Doug. that radial-engined 912 GA55 is no more. About 5 years ago after only about 17 hours logged from commissioning with the radial, it fell on it's nose on take-off and was written off. I bought the wreck for the engine (subsequently zero-timed by Rotec and now powering a Fisher Celebrity bi-plane) and still have the remainder of the dis-assembled Lightwing in my hangar. I'll never get around to rebuilding it but it's too good to part out so I keep tripping over and cursing it. -
Any gurus out there who have used (or know of an instance where) a Suzuki G10T turboed car engine that's been converted for experimental Cat 19 RAA aircraft use? Apparently the ICP Savannah VG was/is offered with that power-plant option from the factory. Wanting to establish if it could suit a Pietenpol. Any leads would be gratefully received. Tks n rgds.

Anybody have or know of a Hirth G40-264 Reduction Gearbox that's unemployed? Alternatively, can anyone advise the contact details of the recently assigned Hirth agent in Oz?

A very interesting watch FT. Wish they had specified the dating of the report. By the hair styles and the flared trousers I'd guess early/mid 70's? -
Get those fat tyres off it and skinny down to yer daks and you stand a good chance of getting it into (but not out of) ground effect.:cheezy grin:Well done Flyer - good to see it looking like an aircraft again. cheersMy whing ding did same couple months ago. It had a retainer but somehow one screw came out and starter cord and rubber handle went into prop. Now have to make new prop (you can just make out the handle in its retainer behind my left arm/shoulder -
Whitworths Marine & Leisure (www.whitworths.com.au) sell both the in-line filters (brand??) and 'pack-of-three' replacement filters. Go to their on-line catalogue to ensure that what they have is what you want.I have a glass inline fuel filter which I bought from aircraftspruce and think by memory it was a Tempo brand. I need to change the filter and the rubbers seals rather than buy a new unit, anyone know where I can get these parts from, cheers -
Crush plate in the post to you this morning. cheersOK m8 -
Doug, have been busier than two cut cats over the Easter break and am heading for the bush this morn so will get the crush plate in the mail to you on Monday next. cheersSee P.M. Bob, Thanks JG3 for your confirmation. -
Found the crush plate but don't have an 'A' box to compare flange specs. Plate dimensions are: PCD of 6ea X 9mm ID bolt holes is 37.5mm and PCD for 6ea X 6.7mm is the same. Od of crush plate is 100mm. I'd reckon the g/box prop flange will be the same for 447 thr 503 range but will await your confirmation that this one will fit before putting it in a postal bag. Send us your mailing address with your confirmation/denial. cheers bobRiley, just found out that I have a type A gearbox with adapter plate, not type B I hope the crush plates are the same. Cheers. -
I'm pretty sure I'll have a spare R503 crush plate up at the hangar but won't be on site till the w/end. Will check with you then and if I have and you still need I'll get in the post to you. cheersI'm currently re-assembling my Rotax 503 and will need a propeller crush plate and correct bolts to fit my prop. Anyone one have such items they can spare or are willing to sell at the lowest price possible. I'm not a tight ass but cash is in short supply at the moment. My engine has a type 'B' gear-box fitted so the bolt pcd is 75 mm. PM me if you can help. Cheers.Edit, deleted nuts, flange is tapped so not needed. -
jasmreid. With your suggestion that he write on the ice with snow in the northern hemisphere in early March, you obviously have no idea of snow/ice conditions in Michigan in late winter. The ice will be three foot thick and the snow even deeper! I suggest Sandeky5 and his girlfriend live in sin for now and he formally proposes when the wheat crops are in full bloom.Welcome to the forum. If the ice doesn't have snow on it maybe you could write it with snow? One hell of a lot of work though unless you have some sort of machine to help you? My son took his prospective wife up in a hot air balloon. But I think he simply had the ring with him and the sunset - nothing on the ground. Good luck! -
The miscreant was identified in the article as the 'leading hand' of the crew. So if this was a case of lack of training, him being the leading hand, what does that say for the efficiency/effectiveness of the rest of the crew? At some time in our work lives, we have all done something totally inexplicable which, had it broken another way, could have had horrid results. I'd reckon this guy just had a temporary brain fade which he'll pay for for the rest of his working career (if he has one with Jetstar). Each and every work accessory fastened to one wrist/arm????? I don't think so.That's a straight-out lack of training, placing a clipboard in a position where it can be ingested into the engine. That should be a basic level of training - you never put any object you're carrying, down, without retrieving it, before you move on.Maybe they need wristbands attached to the clipboards to help their memory functioning?

