    Hi Jason

yeah, I know a couple of the 914 conversions, that's a super option but lots of money. They're all experimental cat.

The 912ULS into a J230 all fits and the weight is in the right place, the prop is in the right place (no cowling change ! )  and the mount is only a 2D drawing hole adaptor plate.

So the CG etc , the thrust location etc is all unchanged so the stall, spin recovery will be essentially unchanged. That's the  non negotiable. I   am not sure if the presence of a CS prop would change the spin recovery character significantly.

With a CS prop, it would meet the book TO roll , and might do a bit better on landing roll.

Jabiru could sell 3x the airframes if they went along with it (they dont wish to be involved so I am  not seeking their blessing) .

J230  is a super airframe . Fast, strong, roomy, quiet, safe.

Again, it should be pointed out, that a 80HP engine  in the J170D with the identical wing and MTOW  passes muster for most applications. Of course the J230 performance is a sports car compared to a J170, and also J230s are "more often fully loaded".  A user with a 912ULS, would have to accept lower cruise airspeeds during high DA conditions.

Sure the big bore kits fix that (114HP)  without a CS prop, but that's one further step away from a plug-in which I seek to meet.  If it can be a simple bolt on, then we have a goer. Once an additional step is in there, the taste for the change to be applied en masse is reduced  and the path to approval is more difficult

The Jab in the link is a 912 conversion. 😊

  2. Hi All, does anyone know where I can get new tyres/tubes for my Xair locally? I have checked the web and it seems most of sites are online tyre suppliers getting their stock out of the USA. The original tyres are 4.80 / 4.00-8 (4 ply) D602 Barrow Deestones. Would prefer to get a slightly wider/aggressive tread than the stock Xair tyres to make them more effective in softer coditions. Any hel appreciated.

    Bill

Bill, when I had my Xair I got my tyres from here Trailer Parts | Garbutt | NQ Wheels & Castor Supplies

I tended to pick up a few goat heads so got the heavier tread. They worked very well.

  3. Well today marks 5 years since some of us lost a great friend.

Ross Millard (Maj) left us on this day in an unfortunate aviation accident helping out a friend.

I miss him terribly even though I only met him once in person in his home town of Townsville.

Many times over the phone we spoke forming a friendship before he left us.

Wherever you are Maj, smooth skies and tailwinds buddy.

4 years, Alf. Not a day I’ll forget in a hurry.

  4. G’day Brett,

I’ll lay money on your problem being your ducting to your radiator not allowing enough airflow.

i’ve recently had to mount my radiator vertically on the engine mount near the Firewall on my 601 HDS and had the same problem. I originally had a Plenum over the radiator fed  by various inlets but eventually  had to make a NACA duct feeding directly to the face of the radiator to allow effective ground cooling.

It now runs waaay to cool but that’s a simple fix with some Aluminium tape.

  5. Skippy, have you got a close up photo of the Staining ?

If the Chemicals you have tried have had little effect, I would start doing test spots starting with a light Polish/Pad Combo gradually moving up to a heavy Compound and even Wet Sanding if required. Sometimes there just isn’t enough Paint to remove the defects and repainting is the only option.

It would probably be easier and cheaper for you to get a GOOD local Detailer to have a look at it for you ( I may know someone in your area )

For protection you can’t go past a good quality Professionally applied Ceramic Coating although there are consumer grade coatings available prep is key to a good result.

  6. I am completely against what RAAus have done in registering a trademark of words that have clearly been in use by another organisation, apparently for nearly eighty years.I think it's along the same lines as the underhanded yanks who effectively stole the Ugg brand by registering their trademark both here and in the USA - and the ensuing battle that reigned when the rightful owners tried to have the registration cancelled just shows that prior use doesn't guarantee anything at all. It's also similar to the greedy low-lifes who tried to register the Smiley symbol, Aussie, Aussie, Aussie and similar icons.

However - I must have completely missed something here because I haven't seen where RAAus have asked that AOPA or any other bodies/entities should have to pay for the use of this trademark. Can someone point me to a reference please, because if they have done so it puts a completely different and much worse light on an already very messy situation.

  8. I fly a 601 HDS with a tinted canopy and the Vans RV NACA ducts to eyeball vents for cockpit airflow up here in North Queensland.

On the ground it can get pretty tropical but in the air we’ve had absolutely no problem.

You can also buy retractable shade screens such as the Home which I’ve been meaning to get....more for shade while we’re parked at other airstrips.
