The jabiru climb speed may also be about keeping the engine cool.

Here is an example of how the back of the drag curve slow approach can go wrong. Lot of risk for no reward.

There was no discernible sink rate with this slow approach, lots of stol videos I have seen show a high rate of sink to come in over obstacles like trees, high terrain, that they seem to be able to arrest quickly at the flare (maybe with a quick burst of power.

as a kid I watched an ultralight above a row of trees near cressy in Tasmania, not moving forward in the wind, thought it was cool at the time. Later on when I first started flying I realised how potentially dangerous it was.

  2. My Bushbaby is in MPH too, was built and first registered in South Africa. I will try to get another when I am finally able to use it again.

Garmin is good for knots and ipad also as a back up for checking progress. Long as you know the right speeds it is fine. cessnas hand book is all in MPH and dial in Knts, it is a pain reading pencil scribbles next to all figures.

  3. Advice needed for a short notice trip I may have to take.

are there any members who live in the Yass area , or my intended track, who could give me a bit of knowledge on area weather and what’s expected by Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week. ( also any properties near there with strips suitable for a bush 182 with big wheels). My trip is for compassionate reasons, only overnight, maybe 2 at most if weather no good to go. I would be travelling from Tamworth probably tracking over Mudgee, Cowra and onto Yass if I can get permission to land at Jindalee, otherwise need to find nearest centre with transport.

I will be checking everything available, but as we all know, when are forecast’s completely right. Local knowledge is always valuable.
    thanks in advance.

I wish they did not take interest in aircraft … this was 3 weeks ago at home.  The delightful chaps who did this also went through the entire house and we have a collection of 23 swasrikas with nice SS insignia through the lounge room and kitchen less pleasant words through the bathroom and the bedrooms also have new decorations. The fact that the little shits are the 11yo and his mate from over the road is making it quite uncomfortable … they are not getting off lightly … and it’s not cheap to fix an entire house including furniture.

Grab the little sh#ts and flog them. It’s the best way to teach them. This soft nanny state way of dealing with them never works. Little pricks become car thieves and crims next. They might have a little chance of straighten out if they remember what happened when they screwed up last time. You would be doing them a favour.

  5. Mike from Mojogrip on you tube showing a turbo prop 200hp on an ultra light size aircraft at Oshkosh recently.

no radiator required. Was only mock up at moment, but think of the performance. I think 270lbs was quoted install weight (122 kg).

  6. Eucalyptus oil or tea tree oil gets rid of sticker residue on cars and caravans skins. Try micro fibre as its grippy soft surface works well without damaging delicate paints.

if fibreglass or metal an eraser wheel works, not on soft fabric though.

    cheers

  7. Ice does weird things even to cars aerodynamics, we had a minus 4 frost on Monday, my roof bars on triton only make a small amount of cabin noise at around 100km normally, they were solid with ice lumps on them, and the howl was deafening in the cabin all the way to work. They are shaped like an airfoil, but the upset was noticeable. If your wings/struts had that happen I don’t think it would be real great for airflow

  8. My workshop rained coffee coloured water on everything, every night until I pulled the roof sheets of nd fitted Aircell insulation, now no more raindrops. It is like bubble wrap made from foil. It is not cheap (around 300 for 30m by 1.3m roll) if you get in and do with hanger owner to save on labour it will make a big difference. Knocks the heat out of the shed in summer, which will help with heat sensitive aeroplane parts.

  9. A bit like reading about our RAAF personal sent to fly P40s to Papua New Guinea to fight japs after learning in tigers and low powered trainers. In the book 44 days it was mentioned several were lost on way up coast within hours of takeoff, training had consisted of go read the manual and taxi around.

the true pressures on RAAF pilots were probably much higher than the guy just wanting to have a nice toy, but results the same.

Sorry, but the wheels fell off in your second sentence, the owner has no obligation to weigh their van, in Queensland unless the rules changed very recently.

In fact to use a truck weighbridge capable of weighing 40 tonnes or so is not accurate weighing 1.5 tonnes, as I have proven.

No caravan manufacturer I know of provides a certified weighbridge certificate declaring tare weight of van at time of sale.

Blame the regulators for poor administration of caravan and trailer weights,  they  just fine you for a breach on the side of the road.

The regulators could fix it but are too lazy......like other regulators I know 😞

Jayco weigh each van off the line and attach the ticket inside, no tare on plate due to accessories being added after manufacture are to be allowed for by owner. Lots of vans way over due to soft regulation, weighing one in a hundred and making mid season changes. Not many interested customers in doing research before buying and wanting more and more gizmo’s in their van to best their mates. I have worked in industry for 20 years now. Car sellers not advising in a practical way as turbo pointed out, 1 driver, some fuel and no crap onboard to get 3500kg towing do not help either for newbies only following advertising campaigns.

  11. Today was too nice to pass up, out to the airport, move 5 planes by hand to get to back of hanger, after that 1 hour workout, Flew out to Barraba landed and had a drink and snack, then home. Not far but fun any way. Need to plan a longer run to do, maybe Narromine and look at museum again. Good to see some water in split rock reservoir. Still a long way to go.A9F0C7A0-D092-4E82-834C-B5D497278876.thumb.jpeg.cf466bbcd6f130b65841ad71889031e0.jpeg

  12. a great video to show how bad no visual is, I watched both horizons when he was banking steep whilst fiddling with the tech, cringing at how steep the angle was becoming.
Bushfire smoke is closest I’ve came to fir for real, not a place you want to be. Every noise seems extreme when you lose visual.
    thanks for sharing

  13. His project was interesting and looked to be progressing well. Shame not to see it completed or closer.

sometimes things get in the way, I did a hour or two on my Bushbaby on the weekend and achieved some tasks.

now need to make a list so jobs can be completed. 7 years and no air time. Needs to change.
