  1. I'm considering buying an aircraft with 100HP, 912 UL engine. The Rotax airbox has been removed & replaced with two separate air cleaner type fittings.

I've read that the Rotax needs its specifically designed airbox, without it, the engine won't develop full HP.

Can anyone either confirm or rubbish this theory? Thanks

  2. Hi Neil,

I had to look up Deddick Valley, I'd heard of it, a long way from me by road, 4-4.5 hours by road, maybe 1 hour by air, across some serious tiger country.

Yes, it would be good to talk to your Foxbat friend. I've been a bit put off by the cockpit ergonomics of the A22. I've not flown one, I've had 1.5 hrs on the A32 with the Y stick, that was OK, seemed to have more adverse yaw than some I've flown.

I didn't realise the Sav agent was in Bendigo, their website is difficult to navigate & only has a phone number. A real pity as I was in Bendigo recently.

I will be at both AirVenture & AusFly, I've paid for accommodation at both places. I would welcome the chance to have a talk with you. My email is [email protected].

Did you build your Sav or is it a factory job?

    Regards,

    Peter

  3. Foxbat is expensive but the A22 most seem to like to fly..some people report they dont like the way the Vixen handles compared to the A22. The Savannah is better in some respects to the 701. The 701 has a few issues that you have to get used to where the Savannah is very docile and doesnt tend to bite you unless you are really stupid...which is why you would have to get a Darwin award to stall one in

The 701 upside down aerofoil tailplane makes it drop out of the sky if your not careful as its all good and then its nothing also the gap in the middle of the wings does create less lift. I know a 701 driver that got rid of his std tailplane and put a std savannah one on and filled the gap in the wing over the cabin and said it flew much better. He had been flying it for many years as a std 701 then modified it in the last 5 years or so and he said it much improved the handling of it.

I've been looking at the Zenith 750 STOL, which also has the horizontal stabiliser 'upside down'. I was wondering why other makes don't do this, if it's such a good idea. I see the 750 Cruzer has a 'normal' horizontal stabiliser, as does the 750 Special Duty model. Thanks for the input.

  4. If your building the Skyranger Nynja would be worth a look. I'm rapt in mine and no painted needed. Cheers

I've looked at the Skyranger website, the Nynja is interesting, I'm hoping I can find one to look at. I'll be at both Parkes & Narromine shows in a few months, I hope I'll find a Nynja amongst the fly in aircraft at these shows.

  5. I posted on 11 JAN 18 that, in my search for TL 3000 Sirius owners, I found 4 happy & 1 unhappy. I've had feedback that some members of this discussion group have focused more on the one 'unhappy' comment, rather than the four 'happy'.

Since the original post, I've now been in contact with eight owners, seven of whom are happy. The detailed opinions & experiences of the 'happy' owners has been overwhelmingly positive and I'm seriously considering buying one.

Have a look on the large number of Facebook sites on TL Ultralight for more info.

Incidentally, I heard that they are changing the company name to TL Aviation.

I'm happy to chat about what I've learnt & interested to talk to any other owners I haven't yet found.

  6. I PURCHAASED THIS AT AN ESTATE SALE AND DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT IT IS. THERE ARE NO MARKINGS EXCEPT WHAT IS ON THE PANEL. THANKS

It's probably a GSAP (Gunsight aiming point) but a strange one, given the height, speed settings on the face of it. In the days of Sabres, Mirages, Macchis etc, a similar device was mounted on the top of the panel. The 'Pipper', the aiming point, was shown, via a collimator onto the glass, providing the pilot with the lead necessary for the relative speeds & angles between the combatants. It was an early form of HUD (head up display). The ones I'm familiar with were gyro controlled & the base unit was much thicker than the one shown, as the gyro was contained in the panel mounted device.

Other comments about gunship use might make sense in view of the speed & altitude setting controls, somewhat slower than the Sabres & Mirages of old.

  7. Hi. I own a Sirius in New Zealand. Keen to connect with other owners and very happy to talk about my great machine

Since my first message I've now found 4 owners, 3 happy, 1 very unhappy, plus yourself. Would like to phone you to ask you some questions, if you've the time & inclination. Peter

  8. In answer to petercoota's question (above):Aviation ID at Merimbula airport is one of the private outfits that are authorised to handle ASICs and AVIDs for the government.

Yes, they certainly deal with individuals. The process now is really cumbersome (not their fault). There needs to be a face-to-face element so it can't be concluded on line. But I understand you can arrange to front up, at some stage in the process, to an authorised person close to where you live anywhere in Oz. Anyway, I decided, instead, to take a road trip down to the south coast and get it all done on the spot. They took the picture. They sighted the documents etc. and so they can just send it to me when it's done. It helped that mine was a renewal and they already had most of my information - which included all the details of every place I'd lived over the past X-many years, etc. etc.

Even if you go visit them (it's at the airport so you could fly in!) they expect you to have already filled in the form online. (I hadn't so they allowed me to hand write it there. But they already had much of my info.)

You can find out more info on their website:

Aviation ID Australia | Professional ASIC Distribution Centre

And you can call them to discuss: +61 2 6495 2881

It's an awful process but the people at Aviation ID are nice to deal with, at least.

(Good that at least someone is getting actual benefit from this absurd Yes Minister scenario.)

Thanks for the info on Merimbula, a way better way to deal with a renewal than the alternatives, much appreciated !!

    • Caution 1
  9. Yes, I was shocked to discover that now we need to produce a birth certificate as well as all the other stuff! After turning the house upside down I finally found mine. And to simplify and speed up the process I decided to drive down to Merimbula to get the formalities out of the way as soon as possible. Typical excessive (and ineffective) bullying from the security/industrial complex!!

Who's the contact at Merimbula? I understand that that's where the ASIC processing place is, I haven't been able to find out where they are, address, if they deal with individual applications or just do bulk processing. Any info would be appreciated...Thanks

  10. Another couple of location suggestions:Moruya and Cootamundra.

    • Both of these are part way between Melbourne and Sydney, attempting to be reasonable for many people.

    • Have 2 runways so that there are no issues with crosswinds

    • For Moruya there is camping just across the fence and access to the beach for the non-flyers. Cootamundra could have camping in the grassed area at the south east corner as you enter the airport by road.

    • Morouya town is a little distance away but Cootamundra is a 15 minute walk.

    • Neither require an ASIC (I think but need to check to be sure)

REX flys into Moruya so that will be a 'secure' airport!

thanks for that, as usual, obvious when someone else points it out!

  12. Still looking for any owners of TL 3000 Sirius aircraft in Australia. If you know of any please let me know.Regards, John.

John, I'm interested in buying a TL 3000 & want to contact owners to discuss their experiences. With the RAA register down, I've only managed to find one owner at Deniliquin.

Would you like to share any info we collect?

If you'd like to keep in touch, let me know how to do that off line, I'm new to this board & can't figure out how to do a private message.

  13. Hello All, I've been following this site for a while & have found it very helpful. I live in Mallacoota (far east victoria) & am looking for full time training as my location makes part time/weekend training impractical. The eastern part of vic doesn't seem to have much to offer & the southern part of NSW appears to lack full time trainers. Apart from me having to travel to far northern NSW or Qld, can anyone suggest full time training operations that they've been happy with in the middle/southern parts of NSW?

I've done 30 hours of glider training in the last 6 months & now want to get a RAA certificate.

    Thanks
