  1. Any sudden rush of cold air accompanied by loud noise is startling to say the least. Never flew with a pop up canopy, but have had a Bonanza door come open in flight.

had the door on a C185 come open at about 100ft on final once, half sh1t myself, but it didn't effect the aircraft so I just left it open (it was a jump door although I wasn't doing jump ops)

  2. The SportStar is very benign when this happens. It doesn't open very far and it just flies. Of course you won't be able to close it.It happened in mine (before I owned it) without incident and the dealer also told me when he went for his training at the factory, they did it to him on purpose to demonstrate what a non-event it is.

Different design, different outcome, I guess...

What sportstar have you got Bas, I did some time in 4010 a few years ago

  3. something else I was thinking about regarding "flying with out airspeed", I had read somewhere about flying below the posted stall airspeed ,so I went up in a tecnam to try it out , ended up with a balancing act between the throttle and the stick position and managed to get it holding height and indicating around 20kias, I know the pitot wouldn't have been getting the right airflow but it was a good exercise in controlling the stall with power and the stall stick position ,went up in a savvanah recently and had a play around ,ended up with the ASI reading nothing, which of course doesn't mean we had none (airspeed) but we were really going slow, all good fun and I think you can learn a lot more about your aircraft at the slow draggy end of the envelope!

    Mat

and something I noticed in the Savvanah is it dropped the left wing in a S and L stall everytime, is that standard for them?

  4. My first flight in an RAA aircraft I noticed some white plugs on the inside of the canopy, I had a GFPT but bugger all hours, we did one circuit in the golf and on the second one the FI says "are you flying the attitude", and promptly sticks a white plug over the ASI. After a couple of laps I had the airspeed nailed on 60 knots every time , apart from the confidence boost I've never had a problem with "eyes outside" , although I've found it hard to find a reference point in pusher aircraft like the Seeker or drifters I reckon with enough hours in them you get the feel for them

    Cheers mat

  5. If I can get a plane from Moorabbin I'll be there. As I tell the wife, driving is for bums and those whose planes have broken down.I've got your number, I'll call you if I make it there.

cool, I'm not sure what I'm going in at the moment,,,,last choice(and the cheapest) is a Mitsubitshi Triton,,,,,

  6. Dex these yanks were talking about stepping on the ground behind the nose, just a way to not get disoriented, especially inverted when the roll and yaw are opposite

  7. Matt! There are only two answers - one is correct, one is incorrect. You know which is the correct answer don't you?

yeh I reckon it would be the same inverted, if you yaw left then right rudder will stop the yaw so as it crosses over to inverted the it yaws the opposite way so if you step on the ground behind the nose,,,,,maybe?

and darren that method is good for some types but not all, I've read it works on the Pitts, but not everything across the board.

  8. I've just been on a USA forum and they had a post about crossover spins, pretty interesting ,but something I had never heard before was to "step" on the ground behind the nose, any one been taught this way of recognizing the spin direction, and does it work inverted as well?

  9. I'm heading for Natfly this year, I went to the first one but missed last year, interested to hear of who else is going .

I'm not sure what I'll be in ,I was hoping to have mine going but I think I'll be pushing it a bit, I have a couple of choices, the favorite is a Eurofox ,but I think the owner is going in that , there's also a Savannah down here, and there's a couple of Decathalons around the place as well,

    cheers Mat

  10. Thanks for all you are doing Bas...I still think there are some questions regarding the previous false start in updating the website... as Bas says "when confronted with someone who clearly knows what they are talking about, understands the needs and explains well how to meet them" it is easy to go for it...

My question (and this is more for the returned board members rather than the newly elected)... when confronted with someone who clearly doesn't know what they are talking about, doesn't understand the needs and doesn't explain well how to meet them why were they so keen to go for it... despite the fact that Bas and other members had offered to provide just what is now being provided and obviously do know what they are talking about... Who made that decision and why? How much did it cost the organization and what are the chances of recuperating it?

Does Ra-Aus know how these mistakes were made, understand what led to it etc etc because if it doesn't it will not have a hope in hell of avoiding the same scenario in future...

I won't comment on the money side of this ,but, I went through four different website "expert" before I got my site up and running, not sure if it's common for that industry but I found a lot of the people I dealt with were "highly talented " but low on real world business skills,,had them asking for money on unfinished work (I had paid a big deposit with one guy) ,had one present a draft of a home page, I wanted a couple of minor changes, never heard from them again. The thing that struck me was I never asked for a firm price, I had an idea what it should cost but wasn't concerned with the money as much as the result, if one of my customers came to me with that attitude he'd get a rip snorter of a job .

I have empathy for the RAA on the website woes, like I wrote I won't comment on the money stuff , but I can fully understand having trouble getting something going on line, don't know you Bas but I've seen the draft and it looks nice,

    cheers Mat

http://widebaymotorbodies.com.au/, here's a link to my website (not for advertising I don't need any more work) just to show the end result which I must say has worked extremely well

  11. I was going through some old slides to scan into digital, and came across this photo of VH-ULA, a Stits Flut-R-Bug, According to the link below, "This machine is credited with starting post war amateur-built aviation in Australia."I thought this might be of interest, or even trigger a few memories.

geez mate your pretty quick ,,was having a look through your pics and you've got the eurofox 7772 pics already,,,it hasn't been here that long,,I've been putting a few hours on it ,have you flown it at all yet, it's a real treat!

  12. It's a very common theme, Hervey bay went through a lot of crap recently with the council trying a user pays system,, problem was the RPT guys were getting all the fruit (and any questions of how much $$$ the big guys were paying was met with stony silence) and the private guys were getting zilch, the aeroclub got real active and basically went through the councils rulebook and then told them what they could and couldn't do ,according to there own rules, end result the council got a bit more willing to sit down and talk ,when we move on there seem to be a happy truce,,,,,might pay the Cessnock aeroclub (?) to give the YHBA guys a call !

  13. One of my neighbours in Iowa put signs all round his property that said, "Tresspassers will be shot. Survivors will be prosecuted." Trouble was; Everybody in the district knew ol' Doc Bradley wasn't joking...

My Dad was up until a couple of months ago ,living in detroit,,he reckons that you never wound a burglar in the front yard, shoot em good and proper and drag the body through the front door, "no problems" !

He was telling me about a jack theft gone wrong ,the thief breaks into the house and gives the owner a hiding and steals the car out of the garage ,the old guy comes to ,grabs his handgun and runs out the front in time to pump a few rounds into the car, the bad guy jumps out and makes a run for it with the guy chasing him ,still shooting, a ricochet kills another person in their kitchen ! The story so far ,,they're trying to pin the thief for causeing the death as well as the other crimes,,,,,,Dad says if he'd just knock the bugger over in the first place it would have been a lot simpler, fact is the thief will probably sue the car owner for his car not being bullet proof ,so he had to leg it which caused the other events!
