  1. You obviously don't know about the class action based out of Texas, USA for 7 fatalities behind their engines. The lawyers were doing the rounds at Oshkosh earlier this year basically coming up in saying.... "We are starting a class action against the said engine manufacturer on behalf of families with a number of fatalities in the US... do you know of any said engine accidents that have contributed towards loss, injury or death" these are as close to the exact words as I can remember. I first heard of this about two years ago on the Internet but this year they were actively sourcing information first-hand information at Oshkosh. The way I see it, LSA manufacturers in Europe have to comply with not only ASTM regulations but also with the regulations of their local CAA and this includes building the aircraft to a known standard which includes accepted aviation practices otherwise they lose their production licence.

If I wanted to start up manufacturing aircraft in Australia myself I simply claim that I meet the ASTM standards without any local CAA involvement. It would require a CASA appointed inspector to come and have a look at my facility and that my paperwork trail ensuring that I was complying with the accepted ASTM standards. The big problem with the standards is they are based around paperwork rather than manufacturing standards and I see this happening everywhere! Some inspectors couldn't care less if the plane was airworthy or otherwise all they are interested in is if the paperwork is correct!

All of this is my opinion only.

as with most government dept ,it all comes down to paper work,,,,,, common sense, reality, best practices ,proven engineering all mean nothing if the pencil d1ck behind the desk is on a power trip ,fact is they don't actually know what is right, just what paperwork needs to be filled out. Try getting the same answer from three different people in ### transport on the same day,for the same question, hasn't been done yet and I doubt it ever will ,,,,I'm speaking of the automotive industry ,,,,,in another country,,,,,we don't have that problem here with the wonderful folks at DoTARS ,,,,,,and the state depts, god bless em!

  2. there's a culture in Oz that we cut down the tall poppy, sometimes this backfires on us when things like this happen, I have had a look over the morgan aircraft at a few flyins and was pretty unimpressed, I thought they were just rough, I have a mate who does builder assistance with RV's and the quality is worlds apart. I stayed out of a lot of the discussions on these and plenty of other aircraft as I didn't want to be seen to "bag" another Ozzie trying to make a go of it, I still resist really letting fly cause there is a lot of people who have bought these aircraft in good faith and I'd hate to see them done wrong. Hopefully Morgans can move on ,but i would be a liar to say I'd fly in one ,

  3. The pilots problems are one thing, the issues with the factory built aircraft are real scary, the engineers I use for automotive stuff would laugh me out of the business if I presented a vehicle with zip ties holding the fuel system together, let alone the rivets , the joy stick, the brake lines, and what else , I wonder if the whole lot will be inspected for shoddy practices?

  4. Good stuff - what did you do in it?

just turns and stalls, with full flap the adverse yaw is incredible, it's definatly a rudder aircraft ,so touchy I had heaps of drama keeping it in balance.Actually found it easier to do balanced steep turns than 30degturns, Craig reckons it will take a bit to get used to .It will do the most aggressive side slip ,1500fpm desent, quicker than stallling it :) . Did a passable 3 pointer in pretty gusty crosswind (90 deg to the strip) going out again this weekend to do some circuits. Craig and I fill it up pretty much, not a lot of room to breathe! very nicely built airplane though.

  5. Hi all, went up in a Eurofox taildragger on the weekend, great fun but man that rudder does not want to be ignored, with full flap the adverse yaw is something to be experienced, looking forward to putting a few more hour in it over the next few weeks!

  6. Drumroll please......"Hello".

Having just signed up to TAA, I'm the editor of Australian Business Traveller (www.AusBT.com.au) but I promise not to spam - just add the odd link to any story as relevant and generally share anything as I can that's germane to TAA members.

welcome, DJ, are you a pilot mate? you'll enjoy the forum whether your a flyer or an aircraft enthusiast

  7. Thanks for the link, very interesting. I'll have to have a look for the Bunyip field next time I'm out that way, was over Berwick on Saturday and was having a look around for the airport, now closed. Same as Pakenham, you can see where it was but the houses built through the middle of the runway kinda ruin it for aircraft!!

just looking at the airport finder, used to be an airfield at Plenty, makes me wonder just how many airfields have disappeared over the years

  8. I work in mining - construction in Gladstone but have a property in the sunshine coast. My 10 hour ordeal driving back & forth on the atrocious h/way & covert speed cameras promted me to the realization that it may be feesable to fly by light aircraft as there is no direct commercial flight & QANTAS has regained it's preditory monopoly now stategic had to pull out..So why not learn to fly ? ( had done lessons years ago ) and get the hours up flying home ?..makes sense i thought, until a quick search revealed NO flight training in Gladstone ! So there's an opening for someone who may see the potential considering the $$ people make around here.. Does anyone want to get some hours up plus costs & fly me to the sunny coast & back ?..Cheers

Maybe have a look at bundaberg/childers or Maryborough, a mate of mine instructs at YMYB and another guy I know is at Childers, Russell Middleton is the YMYB FI and is a top bloke ,they're using GS700 Ibis aircraft , not sure about YBUD but they knock up Jabirus there , I'd guess they'd have some training units on the field. If your going GA there's a school at Hervey Bay as well .

    good luck Mat
