had a nice flight back to Roadvale from Boonah yesterday afternoon, in very nice conditions
Kiwi and i took off together and we flew in company overhead Moogerah Dam, some very nice mountain scenery around there
poor old David Mason was stuck on the ground (lives nr the dam) watching us fly over, sent me a PM to say he saw us go over
i thought Kiwi had gone back to Boonah after i struck out for Roadvale from the dam, did a two way flypast of the runway at Roadvale (nil wind) b4 setting up to land
taxiied in, cooled down, turned off, and could still hear a Drifter!!! turned around, and there was Kiwi taxiing in behind me
a little cool and some big smooth areas of lift/sink on the day but some V nice flying with 2 x 40 min flts
cheers for now

sorry Alan, should have put in more info, just getting started getting everybody notified properly
it's traditionally held at Boonah, we call it a 'breakfast' so we don't have insurance hassles and the need for all sorts of public/visitor 'safety arrangements'
sunday is a good day for it so those coming a long way can spend saturday getting there, stay the night (camping OK either underwing or in the hangar) then zip off at lunchtime sunday
when i have all the final info i'll make formal posts
cheers

demo version is the floatplane so get that one for free if you're not sure abt it
it's at Ant's Airplanes, the most fun you can have for $20 with your pants on

g'day guys
been doing some last light flights betwixt Roadvale and Boonah at last light lately, very nice time to be in the air
at one stage all the ground below was in shade, the sun was over the range and i was still in sun - unreal...
btw, a Drifter has just been released for Microsoft Flight Simulator FSX, based on my acft actually
there is a demo version on floats available for nix but if you want the wheeled version you have to buy the package
at $20 it is an absolute bargain, look at Ant's Airplanes for the Drifter, Roadvale (where i hangar 455) is also available, freeware
cheers for now

ps still gonna do a Drifter Fly-In at Boonah later in the year, date to be set

well my 582 has always been upright (installed at the factory) so i really don't get the inverted thing
Kiwi (legendary Drifter Hero of Flying Tigers fame) recently upgraded his 503 (inverted) to a 582 - and he inverted that too !!!
never really got that but he know more about Drifters than i will could ever hope to accumulate
his Drifter is a real low weight machine, no electric starter etc - when he tours (he's been to Avalon from YBOA) his toothbrush is sawn in half to save 10 grams !!!!!
btw, on the subject of engine failures, Kiwi says:
"there are only two kinds of Drifter pilots - those who have had an engine failure, and those who haven't had one - YET!!"
Kiwi walks with a noticeable limp, courtesy of the kind of event referred to above
which is why i practice engine failure drills just about every time i fly
every time i start to relax and think "gee, this is nice" i automatically pull the throttle and find somewhere to put her down
right down to 100 feet, to make sure ima doin it right and not taking the option at 500 feet of "yeh i reckon i cooda made that paddock ok"
on another tangent, have yous een the stuff on the 'web about fitting Suzuki 3 cylinder motors to trikes to replace 582s?
also popular (in Europe and Canada) is the BMW R1000 conversions - now that gives me a woody
problem is it would cost about the same as the value of me Drifter ...
cheers for now

sorry, forgot to mention:
i've had two prop encounters of the nasty kind
one was an instructors seat cushion - he forgot to take it out of the back seat when he got out and i went on to do some solo work)
the other was part of an exhaust spring - now i make sure my red silicone gunk (and safety cable) is set up so that if a spring breaks (and they do, regularly) the prop will be OK
-
my first thought of a reply went along the lines of "it would be like taking a shower with a raincoat on" and that brought back some pleasant memories
then i had a brain fade (all the blood rushed to another part of my body and there warn't enough left for normal funtioning)
sorry, just kidding, as Goose would say "I crack myself up, I really do"
the machine dazza38 is referring to is owned by Ian Walker, sorta makes his Drifter look like a F16
you could try to get in contact with him via the Flying Tigers website I guess
next time i'm at the Tigers hangar, ie. next time i fly, i could take some pix if ya like ??
but hey really, my opinion is that if ya want an aircraft with doors, buy a plastic parrot (or sumfin similar)
cheers

g'day all
for those of you flightsimmers out there, some wonderful news - Anthony (of Ant's Airplanes - take a peek at his website) is doing the final touches to the Drifter for FSX
i've been helping out with the beta testing (among other things) and it is coming along nicely, it will be just brilliant
in fact you may be tempted to get into flightsimming after seeing the pix - if that's the case, let me know and i'll do some posts on what you need to do to set up a proper system
cheers for now

damn nazis etc
oh hey, didn't realise it was you who was the culprit m8
i just heard the story from some local Boonah guys (fishermen) who reckon the nazis on the dam are over the top, never any warnings, always a fine, not too friendly and basically a pain in the A
Roadvale is a lil strip i lease from a farmer, he used to fly a Jab out of there
it's abt 6nm north of Boonah, type in Roadvale Qld for Google Earth and the township will come up centre screen, the field is just to the west - GE co-ords are:
27 55 10 43S - 152 40 42 08 E
if you're into flight simulation (FSX) you can download it from the Ant's Airplanes website
cheers

