Write yourself a few phrases that you will use regularly from taxi, take off, departure and arrival, practice them regularly and it will become second nature.

If you have an apple iPad or phone get the app live ATC and listen to aircraft at different airports, after a while you will g3t confident don’t give up just practice when you get an opportunity

  1. Good on you sir a little thumpy on that route i,d think eh.

West to East went quickly coming back it was a bit bumpy for a while so we climbed up to avoid the bumps and the headwind hit us, all in all it was a great trip very enjoyable

  2. Hi JG,

I was also in YBDV, I flew in Thursday & left Monday. It was a very windy day for arrival on Thursday with a strong X-Wind blowing on our arrival.

We tracked from Bindoon (Perth) to Kalgoorlie-Forrest -William Creek -Birdsville, coming back we went direct to Coober Peedy - Forrest-Kalgoorlie-Albany, West to East great tailwinds at 9,500 around 35-40kts.

    Cheers

  3. I use both paper & Oz Runways on my IPad.

My back ups are GPS Garmin 196 & OzRunways on my phone.

I have flown from Albany WA to Kununurra in the Kimberley & return with no issues or the need to seek a redundancy as a back up.

Now there is a lot of “tiger country” in between those destinations, on any trip I do not use one source as the be all or end all. They are all just tools that I have in my kit.

I have also experienced turbulence, bad weather and the need to divert, my own experience has been that “I” find it easier to use my IPad and goto on my GPS then read a paper map while bouncing around.

This has been “my” experience I am not saying that it is a one size fits all it has just been what has worked for ME.

So in summary we are all different and all fly different aircraft with different forms of navigation and have varying levels of flight experience both local and extended journeys.

    Cheers

  4. Ok.. I thought I was pretty clear - RESTRICTED - NOT CTR. The CTR was in fact recently removed. It is now R421A.

No point calling the tower - the dude in the tower can't overrule a CASA Regulation or an RAA requirement. So he or she could very well say... yeah.. go fly mate, squark 4265!! But that does not mean legally I am allowed to fly there.

I knew this thread would end up like it has, because I have already had the same discussions with local pilots that I know. Everyone seems to have a different answer. LOL! The worrying thing is - we should ALL know this inside out - and I don't, along with many others - and that's a worry.

  5. Birddog,

Have you telephoned the tower that you are referring to and ask them straight up rather than look for answers on here?

My aircraft is hangared in an area that has similarities to what you have described, prior to taking up the option to lease the hangar I telephoned the RAAF base tower to ask what they will/will not accept in terms of aircraft movements.

    Cheers

  6. I received the following from my Insurance Broker a few days ago:The aviation insurance landscape in Australia has changed in recent months, this includes major insurer, Allianz, withdrawing from the Australian aviation market from January 1st this year and AIG announcing in May that they are withdrawing from our aviation market effective immediately. The other major insurer, Swiss Re are showing a reluctance to insure lower valued GA aircraft. Over the past 5 years GA premiums in Australia have reduced and are the lowest we have experienced in the past 25 years. Insurers are telling us that this has put them in a loss making position and premiums at these levels are unsustainable and a major factor in Allianz’s and AIG’s decision to leave our market. The Australian Aviation Insurance market has reduced from four major insurers to two in the past five months and a swing to increase the premium pool is inevitable.

The above was written by my Broker and included with my Insurance renewal for our RV9A.

Premiums have indeed reduced over the previous few years however, are now on the way up again. We were lucky in that the premium has only increased by $67.00 for the next twelve months. I note that Allianz have withdrawn from the Aus market. I believe RAAus have some Insurance with Allianz along with QBE? WILL it be too much longer before we are told by RAAus that they are to drop the Insurance cover for members due cost or availability???

    Mike

I received the same news from my broker for my RV7A in July

  8. G'day.Just joined and looking for others than own, fly, want or interested in RV4s.

I'm on the lookout for one, I've made an offer on a nice lookin 4 in the west but we can agree on the price.

So I'll try to fund something here.

I'd also like to yarn with anyone on the subject of ozrunways, ipads and Dynon.

As I'm a bit primitive, and technology is changing at a fast rate l'm havin a bit of trouble keepin up.

I use an axe, but I've been told there's chainsaws out there now.

    Welcome Thunda

  9. The pressure of an arrangement may have caused the pilot to take off when he probably knew he should not have. It's the hardest thing of all to disappoint your passengers by cancelling or delaying a flight when they ( the passengers ) don't know enough to see the danger. Those angel flights come with additional pressure because of a medical appointment.

If CASA want to do something useful, they could provide pointers aimed at helping pilots to say "no" in such circumstances. The medical profession could also help by letting patients know they will be flexible with appointment times when an aircraft is involved. CASA could help with this too.

In my opinion we create our own pressure.I cant think of a bigger disappointment than the loss of life.

If CASA want to do something? Are you serious? If having your name and family/friends dragged through a traumatic event is not enough then nothing will be.

Society is great a blaming someone else, the buck stops with the individual.
