  1. AAAwwwww Jeez....... aint that the truth.... ;) Ben
  2. FANBLOODYTASTIC! Now I can get more stick time - without annoying anyone else... All we have to do is fix the weather so its "soloable".... Ben
  3. Lets not lose sight of the fact that local & state government often uses the hiring of consultants to establish a master plan as a means of 1) dealying any existing project indefinitely and 2) ensuring the consultants recommendations match those of the original council intention. Sorry this sounds cynical, but after working for 25 years in the news gathering business, I have seen this happen all too often. Also, the formal rebuttal letter is used as part of the spin doctoring to reduce the credibility of the media organisation when said media outlet has uncovered the truth. Ben
  4. Er... depends... on.. the.. emergency, dareI say? Ben
  5. Aaaaand it gets the added letter K, when the ratio is 99% air, I guess... Ben
  6. Kind of what I was thinking..... Ben
  7. Well - BILS (bloke in the left seat) is a more accurate description... Ben
  8. I call it the Air to fuel Ratio Management Policy... When the quantity of air in the tanks is greater than the supply of fuel, its time to seriously considerfilling up... Ben
  9. It was! The "convective turbulence" on short finals was cool.... ended up floating for 300m with power at idle, trying to land... Ben
  10. Geez! One very cool pilot under a hell of a situation. So, anyone know what happened in the moments before the collision? ben
  11. One way to spend the day..... Ben
  12. Totally agree with you there.... Its little things they need to worry about, like someone asking to learn to fly.."straight and level, but dont worry about landing.." Ben
  13. Just imagine some ASIC nazi asking to see his ID.... Ben
  14. As a kid, I used to work as a flagman for a crop spray company during the holidays. We would start at 7pm and go till 7am, with a break around three. With the daytime temp in the low 40s, the reason given was the spray would rise and not settle on the plants, whereas at night in the "cool" of 32 degrees it would swirl around the plant and stay there before evaporating and rising with the thermals. At night the sight was awsome.. no wonder there were so many UFO reports made! The pilot would use the main landing light for the spray pass, then on the turns, he would use two lights on the wingtip, to light the ground. Ben
  15. Funny thing... my instructor is hammering into me the fact that P Charts WILL be used almost every time you fly. Runway length available, versus required.. temp, slope, weight, balance, crosswind, trees at the end of the runway... a zillion thingsall variable.... Geez no wonder I lose sleep after a dose of P Chart theory! Ben
  16. Sorry.. Cant see the pic.. Internut Explorer blocked the link... something about security certificate errors... a bit approriate, really... Ben
  17. What... the snake eating scene was a hoax as well? Joke Joyce.. I knew a lot of the techies at the CSIRO Radiotelescope (AKA The Dish) who can attest it was no hoax.. the Apollo 11 one, not Capricorn 1... Ben

  20. While I would be tempted to build one.. It HAS to be a factory job for mine... Sorry, I have this thing about double and triple checking things... Im so bad, Iwater testthe tanks twice... By the way, Is Mike bringing a 300 to the Aviation Unlimited at Shepp in March.. cos if he is, I would love a test drive. Ben Ben Longden
  21. I couldnt go for a fly yesterday as the smoke haze was too thick - about 900m vis. At Shepp, the flightline was packed with helicopter water bombers and spotters - including a Sikorsky S64 Skycrane, named Malcolm. These guys spent half the day on the ground as the smoke was unsafe to fly through. After lunch half the fleet moved to Wangaratta awaiting deployment, but the skycrane stayed. Ben
  22. Ahhhhhh but here in Australia we use a light short acting sedation... so you actually snore all the way through the procedure. By the way, anyone with a change in bowel habits, or a family history of cancer, or a bleed from the bum needs to go and see their doc. If s/he suggests a scope - dont worry, this is the best way to do the check. Painless, no discomfort. The only downside is the prep.. and having to stay near a dunny. Anyone see 60 minutes a couple of weeks ago? Ben
  23. Strange but true... At Echuca, the ambos were refused access to a key to get airside by the local council.. which meant a bit of an issue when they needed to load a critical care patient into the waiting King Air. So, the bloke in charge of the ambo station got the OK from his boss to purchase a set of bolt cutters for each ambo truck in the fleet. When they needed to gain access to the airstrip to load a paitient into the king air - now, remember this needs to be done preferably with the ambulance, a big GM next to the aircraft, so the patient movement is minimised. You guessed it, each time the Air Ambulance arrived, out came the bolt cutters.. And then a radio call to the Ambo dispatcher to notify the police wot they just did. It took about a year before the council got its act together... and Echuca is NOT a secure airport.. well in terms of needing ASICs anyway. Ben
  24. I would go for the kit.. and my advice is to study as if you were doing PPL. At Shepparton, many go on from RAA and get their PPL which is why they teach to the PPL standard. Not only does it give a greater understanding of practice, theory and air law, but it makes for a better pilot. The other book I would head for is the one on Navigation. This is a really valuable book (RAA and GA) in teaching the essentials and advanced methods of navigating and flight planning. Just remember the standard RAF equipment is a map, compass, protractor, pencil, clipboard and a stopwatch. Ben *Passed the BAK!!*
  25. Just an add-on to my previous thought. While going through CASA's nine page application form for the card, I found this on P8. So, you can wear it without a lanyard... just so long as its visible. Ben
