http://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/one-fatality-at-lethbridge.136500/Are you sure that is the same one Dazza? The other thread is about a Pitts, Kaz's one shows a 19 rego'd Sonex?- 1

Sad news out of the states today with the Sonex factory demonstrator crashing with 2 on board ....I believe this aircraft had the new Aerovee turbo installed.
There doesn't appear to be to much damage to the prop...maybe an forced landing without power ?

Check this video out OME I watch it often and it reinforces the need to keep coordinated and watch your angle of attackI've been pondering this opinion all day. I can't argue whether the statistics show if it is right or wrong, but I'm truly baffled as to how an airplane on a descending flight path and turning into wind can stall. (I'm assuming here that the turn is relatively gentle - not a pirouette around a wingtip.) What better situation is there - low AoA; fairly constant airflow. The only reason I can see for a stall in this phase of the flight is the pilot trying to correct an undershoot with the elevator [ raising the nose and increasing AoA] and not the throttle [halting the rate of descent with Power until the airplane intersects the correct descent path].Old Man Emuhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwrfEsCiltc

Just to be clear I'm not saying you can't set your MTOW higher for your self built aircraft what I am saying is if you choose to fly grossly over your particular aircraft designers MTOW limit make sure you fully understand the potential ramifications because an RAA paperwork shuffle doesn't automatically make an airframe stronger

The RAA MTOW is now 600kg and theoretically you could set your MTOW at that BUT the aircrafts designed structural weight is 490 kg so IMO the question should be how comfortable are you in becoming a test pilot :)Well I guess the 490 vs 544 weight begs the question. What are the different stall speeds?I was looking at a kit years ago but could never decide on an engine.......- 1
-
Mine is registered at 490kg as per the maximum design weight submitted to RAA by the manufacturer in the operating manual https://www.raa.asn.au/safety/airworthiness/
(Scroll down) as opposed to the RAA MTOW at the time.I had no choice in the matter.
I would give the tech manager a call to be certain

As Robinsm said you will get 50kts easy. That empty weight sounds right but MTOW is 490kg still good compared to most ultralights :)

I don't believe the 618 powered Xair has a significantly higher cruise speed than the 582 because of the draggy airframe but you will see an increase in climb performance,on that note my 500fpm is with me at 105kg and full tanks of 88 ltrs (standard tanks are 50ltrs)
Xair Ireland did a lot of testing and found the hot ticket to the best Xair performance was a 582 with a 3:1 c box and a 2 blade Duc windspoon prop and apparently you can expect a solid TAS of 55+ kts @5300rpm and around 15ltrs ph (these figures have been confirmed in the field)
I regularly fly with a T500 thruster and a 582 drifter and we all have similar performance except climb but I'm usually much heavier too

I plan 50kts @ 5500rpm and get 17lph and rate of climb of 500fpm solo and 3-400fpm at MTOW with a grey top 582 but I don't have doors on mine which I am lead to believe are good for 5kts.
They're a great machine and can carry 2POB and camping gear no problem.
You missed a bargain up here last week a tidy one was listed on EBay with a 618 with TT 280hrs $7000

Datsun, what is the EGT gauge indicating ? And what do your plugs look like ?

Mate i'd just ignore what was in your old carbs and just go by the book.I will plug in the carb balancer for pneumatic balancing AFTER run in . The mechanical balance is done . I'm hoping 1 carbie in the old eng was just set wrong .I went through the 582 in my Xair when i bought it and there were two different main jets and the clip positions weren't the same,i think people start chasing their EGT gauges in 2 strokes when they should be reading their plugs ...... that's how stories about burning holes in pistons start:smile:

Tim, all the info you need to set your engine up by the book is in that link ie clip position is the 3rd one from the top and airscrew is is wound out one turn , then set your prop pitch to load your engine to 6300rpm static (max torque ) and it should be sweet .Will confirm with wal at bert flood tomorrow before break- in takes place. My problem is not the jets! There fine and match my old 582 . Problem is for my light wing I would like to have the idle mixture set the same as it was as the old eng ran 517 hr no probs. but as mentioned they are set different on old carbies ? It would be nice to have it set up the same as I know egt temps were good.Jason

Slip down to your local auto parts store and grab yourself a "clay bar" use plenty of lube , a strong mix of a good quality car wash will suffice .
That's the least aggressive approach and should sort it out.
