  1. ultralight for FSX g'day guys, and particularly to Owi wonderful news, my friend - the guy who did the brilliant redev of Boonah for OzX, Anthony Lynch, is working on a Tecnam for FSX i have his second version on my system at the moment and i can assure you that when this is finished it will be freeware and it will be as good as if not better than some of the payware aircraft for FSX he is currently working on the final version and the way he goes about things i would expect that to be ready quite soon in case i get sidelined keep in touch with me and i will let you know how to get a copy btw, i write the flightsim articles for Aviator and Australian Flying magazines, so i do get to see a LOT of software - Anthonys tecnam will be a blinder !!! cheers Boleropilot
  2. Roadvale g'day m8 Roadvale isn't all that user friendly - from the north there's high ground and power lines, no problem for a Drifter though...i only use about a quarter of the 500 metres so i can aim to touch down at the halfway point if i want to when it's gusty from the east or south-east the turbulence from the trees on the eastern side of the strip is just scary and the owner (farmer) doesn't mow the whole strip (cattle fodder, apparently) so parking and turn-arounds can be difficult apart from all of that, it's gr8 !!! any time you're around at the Tigers clubhouse, drop in, if i'm there we can go for a quick squirt up to Roadvale for a touch and go in the Teccy if ya like cheers bp (tonxy)
  3. g'day guys was doing some work on 455 yesterday and discovered the replacement fuel drain i'd bought for the lower tank was the wrong size so there i was with an aircraft with not a drop of fuel in it and it was quite a nice day for a fly...one quick phone call to Kiwi at Boonah (6nm south of my lil strip at Roadvale) and he said he would be right there with a spare he had and he thought it might be a good idea to bring along a couple of mates (see attached pic) two other Tigers also came along for the fun but didn't land due to parking problems - they just did an approach and "go around" now if i can only get some decent weather for a change for the annual Drifter Breakfast at Boonah later in the year, i'll be in heaven... cheers bp
  4. them damned birds !!! - well, one variety anyway... first i gotta say upfront, i love birds - i've even shared a thermal with a wedgetailed eagle when i was flying paragliders, my best bird encounter ever and the little fairy wrens that inhabit the shrubs around my workshed, both blueys and black/reds, just gorgeous little creatures - and watching pelicans fly along just inches above the water - Wow... but willy *%^&$ing wagtails - they really ring my bell !!! they have crapped all over my Drifter in its little hangar at Roadvale, and the fact that she's a wire-braced model makes covers a real nightmare to fit/remove i've tried xmas decorations and plastic hawks and twirling reflective thingos and CDs and i think the little b/w mongrels actually shat on those as well !!! i will be spending some time up a ladder soon stringing fishing line along the beams they like to AIM from, and i will try some grease in certain places as well, but not on the wires, not keen on that idea if that doesn't stop the problem then it will be lead poisoning for sure....but i might have a closer look at some roll-on covers that go over the wings, working on that design, four separate ones that go on between the wires, rolled down the wing from the leading edge - might just work btw, anyone know of a good company for making up cockpit/engine covers?? boleropilot
  5. fabulous pix Jordy one of my targets is to land on a beach in my WB582 top of the list is a trip to Yamba, there's a little airfield there at Palmers Island anybody landed there? cheers bp

    Drifter Bits

i have to add my five cents worth here... Kiwi is The Man to talk to about this (and many other Drifter modification/maintenance questions) he has been an absolute gem in helping me sort out quite a few problems with my WB582 and i cannot recommend him enough he is based at Boonah and as he has been generous to provide his mobile number that says it all (remember, AH weekdays only pls) cheers boleropilot (also know in some circles as cropduster dave) ps if your girlfiend is a sheep, don't bring her along to boonah - fair warning !
  7. g'day guys n gals, long time no write - but still i pilot me lil Drifter around the skies of Boonah, the strip at Roadvale is a treat (it's on Google Earth if ya wanna peek) anyways the date has been set for this years annual Drifter Breakfast, as with the inaugral event held in 2008 (when the weather actually scared chopper pilots out of the sky - long story) it will be held at the Flying Tigers clubhouse at Boonah airfield date is Sunday 27th September and ALL aircraft are welcome - as is usually the case with these events, official Drifter status will be granted to any non Drifter/Fisher aircraft attending. cost is a huge five bucks but for that ya get the famous Tigers breakfast. AND because of the cruising speed of Drifters, breakfast will be open right up until lunchtime - how good is that.... as an extra little bonus, all taildragger pilots attending will be given a copy of my infamous REAL MEN FLY TAILDRAGGERS sticker - can you believe that some people actually took exception to these when i first introduced them thumb_down:censored: anyways alla youse pilots and lookers and dreamers, get there any way you can on the day and see the biggest gathering of Drifters/Fishers the world has ever seen - ah well, we can only hope  cheers guys, any questions drop me a post boleropilot alias cropduster dave
  8. just found this old post because i was surfing for info on what oil to use same oil i use for the engine? bp