YBOA and h2o
yeh Heon it is a bit bumpy in places - maybe they should try the old reinforcing steel mesh (aka concrete slab reinforcing stuff) that i have heard so much about
apparently you tow a sheet of this stuff behind a 4WD and it does wonders, keeps the grass down but also smooths out the surface nicely - gonna try that at Roadvale soon i hope
btw, i heard a rumour that the blokes in charge of Moogerah Dam are a bit silly about aircraft landing there "without the proper permit" - surely an amphibian can land on a stretch of h2o without some dill :csm: racing up in his boat and demanding to see 'your paperwork" ???
cheers for now, let me know when you're gonna be in the area, would love to see ya drop in at Roadvale International

Ant's Drifter for FSX
hiya guys
spent some time with Anthony on Sunday, another flight in the Drifter around Roadvale for some more sound recordings
the Drifter will be payware but as you would expect, Ant will offer a Lot for the outlay - you should see the level of detail he is putting in, it is outstanding (the air filters are a work of art)
having said that there will be a freebie, i'll let details of that wait for release, as a little surprise for ya's
another surprise will be the work Ant's doing on a certain GPS, some amazing stuff there too
cheers for now, shouldn't be too long before you are all zipping around the skies in a Drifter

hey Gnome
i agree with you totally re. two aircraft of the same make being different to fly
i learned to fly at a school that had two Drifters, one i loved, the other i hated!
go figure...

stinson flight on flight simulator
hey guys
i've flown the route (Archerfield - Lismore) in a Stinson Tri Motor in stormy weather and it is just scary
trying to keep visual contact with the ground while the aircraft is being thrown all around the sky...nasty
2012 is the 75th anniversary of the crash, i'm going to organise an event including the Stinson Room at the Beaudesert Historical Museum, the Beaudesert Times for copies of the newspaper articles, Bernard O'Reilly's grave and Westray's grave
cheers for now

sorry guys, can't really do it midweek
it takes a lot of time to get it all disconnected and packed up in the car, and vice verca
might try to do something after christmas, silly season is upon us and the weather is a big factor
looking forward to showing off the system, either at Airsport or Tigers, a satdee night would be best for me
cheers for now

nasty surprise during training
my CFI during training showed me what happens if you stall a Drifter in a badly co-ordinated (too much or not enough rudder) in a climbing turn
the acft flipped inverted in a flash and dived toward the ground nose first !!!
took 700 feet to recover - his words were "now where would you be if that happened at 500 feet in the circuit, David?"
the answer of course is 200 feet under the ground :black_eye:

link for boonah
here ya go m8, this is Ant's Airplanes link for scenery
there's also a link there for Roadvale as well (and the freeware Tiger Moth)
btw, if we can't organise a flightsim meeting/demo at Airsport Qld we should be able to do it one night at the Tigers hangar, a satdee night would be best
cheers

oh yeah
hey thirsty
that last comment was spot on
you go and fly when the conditions are not too flash (as long as you are competent) and when things go a little scary on ya further down the track, you got that experience behind ya and it means you handle the 'not too scary' stuff with ease
cheers, loved the vids btw (had no idea the Drifter tailfeathers moved around that much)

sportstar LSA
g'day Ryan
you might want to have a look at Anthony Lynch's new Tecnam P2002 for FSX, it is probably the closest thing you could ever get to a top class LSA acft like the Sportstar
it's payware but is worth every cent, in fact is is spectacular value for $20 (i just wrote a review on it in the December edition of Aviator magazine)
it's available from the FlightSim Store, check it out at the Ant's Airplanes website
cheers

boonah etc
going back through the old posts and saw this thread
Anthony has now also developed Roadvale (the airstrip i lease from a farmer who used to fly a Jab from there, 6nm north of Boonah)
it is a work of art, as is his recent payware release of the Tecnam P2002
cheers
