I agree 100% with you Gareth, I would love to see an online hardware and parts supply shop for Australia, something similar to spruce. Would even settle for a company that put out a readily available catalog who you could easily order through!

 

There is a pilot shop some where in Forrest Hill in VIC, they do a great job with prices and stock all sorts of hardware.

 

Otherwise your best is going to be in Archerfield as I think thats your closest. You would be looking at these two as the main suppliers

Keep in mind though Gareth that all suppliers are going to simply get their products from O/S then hand them over to you! Also both Aviall and Superior can be a little more difficult than spruce is when it comes to ordering!

Louis we had the wings stored in the back family room, Bits & pieces hanging off clothes line (both outside one & John has added 3 lines for the winter on the patio) , plus we had put up a tempory tent behind the gates in the driveway & had bits hanging in there also. As I said it was a great experience for us both.

2I have spent the night scouring the net for info and there is not much out there on it. Maj I doubt YTEA is on the same land as it is about 40nm south west of Dingo, how far out was the strip you were talking about?

 

Best I can make out is it's the old strip for the Laleham underground coal mine as the strip is just abeam that facility. Looks like the mine was shut down in 2001 after a merger and they switched to purely open cut coal mining. Maybe the strip has been left to the elements since then? Any one know anything about the Laleham coal mine south of black water?????

 

 

I agree with what has been said above. Aircraft Spruce & Sportys are about the best options. I am currently searching fro some where to get some dangerous goods sent to me, from the USA it is about $500 postage just for dangerous goods. I know aviall will sell direct to the public if you're at there office, other wise it seems hard to set up an account with them!

 

 

Have Tomo here and we are discussing good strips/places to go out for a camping trip. Tomo was talking about a small, crossed out yet fairly good condition strip about 20nm south south west of Blackwater that is marked on the WAC as Terang (Where was Tomo on my camping thread with this info!!!! ). For google earth users the LAT/LONG is 23°57'39.61"S 148°46'40.89"E.

 

Does any one have any info on this strip, looks like an old mining strip so does any one know if the mine is still active, is the airstrip privately owned etc...????? Any info would be appreciated

Alan, have to admit I am speechless, not sure how to respond to that, so I will let this little man do it for me -

 

 

 

Problem with an air mattress is that it can get quite deflating when you hit a sharp spot on the ground... particularly in the middle of the night! I have this self inflating roll out mattress, pretty tiny, and nothing elegant, but it only weighs 800grams! I have considered this a lot Tomo and I agree the easy solution is the self inflaters, but I am not one who often opts for the easy solution when there is an over complicated, stress increasing and totally rediculaious manner in which to achieve the same outcome (Hey I should work for CASA!) . I know how frustrating it can be to have a mattress make the horrible PHHHHSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTT sound in the middle of the night . But simple fact is I find air mattress take up a lot less space when deflated than two of the self inflating foam type, are more comfortable to sleep on and infinitely better for a couple as you avoid that horrible split in the middle that grows ever wider over the course of the night until your sleeping on the hard ground!

 

Camping as a couple is where most of my issues stem from, makes sleeping bags harder, mattress harder, tents harder etc.... but leaving the wife behind and going on my on is not really an option I want to use. So working out the couple equipment it has to be!

 

I'll get the legit interior dimensions of my 'Backpacker' if you want - it comfortable sleeps 2 x 6ft+ guys and I reckon would take a double matress easy.Cheers - boingk

That would actually be fantastic Boingk, it is nhy impossible to find actual inside Dia. of set ups tents so I would really appreciate the info.

I need a two man tent that will fit an air mattress in it. Working on what exactly is going to be the best combination, looks at this stage like a 3 man tent and a standard double air mattress is going to work well though.

 

 

Look what came in the mail today! My Smiths Mk20A original RAAF altimeter to help with the originalizing of the Auster panel! It's almost a shame to pull it out of the nice box someone has built for it.

 

Is reading 2000ft under at the moment, so am about to calibrate it before setting it into the dash. What fun!

 

 

 

 

Now I have the stove think I will need to buy one of these for my morning coffee fix while sitting under the Auster wing!!!

Boingk: Hope your right as I just bought a 27-5 (bought a kettle separate) as my first accessorie for camping in the Auster.

 

 

I am lucky enough to have a genny hooked up to the O-235. Although if I could get my hands on a wind generator would probably fit it just for nostalgia!

If it is fitted with an A65 it might also be worth noting there might not be a charging system installed. So something that uses very little electrical juice will be important

I do not really see the point of having a GA RPL in the first place. It sounds like you have to jump through nearly all the same hoops as a PPL except maybe CTA. Silly thing is you can actually get a PPL with an exclusion of CTA if you to scared to tackle it in your flying training. The only benefit really seems to be the medical issue of only having to hold a drivers license. Which is great for all those who have medical issues but for those guys complaining about the cost!!!! It is more to join and register an aircraft with RAA per year than it is to get a CASA medical!

 

Also I have to say I am not a fan of these seating restrictions in smaller GA aircraft. I feel there just asking for people to brake the laws set onto them. Were saying, here you go take your RPL and fly your nice 172 in the isolated area and we will take your good will as to the fact you will never put people in those rear seats, SURE!!! Also I can not figure out how we as people can decided upon a level of training or education that makes it okay to kill only one person as opposed to three. Surely were training every pilot to a level that should mean it really does not matter how many bums in the aircraft??

 

The whole reason we went from having an RPL to a GFPT was because pilots stopped getting the required training to go to a full PPL but flew as if they had anyway!

 

I honestly fail to see how the RPL is going to be of a huge benefit to pilots out there, why not just drop the medical requirements for PPL, the is basically all the RPL is doing.

No I'm not, but hey it's an old gauge so I would say it has been opened plenty of times before! (And only one time prior to this overhaul by me )

 

 

I was thinking of going flying, though not really sure if that will work, I probably should work on my house so I can get some renters in it to start paying the bills! But I'm easy... Next weekend I'll probably be picking (I drive for my uncle during cotton harvest season) but don't work Sundays so I could nearly even drop over to Pittsworth after church on Sunday. I hear cotton picking is a long days work! You can keep that job to yourself!!! Sounds like you keep yourself busy, with being a diesel fitter and helping on the farm as well, how do you manage to fit in more flying than the rest of us do!!!! Well here is my Auster work for the day, might not look like much but I tell you who ever decided to paint the rudder in checks is being cursed by me at the moment. It took HOURS to mask them out!!!! Still the finish results where worth it and should spruce the old girl up nicely

 

 

 

 

Don't do anything silly you young fella's. Plenty of times I was "pressured" to do dramatic departures from airports when I owned the Citabria. I resisted all requests and no doubt disappointed a few who would like to see something exciting. I know of about 4 pilots who have died, or been badly injured from doing spectacular departures in the last 8 years, and plenty more going back further..