    pilot weight

bugger yeah thanks Frank i was hoping there may be some chance of a slight realignment of the horizontal stabiliser but of course i am still hoping to (somehow) get some of this lard off me gut !!! btw, had a funny (NOT ha ha) thing happen to me on sunday - flew down to boonah to say hi to the tigers and was surprised at the lack of radio trans on the way - called inbound and got a call from the airsports tecnam asking me if i was aware of "strip conditions" turns out the strip was virtually closed due to soggy patches - i ended up landing dry OK but hit a big wet patch during taxying - needed a fair bit of throttle to get through it but there was no real impact as such, but the Drifter got drenched from the mainwheels back on the way back to roadvale i notice a low freq vibration through the pod, it reduced so i flew on to roadvale (two minutes away) and landed straight in - not sure if i stopped the wheels from spinning or not after takeoff so maybe that was the problem, it was a short takeoff on the dry runway available and a bit tight so maybe i forgot the "brakes ON during climbout" thingo did a big post-flight inspection and found the main tailwheel support bracket broken, the break is in behind the little alloy bracket so you couldn't see the break, it was actually the funny angle of the tailwheel that made me look a lot closer in that area wayne F is sending me replacements, i'm grounded until i get the new ones bolted on cheers bp

    pilot weight

love them pies too !!! hey guys, interesting thread considering my little problem i'm currently 88kg dripping wet naked (please, no comments) and the WB582 i bought a lil while ago didn't have a trim tab, and i needed continual back stick we added a trim tab (thanks Wayne) and i found i used a LOT of trim to maintain level flight then we added a 1.5kg weight (scuba divers belt) to the tailwheel support and the result was a definite improvement but STILL i need some trim to maintain level flight at cruise i will be taking the lil devil down to visit Wayne Fisher in Lismore soon for some running repairs, he'll be taking her for a spin and doing some weight/balance checks while we're there (it will probably be a Flying Tigers overnighter) watch this space !! boleropilot ps ya gotta love them tigers - i say i need to take my aircraft down to lismore for some work and they all say "yeah good one dave we'll all go with you - no point in going by yaself" - how good is that ?
  11. nice place ! geez m8 you have got some setup there now i am a plotter, i'm always making plans for the future and most of them never come to fruition - but... i would love to drop in to say g'day sometime, but i would like to do it with some mates how do you feel about a visit from the Flying Tigers at Boonah? twood be a long trip but a beauty, the guys fly Drifters (with the occasional Savannah and Jabiru) they do all sorts of trips and take all their gear with them for overnighters, i'm a newbie there so haven't had the fun of joining them on one of their trips as yet twooden be overnight, trip like that takes some planning, but it something i would like to add to my List of Things To Do watcha reckon ??? bp
  12. Wow hey Frank, looks like a real sweet lil machine i'll let ya know when i need new skins m8, they look brilliant btw, where is your airfield? give us the lat/long so i can check it out on GE cheers m8 bp
  13. real men well ya know i thought learning to fly that lil beast was gonna be a doddle - it's just another taildragger fer crissaake.....well, not really here's me with my 30 years of aviation experience, flying in army aviation aircraft in and out of trees without doors on the acft (fixed and rotary wing), building and flying radio control aircraft (powered and gliders), skydiving, paragliding, working as a crew chief on hot air balloons, building a top class flight simulation system for my computer, and reading everything i could find on the subject of aviation, including meteorology and aerodynamics........and then....... strapping on a Drifter and finding all of that amounted to diddley squat trust me guys, there is NOTHING like arguing with wunna them lil devils and eventually getting them to do what YOU want them to do (instead of them doing what THEY want to do - which is the OPPOSITE of what you are trying to achieve) and those lovely lil Drifters, i tell ya, they are the most wonderful lil hairyplane the Gods of Aviation ever invented - so full of promise, so hard to master (I'm a LONG way away from that) and without a doubt the most fun a bloke can have with his pants on here endeth the lesson btw, i'm quite fond of Drifters, tis why i got the stickers made bp

