Hi Dave, Welcome, nothing like using the same dodgy avatars is there mate ... LOL
-
I reckon you got the best model there David, well done.Mine is an original XP503 Maxair, imported in kit from USA and assembled by austflight, refurbished 2006. Has original bucket seats flies like a bird. Yes very light, could use a backyard as a runway. -
It is certainly more efficient, but there is always a weight penalty with water cooling.Water cooling is 10x more efficient than air cooling.
Because they were not designed for constant WOT applications which reduces the engine life. I am curious as to the real TBO of the ali Chev motor.I can't understand why CASA is so against auto engines. -
Dazz, its got nothing to do with how good or bad you are it is a legal requirement to do three takeoffs and landings if you haven't flown with PAX in the last 90 days. The discussion is around what is better ... 3 T and Gs or three full stops. Clearly 3 fullstops is better practice than 3 T and Gs. In my case It was suggested I do 3 full stops. Not sure what the actual reg requirement is on the definition.

Come on ya grumpy old bugga, none of us are happy all the time and anyway we make special allowances for you. Sooh don't go because you will deprive us of substantial fun. We will see you at Temora and change your mind. Don't forget those 3 Tasmanian Grandsons of mine ..... LOL
-
Same requirement for GA. I used to to do three full stop landings, that is what my CFI recommended.
-
The two seater Maxair was the one I originally flew, late 80s from memory , it ended up in NZ.
-
Dazz that is a wire braced 503, but is that a Maxair or an Austflight.
-
Will do Scott my number is 0412 221 469 what is yours mate.
-
Oh No Please Noooo! Just bloody fix it for me pettle ... ROFL
-
Gidday David Bloody Mason good to see you mate.
The Maxiar was the first Drifter i ever flew and in my opinion the one I would look for if buying one second hand. David M is yours a Maxair? The Austflight Drifter (Jim Fenton's version) was stronger but too damn heavy in my opinion and the strut braced version even heavier due to the certification requirements for the main wing spar/tubes (triple tubes from memory). The Maxair wire braced 503 is a beautiful nimble little aircraft to fly.

My Brother in law has a property on the Somerton Road half way between Somerton and the Manila road, there are at least 15 cropping paddocks that would meet ALA requirements Yee Ha. I am also attending a friends 80th in Tamworth on Saturday night. Might see if we can touch base buddy. What you doin on the weekend?
-
Hi Scotty, welcome to TAA, how is that Pietenpol Camper going mate? I'll be up your way near Somerton for the weekend.
-
Great clip, but I can't get the music in either screen mode ... bugga.
-
Mate,
Those are very impressive MTOW numbers.
-
Love it, Michael now you will have to clean your teeth to prove it ... LOL
-
There is an opening there, but I will leave it alone ... LOL
-
582 would really make it perform. You will need to recheck weight and balance to know exactly what position it should be mounted in.
-
Welcome Bull,
What is it powered by and where did you buy it from? For all intents and purposes they are a great little aircraft, I think most were 447 powered from memory. They are still available today.

Bit of an overreaction there Tubz? It will take more than one comment in one post on this thread, to head it down the sewer, and if no one takes the bait it wont go anywhere. As another thread starts to head down into the sewer, some of you might like to take a look at the thread "Pro Bono" on Recflying. It is advice given by a qualified lawyer, not the site owner, and while the first post is aimed very broadly, she narrows down to who she is talking to more precisely in a later post.A site which claims to be "Australia's Friendliest Aviation Forum" isn't going to have much credibility if it's the one with the highest percentage of thread locks in aviation. -
Well that depends, we don't know how you fly way down there in kiwi land do we ... LOLNot inverted .... -
What the ... bugga ... they are my favourite wheels ... LOLYou do know don't you David, that even though it's a C185, when it's on floats, it hasn't got a tail wheel? Well, not one that works, that is....BTW SA, you haven't seen my hold offs, they fit tail wheels to C172s and C182s just for me ... ROFL.
-
Hi Adam,
Can you PM me your contact details please so I can discuss float plane endorsement in the C185.
-
Not so sure about that Michael, I have heard a few people say that. It is certainly not so in 95-10 types where you can pretty much do what you want as long as you stay within the weight and wing loading limits.
Why do you say that turbines are not permitted in RAA?
Question about PAX endorsement and T&Gs

Agree Tomo, especially tail wheel aircraft where you go around from a fully stalled 3 pointer. Some T and Gs I have seen over the years are more like Skip and Gos ...
