  2. Apparently I may have offended some of the Jabiru fraternity, that was not my intention. I copied from the Yahoo 7 site, none of it are my own words except the thread title.Regards Bill

Bill I found nothing offensive in your post , you merely passed on what was reported , as would be expected . Interestingly Mardy I did see the plug for a single seater at Jabiru a few years ago . I think it has since been relegated to the mezzanine floor with the gyro copter etc. , due to the GFC and the rising AUD/USD. Like any sensible outfit , they probably reckon that this is the time to focus on their core business , keeping those projects for better times .

  3. A pilot has walked away from an ultra-light plane crash near Bairnsdale in eastern Victoria, escaping just before the plane burst into flames.Police say the single seater home-made aircraft, called a Jabiru, was flying low over farmland when it lost power about 1.00pm.

The pilot realised he was not going to make it over some nearby powerlines, so he tried to fly under them.

The plane got caught on an optical cable, causing it to crash.

The pilot managed to escape the wreckage with only a scratch on his arm.

The aircraft was definitely not a Jabiru . Have not positively identified the a/c yet , but the vision clearly showed the burnt remains of a metal framed fuselage .

  4. Sorry Bob but that's not the case in a Wi Fi only IPad. It does not have 3G nore does it have a GPS. Tis is the reason for my advice to teacher to a phone. If you have a 3G iPhone (seems you do) then yes you have a GPS and you will move on the OzRunways map. A WiFi iPad will not do this (no GPS).... The reason we teapot her to a phone or use 3G has little to do with navigation... It allows us to get Internet for live weather, NOTAMS and map download if we did no do it before departing. Internet or 3G will give us faster Gps at start up only as it allows the IPad to get a rough location of where you are using phone towers. It then knows satellite locations based on that information and will speed up satellite lock ins.. This is what is called assisted GPS.. There has been lots of misunderstanding for some reason in regards to how iPads and thier Gps and network options are... This subject has been covered at some of the OzRunways Seminars and can be read about on thier website... I hope this info is helpful to others that are looking at an IPad option. Several options a greatly different price points. For me I mainly wanted an IPad for OzRunways so my above option was the most cost effective way of doing what is need....

  5. Hi Gents/Tomo, I'm planning a trip next weekend out west near Cunnamulla, from Caboolture, where is the best place to refuel, avgas?[/quote

Cunnamulla has Avgas with credit card facility

  6. I am going to put my tight **** point on this one.... If you are wanting to save some money and are getting an iPad for your flying then this is what I did......Purchase a second hand IPad 1 WiFi only (no 3G) on E-bay for about $250. Then purchase an external GPS for the iPad from $45 to $100 ,, I purchased the Tom Tom at $45. I then use my phone or IPhone and tether it to my iPad for live Internet on my current phone plan.. All works really really well for under $300.. Also keep in mind that having a separate GPS will allow you iPad to last a lot longer on its batts.....

If you purchase an IPad with 3G and WiFi you will need an additional phone account for your iPad (more cost). If you choose to use a pre paid plan the Internet is charged at a really really high rate. The IPad will cost lots more and really do nothing better in terms of running OzRunways.. Oh and the batter will go flat in no time and you will need to always run it from power in the plane...

I get 12 hours running between charges on my external GPS and the iPad runs all day just with WiFi running to talk to my phones Internet. As my phone is an IPhone I also have a copy of OzRunways running in that also as a backup...

I also run a Garmin GPS196 as a third backup just in case my compass gets James and I am not able to use the old outdated method of Navigation.......Oh look out here come the rocks and stones LOL

    Mardy's view

My IPad lasts at least 4 hours when using OzRunways . By then we have usually done enough " stick hours " for a couple of oldies and recharge that night . It is not necessary to have your WiFi + 3G IPad connected to an ..... " additional phone account " , as it still has a GPS , it just works a bit faster when connected to the 3G network !

  7. thinking of getting an ipad. And will be useing it when i fly. what i need to know is how the map systems work ? is it like GPS or does it work off phone towersAnd do you need a particular version of the ipad.

    thanks

You will need a WiFi + 3G IPad , as the one without 3G doesn't have a GPS. The GPS is 'assisted' by the 3G network to get a faster ,more accurate fix . I have a 32 GB model but many use a 16 GB . You will need to download software eg OzRunawys or similar to use in the a/c.

  8. G'Day Frank ,

Look forward to many pics from you and Maj.

We have 11o C here at 1000 hrs with a 16 kt. Westerly , giving an apparent temp of around 7o C . Hope Maj. arrived safely . Would imagine any fog around Townsville would soon burn off , and the Sou'easterly should give him a reasonable tailwind .