    REAL MEN ?

g'day guys saw a sticker ages ago that made me chuckle, tried to find one, no luck, so i had a bunch made up - it reads - REAL MEN FLY TAILDRAGGERS sticker is red capitals, letters only (no background), letters are 20mm high, total sticker is 40cm long they don't fold well so i will post them in a standard envelope (cut between real/men) in two pieces, that gives you an option of how to mount them anyway i was told they are good quality material (5 year life), if i sell them for $5 inc postage i will make a dollar or two at the end of the day and yeah i know ya aint supposed to send cash in the mail but a five buck note to me via snailmail is the simplest way, who's gunna know cheers bp D A TONKS 620 WOOLOOMAN ROAD WOOLOOMAN QLD 4310
  15. wot a blowout hey JimG no problem m8, even the birds had problems today we watched a magpie trying to make headway at one stage, he stopped flapping for a few seconds and started flying backwards !!!!!!!!! the big wave clouds being generated over the range kept blowing in across the 'field, right up to 1700 hours it was still blowing 20 knots plus and we regularly saw 30+ during the day (i left 455 tied down at the field, couldn't get her home) i actually flew in from Roadvale at 0745 and had a lovely little flight, not long after that it all turned to XXXXe better luck for next year is the plan, in 2009 it will be the last saturday in september look for an article on The Inaugral Drifter Hurricane in the RAA mag soon hope to see ya's all in 2009 !!! bp
  16. Drifter Get-Together g'day guys little reminder that the inaugral Drifter Breakfast is now only two weeks away, date is Saturday 6th September, at the Flying Tigers clubhouse @ Boonah Airfield, 0800 on all aircraft and Drifter devotees welcome, come along and see the biggest collection of Drifters on the planet (well maybe not this year, but there will be quite a lot - in future years this will be THE Drifter event in Oz) hoping to see youse guys there  bp (alias cropduster dave)
  17. oh yeah, no question gonna be a hoot 4 sure cd
  18. g'day guys my lil WB-582 has settled down nicely at Roadvale (it's a 6nm flight to Boonah) and apart from some minor sorting she is coming along nicely i haven't seen such a thing as a Drifter event so i put it to the members of the Flying Tigers at Boonah today (at the meeting) and they have agreed to host an annual Drifter/Fisher get-together, with moi as the organiser to avoid the hassles associated with a 'fly-in' the event will be run simply as a breakfast for Drifter/Fisher pilots - if you want to make a weekend of it you are welcome to camp overnight, either in the hangar or under the wing inaugral event is set for the first saturday of spring, when all Drifters will be shaking their wings in anticipation of some sweet flying - the date is Saturday 6th September aircraft other than Drifters/Fishers will be awarded temporary Drifter status for the day ;) please spread the word, we want to see as many Drifters and Fishers at Boonah on the day as possible cheers for now cropduster dave alias boleropilot
  19. thanks guys i did think about the bit of wool but i just want to be sure my turns are co-ordinated, lil ball was used during my training and i don't see why i shouldn't keep on that track i have no interest whatsoever in either my rate of turn OR emulating airline pilots, btw bp
  20. g'day guys finally got my own lil Drifter at a strip nr Roadvale, she doesn't have a turn co-ordinator (slip and ball thingy) and i really want to make damn sure my turns are coordinated tried surfing google but no luck, anybody got a contact for one? prefer new, prefer Oz seller if poss thanks !! boleropilot
  21. thanks guys, got the details from the RAA website bp
  22. g'day callide thanks m8 i looked at the racq trip planner and it tells me it's about a 7 hour drive from wowan to iflracrombe, so if he has a 100 knot acft that would be a days flying i guess looked up the name in online white pages and didn't get a hit so unless you have some other contact details it's a bit of a dead end m8 still waiting for a couple of possibilities for the inspection, might even fly out there meself (commercial) cheers and thanks bp
  23. g'day guys pls take a look at the post i just put on the General Discussion forum, titled "aircraft inspector required" cheers bp
  24. g'day guys i am interested in a Drifter that is for sale, located near Longreach does anybody know of someone who would be willing to act as an independent inspector of this aircraft for me? (way too far for me to do it, and i aint qualified anyways) i am willing to pay for flight costs for anyone who lives within a couple of hours flying time (each way) plus an agreed fee, for a written report sent to me via email i am ready to act on this immediately - all suggestions/offers considered (i will also be asking R A Aus if they can put me in contact with someone who can help) cheers boleropilot (nr Boonah)
