  1. G'day John B

My T500 cruises 50/55 kts at 5200 revs 1 up, 5400 revs 2 up, My max revs is 6200, I have 15* pitch blocks and a C type gearbox not sure of the ratio. I use about 17 to 18 Lph at these settings.

  2. Thanks SAJ. Good to see you worked out how to load photos - it's not too hard once you get the gist of it.Your solution to the overheating problem is certainly novel, and obviously working. I like the idea of shutting off the lower radiator when its not needed - I hope it is attached well!!

    G'day Pud

I fitted the third radiator back in 1996, when I was running in my engine a friend of mine told me that 80c was red line, he said the VDO water temp gage was a car temp gage, I was glad he told me that at that time because I had been running my engine for about 10 to 15 minutes at different throttle settings. I thought this is taking a long time to warm up and get into the green arc, the water temp was just getting to 80c when he told me 80c was red line, I droped the revs back to idle and shut down the engine and let it cool down, when I started flying my Thruster it was in the summer and the temp got up high all the time, thats why I put the third radiator on and its been good ever since. In the winter it would run to cool so I put a plastic cover over the third radiator to keep the temp up, it was a bit of pain if I went for fly on a warmish day the temp would get a bit high so I would have to land to take the cover off, So before I flew to Raglan flyin in June 2005 I made a ajustable flap to cover the radiator, and its been working great,

  3. G,day Pud.

Here are a couple of photos of my radiator setup, the push pull handle on the left of the dash is for the radiator flap.

With your tracking problem, I was told in my early days when flying a skycraft scout that if your prop was out of track you could put a shim of some sort behind the blade that was back, seeing as you only have one blade out of track you should be able to put a shim behind it to push it forward.

My engine only rev,s to 6000 WOT has done ever since ive owned it, I thought that was the norm until I was told I should be getting about 6500 to 6700. I have 15% pitch block and my carbies are good, Ive never worried about it, it gets of reasonabley quick, climbs out ok, cruises at 50 kts indicated at 5400.

  4. You are talking a language I don't understand Nong!!I don't believe Rotax would be doing any development/improvement work on the 582 which is the same beast since 1999. I appreciate your suggestions though. I strongly suspect it is something simple I have missed, and to find it is a simple method of elimination. Which is why I am, and will be trying any and all suggestions that are reasonably practicable for me to do.

Here's another idea I only thought of last night. On the old engine the exhaust had a turned up outlet so the exhaust gases were expelled upwards, thereby missing the wing. The new exhaust just had a short straight stub which would expell exhaust gases straight onto the wing. So I cut the upturn end off the old exhaust and fitted it to the new one - length of upturn extension about 2" or 50mm. Have a look at the photo and tell me what you think.

Whilst you are looking at the photo take a gander at the radiator setup. A mate of mine - Runt we call him - has suggested I remove the overflow bottle from between the radiators as this could be causing an interrupted airflow to the radiators and engine. So I'll remove it next time I'm at the airfield.

    G'day Pud.

I had the same problem with my silver head 582 T500 when I first started flying it. I had the smaller radiators on my 582 where as a friend of mine had the larger radiators on his and he had no problems with over heating. I mounted one of the small radiators my friend still had off his engine horizontal up under the gearbox and my overheating problem was gone, I also made up a flap that I could activate from the cockpit to cover the third radiator in flight if the engine got to cool, works great. If I knew how to upload pictures I would show you a picture of my setup.

  5. Longreach to Old Station Flyin beteen Rockhampton and Gladstone, In a Thruster T500. Longreach to Alpha fuel stop, Alpha to Springsure to pick up my brother, stay over night in Springsure. Early next morning we took off and headed for Dingo Roadhouse for smoko and fuel, Dingo Roadhouse to Old Station Flyin.

It took me 11 hours to get there, I had about a 10 to 15kt head wind ,The fastest ground speed i got was 35kts, I had a semi trailer catch and pass me.

The trip home had the same stopes except i droped my brother off in Emerald and fueled up,The trip home was alot quicker it only took me 7 hours.

I loved every minute of it, The Old Station Flyin was great. Im going to fly to Monto for the Northern RAA Flyin later in the year

  7. G'day and Welcome SAJ,What part of Australia do you live in? I'm from Leeming, a suburb of Perth WA.

Sounds like you would have some flying stories to tell when you feel like it:wink:

I fly a T500 but did my initial training back in the late 90's in a Drifter.

    Cheers,

    Pud

    G'day Pud.

I live in Longreach, central QLD. I also own a T500,I bought it as a wreck from a bloke in Cloncurry back in 1994 it took me about a year to rebuild it.

I did 9 hours in a Drifter in 1984 learning to fly from the bloke I brought my Skycraft Scout from, this was before you needed a licence, I could takeoff and fly the Drifter but I could'nt get the landings right. When a ultralight instructor by the name of Bill Morris came through Longreach I did my licence with him in a T300, I reckon the Drifter and the Thruster are great aircraft,Tail draggers are great.

  8. G'day

I just joined up, Ive been mad about aircraft since I was a kid ,I like ww11 aircraft but could never afford one, also like ultralights I have been into ultralights since the early days.

Starting playing around with Skycraft Scout ultralights around 1983 before 2 seater trainers became available, crashed once. Did my ultralight licence in a Thruster T300 in 1992 and have been flying ever since.

    Cheers