Regards to all from both of us

  9. Hi Motzartmerv,Yes 1800 hrs is very good.

That is not the whole story though. At about 500 hours the engine needed a new crankcase (fretting issue). These were supplied without charge by Jabiru under warranty (I didnt buy the aircraft from them - It had about 80 hours on it when I bought it). So the engine actually has now 2300 hours from new and 1800 hours since the new crank case (which included new bearings and new rings).

This is all the the maintenance log so if the Guiness book of records want proof they can have it!

I do think I have been lucky as I have heard all the horror stories BUT I personnally have had a really good run with Jabiru products over a lot of years.

    G'Day Blueline ,

, That certainly is extraordinary service from the little Jab 2200.I assume the engine is in the J160 , but could you tell us what a bit more about the type of flying is the aircraft normally used for - eg. Short/long trips , type of oil used ,oil consumption , cruise CHT's / EGT's , etc.

  10. It gives me the ***** to hear bagging of Jabiru engines, especially from folks who are not qualified or do not have the data to support their claims. I OWN a Jabiru and it has never missed a beat. I.

Good to hear that your Jab is going well . How many hours now and what fuel do you use .?

  11. I was at William Creek a few years ago now and had a few drinks with a big, tall stretch of a guy who was working for the National Parks people in the area. He had previously been a squatter in SW Qld and had lots of hours up in Bonanzas and the like.He told me about one of his neighbours, an older guy who spent nearly his whole life on his station, only occasionally venturing to one of the nearer towns for essentials in his old A36. The neighbour also did a lot of his own mustering in a C172 and was therefore an accomplished pilot although a tad rusty on procedures in CTA.

The old guy decided he would go to Brisbane, the big smoke, for a well-earned holiday; the first in some 20 years. And, of course, he decided to fly there in the Bonanza.

    As he was getting close to his destination, and remembering he needed clearance to enter CTA for Archerfield, he gave an entry call to the tower: "A r c h e r f i e l d t o w e r --- A B C ---

    a --- B o n a n z a ---- F e r n v a l e ---- 2 5 0 0 --- I n b o u n d --- R e q u e s t --- C l e a r a n c e".

The busy, young and very proficient guy in the tower responded at a rate of 120 words a minute with clearance details.

    The old guy didn't get a word of it other than his call sign. "A r c h e r f i e l d --- t o w e r --- A B C --- S a y --- a g a i n"

Zpptttt! The young guy in the tower repeated his instructions.

    The old guy called again

    "A r c h e r f i e l d --- t o w e r --- A B C --- D o - y o u - h e a r - h o w - s l o w - I - s p e a k - ,

    -s o n n e y ?"

"Yes" replied the now somewhat perplexed young controller.

    W e l l --- T h a t ' s - h o w s l o w - I - h e a r - , - t o o !!!

I understand he got his clearance, stayed not much more than a day and headed home again. I also gather he had no trouble with the departure clearances.

    kaz

Interesting that Kaz . I had a similar experience a few months ago transitting around/below Townsville airspace . Out of courtesy , I called up the tower to advise that I was a non transponder equipped , RAAus aircraft , located then, between Bluewater Park and South Pinnacle , tracking between Restricted airspace to the West and Controlled airspace to the East , at 2500 , bound for Charters Towers via Starke Field . He then gave a 'jet jockey' reply to which I barely understood , and asked him to repeat . His second attempt was no better , and I decided I had more important things to do ( I was , after all , approaching the " dreaded Pinnacles ") . I indicated that I was having problems receiving him , again repeating my intentions , keeping me well clear of Class C airspace and Restricted airspace to the West . He asked if I could call him when I got to the Towers , and gave me his Mob. No. I did this , and he explained that all he wanted was for me to repeat , verbatim , precisely what he had said . I indicated to him that I was an old man , who talks slow and thinks the same way ( I can imagine what he thought about that , 'an old man in his airspace ' ) , and that perhaps he should consider this in future , to which he agreed , saying nobody had told him that before . Interestingly , he also indicated that he had'nt heard of Starke Field before , yet it is clearly marked on the VTC , in his area of responsibility . His manner was courteous at all times , and we parted good mates . I do seem to recall the good Major saying some weeks prior , that it was probably not necessary to call the Tower - " wise words Maj." .

  12. " .......... the propellor assembly detached ........ " , what part of the propellor assembly ? , One would have thought that the builder had some responsibility to ensure that the prop. boss was properly torqued , lock wired etc. before fitting the prop , if , in fact this was the part that "detached ". Sounds like a bit of a beat up to me .Typical of the most litigious society on earth , with it's one million lawyers encouraging everybody to sue each other .Don't think Jabiru have too much to worry about .
