  1. The compression check on the 912 is virtually useless even though it is suggested as part of a normal 100 hrly by the manufacturer. You will always get good readings on a 912 until they get around the 2000 hr mark, and only then they may drop a little because a carbon buildup can be expected under the exhaust valve seats. The rings (square cut just like a VW) pistons ( forged alum Cima Mahle Porsche quality) and bore, ( all alloy - nikisil ) pretty much guarantee no loss of compression until very high times are reached.Even then simply removing the heads ( no gaskets) for a standard valve grind will always restore compressions to standard value.

My 912 ULS has 900+ hours now and has never had a compression test done on it , nor do I intend to even think about doing one until it reaches TBO of 1500 hours. I'll bet you even then it'll still be ok, and well within range. Like any engine the best medicine is to use them often and don't baby them. I change my oil every 50 hrs ( Valvolene Durablend 15w50) and my oil filter every second oil change at every 100 hourly. I always do a filter cut and only use Rotax oil filters. The engine was run on Castrol GPS for its first 400 hrs until Rotax no longer recommended its use.

Therefore u are not maintaning it in acodance with the maintenance manual

  2. Gary have you had a look @ the CX5 that Dave Thatcher designed? They have built a good community out of the idea of a cheap planehttp://www.cx4community.com/

If I was in the market for a homebuilt I definitely look at something like this over a fragile tube and fabric design. It might be double the cost but it would be a lot more usable than something that will struggle in windy days.

One other thing you need to consider with homebuilts is that its a huge task and without support from the manufacturer or designer its beyond 99% of the population.

Having built a Thatcher CX4 and spent time with Dave Thatcher in his workshop during the Thatcher Flyin in Pensacola i can assure people that no sophisticated equipment is required to build these brilliant aircraft . The CX5 according to the supplied materials list costs approx US$ 23,000, my CX4 in Australia complete less engine let me buy a beer short of A$10,00

  3. Having the usual starting troubles with my Jab. Purchased an ave battery for it and it is clear it is not good enough. I have been looking at these lipo style bats that can be charged using the existing charge system. Can even be used in cars. http://www.superstart.com.au/tabid/108/bid/15/Products/SSBPowerSportLithium.aspxThese batts seem to be more stable than normal lipo's... I am guessing they are along the lines of LiFe which I have used in other applications with great results and high AMPS .

Not sure if others have tried these or what others have used to get better starting results in their Jabs. My current batt is an AusLec... And I find if the aircraft does not start in the first few cranks I will need to jump start it. Once it has been started it fine. Guess not much more could be expected from a low price batt.

Looking for information from those with knowledge in this area rather than opinions. I do understand about Lipo's, but not seen them used in this application.

DO NOT use lipo with the jabiru charging system call in and see me at gawler and i will explain

  4. Mate thank you very much for the extra insight... that definitely helps.. i might just need to go with a different outfit. I'll call CASA in the morning and triple-check (again) whta their requirements are, then may just need to find a different place so I can start over on the front foot...

\casa did not require me to have any special tests only a report from my specalists who reads a 6 month period of downloads from my machine checkwith casa this download may be what casa call a home test

  5. Getting a 4 in one guage that fits my existing hole, is proving a problem........ 2 in one, easy,( Rotax 4 banger )

So 2 censors is better than just the one I spose , perhaps I site one on the LHR cyl, other RHF cyl. .??

Getting back to my current position, installing that "lip" has noticeably dropped the temp on my LHR cyl, surely then, one could assume that this has also had a positive effect on the other 3 cyls......surely.

Any.........drop in the engine bay must be benificial overall.

Keep single gauge fit 4position rotary switch to select all sensors indavidually

  6. Went and did my class 2 medical today, as I am considering transferring to PPL so that i can have the option of aircraft/airfield as appropriate. Also - my school in Bankstown finally got a waiver from CASA so RAA pilots can fly out of Bankstown (solo only) for the purpose of "continued training" - but it also requires a class 2.

Well... early days yet... hopefully they will just have me sign something saying I'll continue to use my CPAP machine or similar, perhaps get a sleep study every x years. If its not meant to be, well I have RAAus :) Just would like the choice, is all. Plus a transferrable licence if i should find myself back in the US.

u need a sleep report mine is every twelve months

  7. How do you know it was fuel. I read three articles on this. All said it was an engine failure, none mentioned fuel. In fairness to jab though it was likely a user caused problem given it just had an engine change, and they got it running again. But its still possibly jab engine failure. So lets call it number 2 still unless we find out otherwise

"After some running repairs on a blocked fuel valve the plane burst back into life and the makeshift runway was cleared in time to beat the incoming tide".
