SAAA Membership is $270 so that component similar to RAAus ; just the annual aircraft is not required with SAAA and no 3rd party insurance so that should be considered as well.  Both orgs have their pros and cons.

    No Annual Inspection??

Jabiru’s email in it entirety as sent to me:

If the aircraft is registered as experimental (i.e. 19-rego or VH- experimental), then the approval process is up to you.

If the aircraft is registered under the  ASTM LSA (i.e. 24-rego) then the aircraft has to remain standard (500 x 6 nose and mains). Under ASTM there is no STC ruling, it is a manufactures approval.

FYI: the font nose wheel yoke will not accommodate any larger tyre than 500 x 6 due to clearance withing the yoke ID dimensions. Also, if the tyre size is increased, it will put more loading on the main gear legs and fuse attachment point and the braking capacity will be reduced. This is something that we have not load tested or approved.

Jabiru advertised the larger tyres on their website months ago.

    They sold them to me.

    They have approved them.

It will be quite a while before RAA get those privileges for RPC holders.  In the meantime,  many will go VH for lower cost and more privileges.

Maybe, but the reason many went from GA to RAA was due to the onerous expensive medical requirements for GA, and the ageing GAA fleet

Also, if your flying school is in controlled airspace, you can learn RA-Aus there.

Correct, but the problem is, once you get your RAA Cert, you CANT THEN FLY IN controlled airspace unless you have a CASA licence and medical!

This topic has been discussed over and over and is why RAA is working on controlled airspace privilages for RAA Cert holders

I recently ordered and paid for 3 items from an Australian owend online aviation shop.

The following day I received an email saying they could no longer source 2 of the items and the third item had increased in price and I would have to pay more than the advertised and invoiced price. They also offered a full refund, which I accepted and provided payment details.

7 weeks later and several emails later, I haven't received my refund and they no longer answer my emails or return my phone calls.

I won't name the shop just yet, as I'm still trying to work it out with them.

I paid by EFT as I've dealt with them before and thought they were trustworthy, should have paid by credit card in hindsight.

It's the first time I've been dudded by an online shop.

    Buyer beware.

All my items online cone from the USA.

The freight cost is horendous but at least the goods arrive and come with a tracking number.

I have hardly flown since Covid started........ only a few hours.

If I wanted to get back into an aircraft I would need a couple of hours refresh with an instructor even though I'm still current with all requirements.

I have made the decision to take a break from flying for the following reasons:

To hire an aircraft I have to pay membership of my local flying club.

Hire rates have increased making it a very expensive past time.

I now require an ASSICS card to use the airport ( Bendigo )

The airport has gone from a small country airport to having  regular Quantas link flights and all the BS that goes with it.

They now charge landing fees and so do most of the nearby airports that I used to fly to (Echuca, Kyneton, Shepperton.........etc.

I have found other interests during Covid that are far cheaper and less hassle.

I still want to retain my RAA Pilot Certificate so I could return to flying if I change my mind in the future.

What I need to know is can I keep my licence without a required BFR, and if so how long do I have before my licence would be canceled.

    thanks in advance Butch.

A friend of mine was in a similar situation with a lapsed BFR.

He changed his RAA membership to a NON FLYING member and was able to keep his Pilot Cert.

Call RAA to confirm your situation, I am sure they want to keep you on their books.

Common issue with the Microair..they wander off frequency internally..the VCO inside is crap....the radio has been a very bad one..just badly designed

I refused to look at them after being bitten so many times...repair retune them...3 to 6 months later same issues

And thats exactly why i chucked out my Microair 2 years ago and replaced it with a Trig VHF com.

Thanks Roscoe - not so familiar with Jabs, to actually visualise a 170D but know the local Jabs ?? have very small wheels (tyres) so I assume that they need a pretty high inflation pressure to perform satisfactorily.

Yeah those local Jabs you refer to are the early smaller models which have smaller tyres and operate mainly from grass.

The 160, 170 and 230 Jabs have the larger tyres with higher pressures.

Just noticed on a post on Facebook about a 24 rego Tecnam landing at Gold Coast, I asked the question and was told they had a transponder and submitted a flight plan and unless you have CTA experience it should not be done , is this legal , Greg

If the Pilot has a PPL or higher and casa Medical and the airplane has radio and transponder then ok

    CTA experience is assumed.

Ray Tolhurst who owns/ed Wedgetail is/was a member of this site. He took over the support of Morgan Aircraft when Garry Morgan returned to NZ. I haven't heard anything from him for ages. The last post he made was 30 August 2020.

I saw Ray at Camden airport a few days ago. There is also a Sign on his Hangar WEDGETAIL AIRCRAFT

Thanks Nev - do you have a favourite source?

Buy them from Jabiru, support local Industry.

And Jabiru will supply you with an Invoice which is handy and may be useful for a warranty claim.

Same day shipping and advice if required.

I need a new compass. Want to get a vertical card compass. How does the Beijing instrument stack up against the Precision compass? I know one is TSO’d and the other not, but more interested in how they compare in real life useage. Thanks

You will find the vertical Card type much easier to read in any sort if turbulence. Downside is the cost to purchase and install.

I have always wanted a vertical card compass but cant justify the cost when thinking about the amount of time actually LOOKING at the compass.

My compass is located at the top of the winsdshield and very difficult to read in any sort of glare.
