  1. That jab modified might do the job but it's starting to look like a Plumber's nightmare. Nev

The plumbers nightmare (my nightmare by the way ) is being redesigned as we speak ,

T he Crome Molly mount will go all the way down to the roof ,and the turret cowls will screw off , making better access . another big mod !!

you know , rod stiff told me , it never ends. !!!

  2. Looks great, very inspiring, I might start with the SDS injection and go from there:chuffed:

if you add the LCH to the SDS the extra current load with the water pump ect , ,7ampdraw, required a 30amp alt (on vac pump drive) .weight starts to creep up .

    cheers mike

Hi there Avocet, I'm keen to hear how the injected, liquid cooled head jab 3300 is performing. I think you could be on a winner there. What sort of prop and pitch etc?

the LCH& the multipoint work exceptionally good combined

    with 62"x54" pitch prop.

it's a much smoother running & idl.,a good temp. spread and a oil temp thermostat keeps the oil at 80 deg

heads /water temp 95/100deg. works we'll on the pusher set up .

    cheers mike

the day before I was off to austfly

I got the dreaded flu that lasted for 6 weeks and then at Xmas igot another does , on top of a long hot summer in the flinders, and then I decided to make another v/stab , and now I'm ready again to hit the sky's ,

we are building an office in the hanger to house our new 3d printer , (15cubic ins.)we'll be able to make moulds and plastic parts for the avocet

I need to go and do some flying with an instructor , not quite current .

any way, I've been following the forum , some informative stuff .

    cheers Mike Sharples

  6. While I have been a pilot for many years I have also been in the IT industry almost as long. The idea of being able to see and track other aeroplanes (and cars, boats) is really easy to fulfil provided only that each aeroplane to be tracked has the same software on board and computer switched on. As it happens I am currently developing such an application now although it will not be seen in public until Windows 8 is released later this year. The application is intended to run on a Windows tablet computer but will also run on both netbooks and laptops. It will also run on desktop PCs so that family will be able to track flights. I should point out that the operator/pilot will always have the choice of being able to be followed and who can follow her/him. All software required to us this application will be free of charge.A few other features may be built into the application - internet access via the mobile phone system and WiFi, VoIP telephone calls.

The most difficult part of this system is obtaining LED or LCD screens that can be seen in direct sunlight, however I have found a source for these screens in a number of standard sizes.

Should anyone be interested in this kind of application I would be very interested to hear from you regarding features you would like to see included.

How's the project going Evan ?

    Is this thing spider tracks?

    Cheers mike .

  7. How is fuel related problems related in any form to the make of the engine ?

I'd like to see an investigation into fuel quality and variation (Mogas) .a lot of people are using it blindly , me included , up until now ,those little filters are easily clogged

I pulled one out of a jab that ran only on avgas but only did about 15/20 hours per year and it was very hard to blow though !

I expect it would have caused an engine failure in the very near future .

I would highly suggest every one check their fuel filters on a frequent basis ,especially if they have been using Mogas .

Seems to me we can argue and defend , dispute , different makes of engine but maybe overlook the most ( statistically ) reason that engines fail and flight is prematurely cut short .

    Cheers mike

  8. Doing a leak down and introducing 80psi into a jab cyl , can cause an uncontrolled prop spin in any direction and can inflict enough peripheral impact force to the head to kill , or seriously injure !!

It's definatly a two person job , with both knowing what their doing ,and strict safety protocol and communication .

It's as dangerous as handling a loaded gun

  9. Sounds like ELT's. ASIC. cards , paper maps (air services ) are being relegated to the obsolete as new technology comes up with far more reliable ,safer ,and far cheeper options,

I'm starting to feel a bit ripped off financially and taken for a ride with people (casa)

Telling me what indeed to be safe .

In my prang , 2years ago last week ,the ELT' was found 2 weeks later underneath the wreck , along with my wallet ,

The iPhone had a smashed screen , but still worked for about 4 hours , it was used at Willcainia hospital to take a photo of my injured arm

    Warning !!! Graphic injury photo.

    Cheers Mike

  10. It's 18 months now ( Feb 2012) since I first tried the LiFePO4 battery from Hobbyking and it's time for an update. Here's the story:After finding out that one of the 8400mah packs had ample cranking power, I went back to the Odyssey until I got a "Protection Circuit Module for 4 cells LiFePO4 pack" from All-Battery.com. You can Google this up.

This was a bit of a disappointment when I got it because the by-pass current is only listed at 60ma, when I would have preferred a lot higher, say 200ma.

Anyway, I hard-wired this in and operated with this setup for over a year with no problems. This is with the ordinary Jabiru regulator which apparently is a tractor spare part.

It cranked over really well every time. The battery didn't explode or catch fire , but I have seen a story that an airliner had a fire and heard a rumor that a Colyaer may have had a fire.

Then one day after about 15 months, I left the master on and when I came back next week the battery was dead and couldn't be revived. Since I bought 2 of these batteries, the second one is now in the plane.

I'm planning to install a buzzer to help me avoid leaving the master on. To implement this I reckon I need to replace one of the mag switches from the existing 2 pole single throw to a 3 pole single-throw. The idea is for the buzzer to sound when the master is ON and that mag OFF.

Yes I know it shouldn't be necessary and I know that a strobe which is always on when the master is on would work too. I don't want the weight of the strobe and I don't think they are effective in broad daylight.

Maybe I'm the only person who leaves the master on once every 5 years or so.

    regards, Bruce

Yea Bruce , your the only one that leaves your master switch on ,!?

  11. There's a big difference in operating a jabiru type aircraft at 600 kg and 700kg especially on the base leg to final approach ,

Try landing a j200 at max gross at 60 /65 kts and you'll give yourself a bit more than a surprise tuning base if your in a bit of a skid , they become quite doey and ineffective on the aileron , also sink rate ,

I'm just saying , if you've only ever flown a jabiru at say 544kg and then as the rules have changed to 600kg be tempted to load them to max 700kg or more , they in fact become a different beast , with some care and understanding ,( and I don't mean flowers and a table for two ) !

    Cheers Mike

Ps . This wont be the case for experianced pilots , having flown various types ,

  12. I know! I know! I`m going to offend someone and probably cop S@&t, but man! I`m sick of seeing guys going down into terain Of course I`m glad the guy is OK but it doesn`t change my point of view.

    Frank.

In my case , it was the only tree around

Believe it or not there is an airstrip 100 mts behind the reck , when you loose control 30 ft agl and are banking to the left you don't get any choice ! Just like an engine failure.

Any they say any landing you walk away from !!!! I wouldn't say these were good ones

    Mike .

I to am glad he walked away , and yes I to am sick of seeing these to , especially when they happen to you

  13. Avocet....me being pedantic again.....ELT's don't have to have GPS fitted to be "suitable".....That said....given the choice and a few more ready $ to throw at the problem I'd have one with GPS every time......406mhz allows a smaller area to be searched than 121.5mhz....but even though its smaller its still bloody huge when compared to an exact GPS fix...... means that the dornier doesn't have to burn figure 8's overhead trying to find you in the "general area" something that if I was in serious pain or slowly bleeding out I'd be keen to bypass if at all possible...

Surprised that portables need to be TSO'd.....the amount of a particular portable that end up in an aeroplane as opposed to any other dangerous leisure time activity would be small.....but not a bad thing...in fact a good thing to be sure of a repeatable quality std.

    Andy

Yea , that was a pretty pathetic post ,

Ill do some research next time!

    Cheers
