  1. The definition of ignorant is someone who lacks knowlege, such as yourself....

Crikey Fred! If you actually read my post you'll see that I was supporting your argument. I am not criticising your choice of aircraft. You might even be surprised at the variety of aircraft I happily fly. Shessh.....

  2. You wouldn't get me in one of those things!

Definition of 'one those things' - anything someone else flies that is different to what I fly which is obviously more dangerous than my chosen flying machine.....insane.gif.b56be3c4390e84bce5e5e6bf4f69a458.gif

Funny how the most ignorant are the best critics!

  3. How many Jabiru engines are there in service? Probably 7000 or more. My point is that this is the first time I have heard of an induction manifold coming loose on a Jab. Clearly something was missed during re assembly after the bulk strip like loctite and correct torque setting. Not good and whoever signed it out at Jabiru will be getting a rocket no doubt!

Gentreau, you can safety wire cap-head screws - take a look at the exhaust manifold screws on any 2 stroke Rotax.

    Cheers, Laurie

  4. What is 1.3 times the full flap stall speed of the J170? If it is 52 knots it appears you may be having to wait for 8 knots to wash off while you are in ground effect. Being within one wing span of the ground gives something like a 30% reduction in drag thereby increasing the time it takes for excess speed to wash off. Do you really need 65 knots over the fence?

  5. No Geoff, not much powered flying these days although I did give Mel Dougherty's Jab SP6 a run a couple of weeks ago after his fitting of Rotec water cooled heads. I sold my Starlet (pictured) back in November last year but there is light at the end of the tunnel - a Jabiru UL 450 project that I took on in March. That's coming along in my shed. This was an unfinished project so even though 12 years old, still brand new. Cheers, Laurie.

  6. Hi Derekliston let us know when you get to fly one , l am putting Savannah wing tanks in mine and a savannah header tank see if you can find a savannah they are similar to the 701 you might get some ideas of fuel system there are more savannahs out there than 701s.cheers Geoff.

Hi Geoff, Davids 701 will certainly benefit from some tlc. Are you still just south of the pistol club? Laurie

  7. Bloody hard to find a good switch anymore Tomo............................................Maj...024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

Are they silver switches? I suspect they could be the same as those in my Jabbie UL450.

  8. I dont think there is a snowball's chance in hell of having nikasil/alloy barrels without thru' bolts. If chrome moly barrels crack and break what chance has alloy? They (barrels) would have to be so thick as to make any extra heat loss gained from having alloy barrels a negative....Going to thru bolts ( studs in c/case through to head) whilst absolutely bullet proof would make a complete redesign necessary. It's not going to happen......As an aside..... I take umbridge at the comment by KEENAVIATOR .( 6 above this) it's derogat0ry and uncalled for, a response I would expect, from someone with their head firmly in the sand

Looks like I hit a nerve! Oh well.... 074_stirrer.gif.5dad7b21c959cf11ea13e4267b2e9bc0.gif

  9. I am in a syndacite that owns a J230D that has had major problems with our engineThe question needs to be asked: was the purchase of these circlips only a cost saving measure to ensure Rod Stiff could enjoy a more profitable retirement at our expense?

Dont get me wrong, I enjoy flying a Jab, but I have a major issue with their engine

It appears to me that Rod is only intereseted in a profit that enables him to live the life he desires and not in ensuring that our lives are safe

This is the only conclusion I can come to given that at Natfly this year, when questioned about the overheating problems with jab engines, his response was that they are tuned to Bundaberg weather and the weather in Melbourne was different.

    WTF!!!

Does Rod think we are all idiots?

He does appear to have a dry sense of humour. Perhaps his response was a reaction to yet another non constructive criticism by someone ranting emotionally.

  10. There are different forms of gliding too. How about HANG gliding and PARA gliding? I took up paragliding about three years ago and found it very addictive, so much so that I have sold my beloved Corby Starlet due to insufficient space to carry my PG. I now have a Jabbie UL450 kit project which is nearing completion. By the way, the UL450 has a claimed glide ratio of 18:1 and sink rate of 250' per minute so I'm thinking there are going to be fun quiet times (deliberately) apart from the sound of a vario happily beeping away. Plus of course there is now room for a couple of PG wings and associated gear.

  11. ... Was a little worried when I was building it as I had read some really negative reviews... Bahhh Humbug to them,,,, I like this little plane so far and what else as good could I get for the money...

Well done! Interesting that there is another oldish project being completed. I am in the process of completing a UL-450 and very much looking forward to flying it. Regards, Laurie

  12. The ATSB, with its limited resources, only investigates incidents that have the greatest safety outcome, mainly for the general public. So they tend not to investigate any RAA incidents and some GA incidents that are inherently high risk such as those involving aerobatics. My guess is that the Old Bar incident did have the potential to impact on quite a few of the general public and so was investigated. An incident involving somebody practising aerobatics (GA) out in a training area will probably not be investigated, but an aerobatic incident at an air show probably will.

As RA flyers we can only carry on passenger, we're not allowed in controlled airspace, and we fly very low weight aircraft so the risk to the general public is perceived as lower...therefore investigations are left up to the police/coroner who are legally required (I think?) to investigate any death.

    Correct-

If the ATSB decides an accident does not fit the criteria for them to conduct the investigation then police are directed do do so on behalf of the Coroner (fatal accidents).

The police prepare an inquest brief which contains statements from witnesses and 'expert witnesses', accident scene diagrams, photos and whatever else that will help the Coroner make a finding.

If there is a weakness in procedures, design issues etc which played a part in the accident, the Coroner will include recommendations in his finding.

Hope this helps clear things up.

  13. Hi folks,

Laurie Armstrong, 50, from cold Drouin here. My background in aviation is hang gliding, weightshift microlights, 3 axis ultralights, G.A. and paragliding.

    My aircraft:

    • hang gliders - Moyes Mars 170, Enterprise Wings Aero 170, Enterprise Wings Foil B Race, Moyes SX4 (current)

    • WM - Pegasus XL-Q, Airborne Buzzard/Arrow (scary machine),Pegasus Quantum

    • G.A. - Cessna 150A which I converted to a Texas Tail Dragger - very nice machine

    • 3 axis u/l - Quicksilver GT400, Corby Starlet CJ-1, which was a major rebuild, now being enjoyed by Darren Chaffer at West Sale. My current project is a Jabiru UL-450 which should be finished in the next 6 months big_grin.gif - this has room for a passenger (wife of children) or a paraglider or 2 and will take me to places such as Bright, Laurieton or Manilla (NSW) - Lots of great paragliding sites with nearby airfields...

    • paragliders - Apco Fiesta M, Niviuk Hook M, Niviuk Zion 19 and Niviuk Artik 3 27
