  1. Blast, 230's OPS has gone now, full needle deflection so cancelled late afternoon local flight.Next morning was able to reach thru and tap

sender unit with a spanner and it returned to normal so went for a fly, gauge showing normal 3.5 bar. New sender ordered. These VDO's appear fragile,Tacho hours go on the blink

quickly into a flight,Flip flop Microair won't monitor 2 channels now. Always something?

  2. Do these EFIS panels work out last light?I would presume trip was in the GPS as William ck-Leigh ck.And give a passive warning on known cruising speed versus

approaching last light for destination, followed by a loud WARNING WARNING.At least this poor woman would have had some control of the approaching situation.

  3. I use Aeroshell W100+ in my Gen 3 3300A and it seems fine. I change oil every 25 hours along with a new filter. Total cost is about $45.00. The oil stays clean though out and I always have to put the dipstick on a paper towel to find the level as I can't see it on the dipstick. 3 quarts of oil and no topups in 25 hours works for me. My normal cruise is at 2800-2850 rpm & 17-18 lph. The W100+ has a corrosion inhibitor which is a good idea with the Gen 3 steel bores. I see no reason to pay $18.00 a quart for some fancy oil that does the same job as the $10.00 a quart oil.

Thanks for the replies all,17-18 lph  that's very good i'm  not seeing that.Lame up here suggests straight Aeroshell 100 with Camguard added same as he uses on Cessnas etc that they routinely service.

  4. Well, since this post is about improving Jab reliability ,my 3300 is coming up to oil change time and was going to change up to Aeroshell W100 +,after using the recommended straight W100 due to the new barrels and pistons being fitted. Now knowing these oils are considered as just "hinge oil"in the "air cooled" motorcycle world (i used to own a Commando) i would be interested to hear from anyone successfully using higher grade oils in there Jabirus . If you're inclined to follow up on the link of the oil tests it's 51 pages, but he seems to have done a pretty good job of it.

  5. Just came in from Middlemount this morning,Peabody energy appear to be very good with there Rehab work,Coppabella mine tailings dumps look nearly like a natural rising ground with extensive grass and trees planted. That's what i could see from the road anyway, behind that??This country is not in the same league as down in NSW,absolutely beautiful country side being dug up there,

  6. While we're on this subject of running on 98 mogas, has anyone noticed a petrol smell which is absent using only avgas.

It's only present on opening the door of the 230 in the morning and quickly disappears.Have removed the header tank under the seat and fitted fuel proof  (yellow) thread tape

and fitted new red plastic fuel lines, can't feel any wetness on any of the fuel lines but this fuel smell is persistently there every morning.

  7. I presume Jab's new allow barrels will cool down much faster than the old steel ones.

Bit of a joke really,as the engine they based the Jabiru on,the KFM had Alloy cylinders ,actually the cyl and head were one piece too.And all these Jabiru high temps probably would never had occurred.I guess the steel cyls were added due to economies.

  8. Just out of interest coinz - did you find a L2 anywhere near Merredin - Thanks

Yes bandit, new cyls (alloy) and strip and paint being done over there.Original steel Cyls (248 hours) were rusted, cleaned up ok but turned out to be pitted.colin

  9. Yes it was the J230 at Narembeen, part of a deceased estate tidy up.Got it for $12k as it needs a respray and yes the cyls will come off for a check. It's being taken care of right now.As far as i know it was in the hanger for 3 years untouched.Having no experience with Jabs one of the things i was surprised at was how cool the wings remained even when we had taken it out of the hanger into the direct WA sun for a few hours,i expected them to be really hot but they were not. Thanks to those who phoned with advice,

    cheers

  10. Bex,i went through Ross racing pistons in the US,others had been using them and they were recommended. They phoned me back and discussed the drawings i had sent them,so i ordered a set.The machine work ,has to be seen, lightening done on inside crown too.

I have to agree these engines appear to be unstressed,2 weeks ago i stood not 20 meters from a jabiru leaving the ground on takeoff,(Palmira) delightfully quite engine,so unstressed.Pistons shouldn't be breaking up in this day and age,i take workers out to mines, gensets (Perkins) run 50,000 hours + with no more than oil changes, because they're designed correctly.

    cheers
