  1. We have a Jabiru in the shop for a periodic inspection at the moment. We have found that the wing attachment is loose and that we can move the wing up and down.We reported the condition to Jabiru who told us that "She'll be right for ten hours or so." Another source told us that there was an allowable tolerence for movement at this joint. However, the recently published Jabiru service manual contains no statement to this effect.

    OME ,

I would caution against flying this aircraft until the reason for the movement is thoroughly investigated . The wing root fixing bolts are close tolerance bolts as are , from memory , the upper and lower strut attachment bolts . In my opinion no lateral movement in these areas is acceptable .

We await developments as we delve further into the situation.

  2. http://www.recreationalflying.com/media/jabiru-j160-flight-from-ybss-to-yblt.186/Normally this trip is about 20mins, we have condensed it down to 3.39 to not bore the pants off anyone. 001_smile.gif.2cb759f06c4678ed4757932a99c02fa0.gif

Comments are most welcome as this is our first try with the GoPro.

Next video will be outside of the aircraft.

Enjoyed that Linda . Was impressed with , among other things , the lack of vibration so assume the camera was fixed somewhere . Have been thinking about getting one of these . Still at Farri's waiting for the low cloud to lift . Did another beach landing yesterday in the Drifter .Hard holding the IPad doing 55 knots but have some good video . Will work out how to post it when we get back - I guess Utube. Later today I will once again be mesmerized by young Frank and his guitar , as I try to imitate him.

  3. Steve, Additionally this is the only passage out to the coastal route North, from the South/West of Townsville. You can go well inland which in itself has it's own difficulties, or request clearance through the Class C, but both certainly adds extra distance and time. On the Eastern side of the Pinnicles is the Townsville Class C boundry, and to the immediate West is the 'High Range' country which is often active Military restricted zones that are often active, and closely watched by the Townsville controllers for unplanned incursions. In fact years ago the military wanted to close the pinnicals VFR route for their own purposes but thanks to the efforts of the late Bill starke (Starke Field) at the time, it remains as a valuable and well used route to the coast. There are no further restrictions up the coast all the way to Cairns for the rec aviator. I used to commute north regulary through the pinnicals and occasionally you can get some low cloud in there down to about 600' but I don't believe I've ever not been able to get through.............................................................Maj...024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

    Steve ,

Maj's knowledge , comments and advice regarding the airspace in and around Townsville is extremely accurate

    G'day Brian and Linda,

Jab. Is safely tucked away in Farri's hangar. Frank and I did a beach landing yesterday afternoon in the Drifter. The beach is only a few hundred meters from Franks , and is not accessible by road. Light was quickly fading , so not much time on beach to get back before last light. Although my first time in a rag and tube, I felt very comfortable with Frank . He is an accomplished pilot , although I thought having to wipe the sand off my shoes , before getting back in was a bit over the top !! Sorry Frank , we will look after your Kia. !! Will post some pics when I learn to operate this iPad.

  5. Bob, if your coming through the Townsvile area tomorrow why don't you stop for a break. The boys are camping at Starke, I could meet you at Montpelier, or you could drop in at Bluewater Park. My Mob is 0422119051...let me know what you decide I'll see what I can arrange fuel-wise for you. I can also give you current runway info at either for you. Contact at Bluewater park is Alan Middleton on 0407356948....................Maj...

  6. The Jab engine does use an o-ring between the barrel and crankcase. Silicon is used when the spacer have been added to lower the compression on early barrels by raising the barrels 0.5mm, which was an interim fix (during 2010) while the new barrels where being designed and put into production. When you raise the barrel with shims the o-ring no longer has the same interference fit to squish it into the machined grove in the crankcase... it seals ok but its not as good without the shims. The current engine has 0.5mm longer barrels and therefore doesn't have spacers and relies entirely on the o-ring to seal between the barrel and crankcase.... Essentially Jab have addressed this issue.

    Cheers

    Vev

Thanks Vev . I wondered how long it would be before someone mentioned this.

  7. Thanks guys.I've got a Shell and BP aero card, I hope they work there!

    Ryan

I recall seeing a Shell card sign near the Visa,MasterCard etc. The latest ersa has the Shell agent mobile number. Make sure you have it? A visa card may be good as a back up

    Regards

    Bob

  8. I left Bourke for Cunnamulla at noon today and had to call the Supplier as the visa card was declined. The system apparently still has some bugs and often needs manual intervention. We eventually got fuel along with a Savannah from near Gympie. Other than this minor annoyance it is a very good set up. No interest in ASIC card .

  9. Then after the ASI was re-assembled and drying I set to work on my T&B gauge!!!! I wish I had taken photo's of the disassembled gyro and gimbals but unfortunately I was to busy concentrating on not loosing any of those itsy bitsy free rolling bearing balls!!!!This is a physical exploded diagram of a Mark 1A T&B. So many fiddly pieces!!!!

This little return spring was causing most of the grief. The whole gauge was inop prior to this

Here is a shot of a freshly installed spring, supplied by a local clock repair shop! I also cleaned out the gummed up dampeners on both the slip an turn indicator. Re-adjusted the gimble clamps and re greased the noisy noisy bearings!!! Works like a charm when connected to my vacuum cleaner!!! So know if any one asks me "Have you seen inside a Mark 1A" I can say yes, yes I have!!!!

    Er Louis ,

Those brass screws do look like they've been " attacked " before . You're not a boilermaker by any chance are you ?

  10. If you tell me Tomo that you have actually flown one, I'll...????? Stone the crows.045_beg.gif.b05ea876053438dae8f282faacd973d1.gif.Alan.

Yeah , like that Alan . And thanks Tomo for the link . My father was a flight engineer in a Cat. all those years ago . Also reminds me of the first time I flew into Longreach about 4 years ago , landing about half way down the 2000 metre strip.

  11. I got up at 0430 yesterday to go to the dawn service in Melbourne with wife and 42 y.o. son in the worst conditions imaginable . The number that attended in those appalling conditions , including very young children huddled under umbrellas , left a lasting impression . My eldest son attended the dawn service in suburban Brisbane.

  12. Wasn't airside... just my hand and the camera were... lolI see airport personnel taking photos airside all the time... surely not illegal but I stand to be corrected. Like I say... the whole ASIC security thing is absurd and the biggest joke and fraud in Australian aviation history... I carried and wore my ASIC when required... I will not be renewing mine when it is no longer required for my employment and I recommend everyone to do the same... if we let these jokers get away with this BS we are fools. IMO.

I will respect their rules when airports stop providing knives inside airport security areas to their passengers.

    Win,

I'm sure you will be a much wiser and enlightened man after spending many hours in close company with the 'legendary'

  14. On reading Bobs post, I jumped in the car, went and picked up the mail and there were 3 copies of a magazine I don`t want, but none of Sport Pilot.086_gaah.gif.afc514336d60d84c9b8d73d18c3ca02d.gifOk, So the mag. wasn`t there! Instead of reading about it, this morning I took up two guys and the 7 year old daughter of one of them. Beats reading about it!

For those like Frank , who are yet to receive their Mag. I have attached a copy of the "Story of the Month " as it appears in the April edition . Hope I am not breaching copyright here . Had to minimise the files but assume you will all be able to magnify it O.K.
