  1. Wife and i have flown all over that area, several times. Absolutely love the straits. There is must doos , permissions from each island ( nearly all have good strips ) some have accomodations, all must be pre booked. Drop me a PM, i‘ll give you contact names/phs, etc. Best fuel point is Horn island as your base, they’re strict on HI viz on the ground. Excellent accom at horn and TI.

  2. needed to carry every damn thing on 1 trip, max fuel the lot ( J160 ).....weighed the ol girl, 612kg, yikes, rang “someone” that knew its limits, was told if it gets off the ground...and it will, it will fly perfectly......took an extra 100m on the grass, but lift off good as. Have now multiple times packed her to the roof, careful with COG limits tho.

  3. Up until a certain yr ( cant recall that yr ) all jab tanks were sealed with a coating that was not suited for 95..98 mogas. The header tank in particular would leech strong fuel odours..95...98. Resealing them with the later product was the only fix, or just use avgas.

  4. Agreed, Planey. Just trimming it back a smidgeon, within tolerance.

Yesterday arvo I poked my inspection camera down the plug holes. Wish I hadn't; up close, the encrustations on top of the piston look like massive geological structures.

I've been religiously using AvGas for a decade, mostly for it's known quality, but would love to get away from lead. Is there any additive I can use to clear those internal deposits?

Used Moreys upper cyl lube for yrs, internals clean as.....( avgas used )

  5. Hi Russ, any chance you can get me some contact details for the "Gyro folks" using this system. Sports ear clinic not coming up on a Google search, presumably any hearing clinic should be able to assist...maybe.

    Motorbike writer.com (ear moulds)

a lot of muster guys fly all day using moulds..

  6. Have trialled ear moulds, made from silicon with tiny speakers moulded within, bloody brilliant. Gyro folks put me onto them. They were wired to comms usual way, did hear now possible to wifi/Bluetooth them. Cost around $200. You need to get “sports ear” clinic to form your mould, they are custom made.

  7. I fail to understand why simple causes are again behind another major aviation crash. Why would you keep attempting to land after seeing such a deterioration in weather conditions, and after two previously failed attempts at landing?

What was so crucial to landing that it couldn't have been aborted, and the entire trip declared a mission write-off, and simply return to their departure point?

There's very little that cannot be re-arranged to another day. The only exception would be a landing on a solitary island in the middle of a large ocean.

spot on....weipa due west 100miles, cooktown due south 100miles. A totally, totally avoidable tragic accident. ( 2 aborted attempts, 3rd the end )..crazy

  8. it is "as simple as that"....RAA pilots openly whinge having to pay a fee, all other users know RAA generally get away with non payments. The bulk of GA pay, and yes "some" evade. Councils will seek a better way to get users paying, cameras being one. When........RAA are told to rack off, with appropriate legislations by councils, then RAA pilots will say WTF, we just stuffed ourselves. Most councils are strapped for funds, most see airstrips as a burden to them, can see councils simply closing strips, or banning non VH aircraft totally as some are now doing. RAA pilots should be encouraging councils to embrace RAA pilots, not p!ssing councils off. Continue the line of " we won't pay fees".....then your days are numbered.

  9. yawn.......only a matter of time with all the moaning about landing fees and RAA aircraft reluctant to pay, that councils and the like will simply deny access to all RAA unless they ( RAA pilots ), conform to the requirement. When that happens, and it will, then you'll have something to really bitch about. Personally if i'm asked to pay a fee, i'm only too happy to, for the "priviledge" of using someones elses property ( council ) RAA pilots want to be real carefull they don't end up shooting themselves in the foot re this matter. Just last yr we needed to refuel enroute, ersa said non VH registered were denied use, after protracted tooing and fro, i managed to get ongoing use as required. ( they were ANTI   RAA ) i now treat that permission with great care. The GA pilots know RAA evade these fees, and it rightfully erks them, my guess they feedback to local councils etc re this matter.

  10. always...always ring ahead and get "first hand updates" etc. Especially out of the way places. Trust ERSA at your peril, and i know. ( victim ) While i'm on it, carry a cheque book, if bowser swipe is down, refuellers usually will come at no expense and bypass system to fuel you, you pay cheque.

  11. Just in the planning stage for a flying trip in September, lots of conflicting information about the availablity of avgas at Goondiwindi, can anyone confirm if the bowser accepts credit card, thanks.

    maaate........ring them, not hard

  12. I wonder why Russ got a warning shot across his bows for his post but Nong didn't?

Gandy, Gandy.......my post was "disrespectful, lacked common decency"

However, I'm chuffed the " no votes" got thumped by the " yes vote" , I believe 80% better. Now.....let's move forward.