You managed to sell your ex-wife?? My experience was the exact opposite. At the time, I would have been more than happy to turn her into a cash cow rather than just a great-expense single cow.You followed her in the circuit? You obviously know your place....hehehe:oh yeah: My ex wife whom I sold many years ago never had any interest in aviation, just the money I made from it!! -
Very definately. Some of the original design/production staff of the Thruster were participants in these forums some years back. I believe I'm correct in stating that, post-Horscot report, the Thruster Gemini was the first AUF training aircraft to be certified by CASA, closely followed by the Drifter. Farri, help me on this.I just did the same. It's an entertaining read. In the book he says the Thruster is an Australian design, but these days they seem to be made by Thruster Airservices in the UK, who also claim the design - or the design of the T600 Sprint anyway. Is the Thruster an Australian design? Just curious.rgmwa -
Be advised that my solicitor and the bailiff will be in contact with you directly (however, I am prepared to share much of your beer with them to have the theft charges dropped). Good news on the problem resolution but I still reckon a set of ear plugs would have been cheaper. The problem is resolved. It was the starter. I run a B box so the starter is at the back. The sound never occured on the ground which made it hard to diagnose but I am lucky to have two of everything so subbing the parts out when suspected is the best way. I considered having someone else pilot it for me while I hung off the boom with the stethoscope but changed my mind. Thanks to everyone who commented... and Riley thanks for your kind offer... and loan of your starter, weather you know you've loaned it or not- 1

Continuing the thread drift w/ apologies. It were'nt a Brooklands but a '37 6-cyl dual cockpit Riley special that I scratch-built from a rotten chassis/running gear that I pulled from under a bananna plant whilst working in Singapore in the late '80s. About 20 years ago in Perth when I got back into flying, vintage cars took a hind seat and I hardly drove it much so eventually sold it to a chap in Melbourne and bought the Aeronca Champ with the proceeds (and have had 10 times more fun out of the Champ!). cheersTell me about it Riley. If you drive a Riley Brooklands as in your avitar, i'm envious (just a bit before my time, but only just) I once owned an Alvis TD21. Wish I owned it now, it might make my pension stretch a bit further with or without the masking tape, as would the Aston Martin DB2-4 which I sold after a week of owning it to make a mammoth 120 quid profit at the time. Forsight would have been a wonderful thing.Rgds Planey
Sorry guys! enough of the thread drift.

Hush you mouf P.D. You hitting at my happiness area! Also, you didn't mention reclaiming used masking tape - us old farts do a bit of that too.Thought Nightmare was only a young-un, so he may not be interested in restoring old pram's and bikes, and false teeth etc during the week:cheezy grin:- 1

Hi allI fly a Thruster TST with a 582 Blue on it. It runs like a dream, climbs well and is as reliable as you could wish for.
It has been making a tinny noise at 5800rpm in the air at 50 to 55 kias for the past 5 hrs. I have had second opinion that it is from the engine and have shaken the airframe frkm many different points to try to establish the noise.
I have swapped the exhaust and springs, checked many torques and other bits and pieces.
Just throw your suggestions at me so I can add to my list.
I have another engine to put on but I dont want to be beaten here :-)
Thanks
Xy
Piglet, I think, after 5 frustrating hours of sleuthing with no success you'd be wise to accept defeat, give 'Thrustering' away and tow the TST across the taxiway and dump it in front of my hangar. I won't invoice you for eliminating this ancient and horrid abomination from your trials & tribulations. Just as well you have mates who are prepared to look after you.

Makes our ASIC card requirements look pretty dumb, eh whot? It’s good that regular people can still do this after the events of 17 years ago. Nice way to sight see all those places without the crowds.- 4

I believe flight training at Serpentine was suspended some time back. I'm also in Darlington and fly off Bindoon Airfield where RAA Pilot Certificate training (Jabiru & Taylorcraft) is available on weekends. PM me if you want more info. cheers RileyHi Kaz,Asante! Actually Darlington in WA... so Sydney also an issue for me. I believe the main flying club for recreation is Serpentine - but would love to make contact with anyone who flys out of Northam???Yup - the folks in southern ZA are doing it tough!

On the recommendation of the late Tony Hayes, I borrowed a copy of Propeller Head about 15 years ago, enjoyed it immensly (kinda like 'Zen & the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'). and, afterwards tried everywhere to obtain a copy but with no luck.. Good fortune smiled on me again whilst in an Op Shop in NZ last year where I picked up an uncirculated edition for $2.00! I've written it's ultimate disposal into my will! cheersI've just started reading Propellerhead by Antony Woodward, after hearing about it on this forum. It's a good read so far, and I'd never heard the title or author before. It got me wondering, what other good aviation books are out there?- 1

Had a similar instance when I first flew the Aeronca Champ. With lack of familiarity, just prior to flare, backed off on the throttle a bit and the C85 quit on me. By the time I'd worked out which way my a.s was pointing, the little aircraft had landed itself. Ya never get to the end of the learning curve.I was flying in a friends newly acquired Luscombe. It had a C65. He asked me to pull throttle and stall. I did. The engine stopped! Don- 2

Freight Forwarding advice fm USA
in AUS/NZ General Discussion
Posted
Off B'Stormers, I have located at a reasonable price, an inventory of 'specialist-prepared' engine parts to suit an experimental homebuilt project and am now looking for advice as to how to get it to OZ at a price I can live with. I'm aware that there are businesses in the US who offer pick-up, crating, export documentation & shipping and would like contact from anybody here in Aust who have recently had a successful transaction in this regard. Along with the stringent AQUIS packing materials requirements, who can school me on what they were required to do and what firm (in or around Atlanta, Georgia) that I might utilize to get best results. 'Boxed-up' components would approx equate to the size of two cartons of beer and would weigh approx 70kg. FedEx scares me so airfreight is out of the question and speed of shipping is not of the essence. All suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance. Riley
