.

Who is going to teach these very specialist skills?

  8. Turbo’s Safety Management System is why - every Flying School now has to have one. So whats proposed is a pyramid system where an over arching Flight Training organisation big enough to have the resources to afford the SMS, and Office manager (to keep up with all the BS paperwork and compliance issues) who sees to it that satelite schools preach to the ever increasing standards being imposed by those above. I’ts a system where flying schools do the work for RAA head office. There are changes similar to this going on in the GA training regime as we speak, I know of two who have decided not to continue to operate because of it. We are being screwed in every direction and are expected to like it.

As you say Bill, people will close the schools because of all the paper work.

What needs not to be forgotten if things are made too hard people will give up and go and do other things or never start and go and do other things.

Which ever way you go aviation will be shrinking in Australia and just as Australia needs more pilots for the commercial sector.. Guess what Australia will be getting foreign pilots who have had foreign training not Australian.

There needs to be system which is not as complex and workable or Australia will be out of it.

  9. An instructor has always needed to work under a CFIA senior instructor can work a remote school under a CFI

A CFI can set up a school wherever they like, I guess i don't understand what you are saying Keith.

Ps I am not an instructor.

Some of these little solo schools the instructor is the CFI. Thruster88 you are saying it is OK so am I.

However someone in their wisdom from head office thinks it is a good idea to wind back on these solo schools, that is what I am on about.

  10. lets not prejudge how they are going to screw this up. There is always the opportunity for part time flying instructors, especially those with an existing client base, to join larger schools.

Why has an instructor got to join a larger school?

Why can't he stay where he is? People know the instructor and do not have to travel.

Imagine people coming into Toowoomba from Charleville as Downunder suggests they will give up.

Leave it all alone and promote the small establishments.

  11. There you have answered it, enforcement and control, that is the last thing we need.

Part time instructors -- I think would be more inclined to be up to date as all things flying would not be a chore as these people would read the bulletins more diligently.

  12. F_T...Have a look at Mt.Isa what is there?

Like the pollies taking everything out of the regional and rural areas and plonking it in the GSE.

Like RAAus, to me, looks like things are gravitating to Canberra. Well that is a long way from Weipa.

While we are up there what about Mareeba and Mt. Surprise?

    KP

  13. F_T You have missed a very big point, so hence it is quite obvious you live in the GSE.

What about those small schools like Roma, Longreach even see there is a small school in Cunnamulla. Those organisations service a small clientele and imagine if these people had to travel to the GSE to do their flying. Isn't RAAus for sport and recreation.

These remote schools the instructor is only part time as the instructor has to have another job to survive as instructing/flying is basically a hobby.

  14. Jim McDowall.. Safety is not that hard.. What is "HARD" hard to suffer is the boffins who jumped on the band wagon and made an industry and a career out of "SAFETY" These "Safety Boffins" have got in the ears of the bureaucrats and convinced them that is way to go, the bureaucrats and pollies brought in all this safety legislation. This mob are living on grant money paid for by us tax payers, this crowd are the ones running about telling us what we got to do.

Safety is not an actual being it is a product of.............Culture + System + Procedure = Safety

So when one is teaching, develop these good habits and there is safety without all this hype and noise we have to suffer.

Culture is so important, I see there is more emphasis being put on culture. Culture is the way how we do things planning and looking out for each other.

  15. Keith do you have any evidence for this? It seems highly unlikely that RAAus would seek to reduce the number of flying schools and therefore the number of pilots (customers). If I understand what you are saying then these extraordinary claims need some hard evidence.

I do have concrete evidence.. However the point of this post is to get you all to be awake to this pending plan.

    KP.

  16. One of my worries with the future of RAA and ultralight aviation is the age of current instructors and the lack of new instructors coming through the ranks. If there is a lack of incentive, then the RAA management is not helping.

Downunder there is the problem you have in one.

    ..(NO succession)..

For any organisation to survive there must be a succession plan. The conductors of this plan are the people who are currently at the teaching end of the organisation. These older instructors which are the smaller schools they have evolved from the AUF days this is the talent which is going to be lost.

Just think for a while these people started pre AUF and in this bunch of instructors, they have come from other fields e.g. *Airlines *Ag Pilots *Sea planes just to name some.

Now just think hard ----- where has this new crop has come from, I will not say a thing, you be the judge and be honest with yourself.

For succession to succeed:- *The egos must go *No micro managing let the people who really know what is going on do the work *No managing from head office *No micro managing and being disguised in the mist as "Safety" *Develop a culture not point scoring disguised as "Safety".

Just look at all that, which new instructor would put them selves through all that stress and interrogation, all their enthusiastic incentives will go and never return.

Take a lesson from Cricket Australia. How is that going to be fixed?

  17. Hi Keith - where have you heard this - and are RAA going to fail these flying schools?

That is the quote I received -- apparently it is costing too much to do an audit on these small schools. So close them is the go.

Crowd the South East Corner is the way to go, I will not elaborate on that point but read your own interpretations into that one.

I hear and see reported Australia will need a big number of pilot to service the aviation industry, so wouldn't it be better to encourage all these small schools to increase their number of students. What better place to start is the quiet country areas just to get the feel of the aircraft or worry about what else is in the air as well

I do like that old Kevin Wilson telephone song, "You here to help not to make it hard" or terms to that effect.

    KP

  18. I hear there is an attempt to close the small flying schools. The regional and rural areas cop it again.

If it is not a government then it is a sporting body.

To me this an attempt to move everything into close quarters for the South Eastern corner of Australia. Makes life easier for the Lobster and Latte' set.

    "Decentralise", is the go.
