  1. EKP4 faults...

Been there, done that... I think it was caused by an electrical glitch on turn off in my

Jab j230 corrupting the flash card. Learnt to turn the avionics off first.... Only way to resolve it that I could find was a trip to EDMO , the distributor in Adelaide, who sold me a whole new card.... ouch! 051_crying.gif.fe5d15edcc60afab3cc76b2638e7acf3.gif . EDMO were good though.

  2. Thinking about this, I know of three woman pilots in my club. One is training to be an RAaus Instructor, the second uses HER Foxbat as a motor bike replacement on THEIR property in the north.. the third flies every where with her man, sharing out the left hand seat between them. My wife (a dentist) is learning to fly. None of these women are under 50. I think it is more about the differing prioreties for men and women in this very short lifetime we have.049_sad.gif.af5e5c0993af131d9c5bfe880fbbc2a0.gif

  3. Seems I might have started something here.087_sorry.gif.8f9ce404ad3aa941b2729edb25b7c714.gif ....The present (American?) trend to "hookups" rather than the dating game of my youth I find disturbing to say the least. But its not my world...it belongs to my son and his generation now. He can sow his wild oats as he sees fit, provided he reaps any crop....deftly:ah_oh: Yen is right though, and the difficult world of the near future will need nuclear families, without any implied explosion thereof :ne_nau:

  4. My aircraft has a complete glass cockpit, but with a set of mechanical gauges as a back up.

Having said that, the only one that has ever failed me is the mechanical (Chinese

manufacture) altimeter (fitted by the factory) that did not want to come down from 3500

feet:ah_oh:. Still hasnt.thumb_down It was backed up by the gps and the altimeter in the Dynon. The

moving map gps has to be backed up with a paper map and a pencil track, and in my case

there is also a dry battery powered Garmin handheld gps in the safety grab bag. Next thingo

    is an autopilot....087_sorry.gif.8f9ce404ad3aa941b2729edb25b7c714.gif

  5. I would say that the Painted Desert/Hills were the highlight of the trip we did north in August. The now drying out Lake Eyre and flying around in Wilpena too. Catch Maree man before he fades away due to wind erosion. If you are going through via Adelaide, then look for the whales at Middleton/ Goolwa:thumb_up:. Fuel at William Creek (bowser), Maree (drum), Arkaroola, Jamestown.

  6. The longest trip was flying back from the factory in Bundaberg to Murray Bridge. This was 9.9 hours in my log book, spread over 2 days. I have flown Murray Bridge to Narromine in the back blocks of NSW twice, around 8.5 hours there and back. The 230 here is registered as a light sport aircraft, 600kg MTOW. It burns about 21-23 litres per hour, and gives an honest 120 knots. It is really an 430 with no back seats, so there is a lot of room at the back. Not so good in the front, asI am 6 ft 6 tall. My mates Cessna 172s burns 40 litres per hour and gives about 110 knots. Its bigger mass means it is thrown about less in turbulence, but it still is. Want a smooth ride, go in a spam can. The real limitation of any light aircraft is the pilot's bladder range. Peeing in a bottle :ah_oh: is not great without an autopilot, so 2-3 hours is a good leg. Murray Bridge to Hay. Stop, have lunch, a pee, refuel the aeroplane , onto Narromine.

Interesting that a hangar space is around $240 a month in the US. A bout the same here, except in Pacific Pesos. Get the ticket, buy the plane, it really is a new kind of freedom that only a fraction of 1% of the populace enjoys.

  7. GPS Woes

Might be relevant. I also lost all the map data etc on the AVMAP gps in my j230c. It was resolved by the local agent by fitting a new map plug in card. Different GPS, same fault. I think I perhaps caused it by starting the aeroplane with the avionics on. That or a transient in the barely adequate Jabiru wiring. Going to fit one of those huge capacitors (1 Farad) that the kids put in their car stereos, the ones that go Dooof doof....031_loopy.gif.e6c12871a67563904dadc7a0d20945bf.gif

    Marcus

  8. yes, what is missing is attention to detail. I wrote Jabiru a letter about the rubbish

quality of their wiring, something I am more than qualified to talk about. Mentioned the other things, and suggested that a senior quality manager should be appointed who can simply veto the delivery of an aircraft until it qualifies to a certain minimum standard...yeah, .. right. With a 40 ft x 12 ft wall full of orders and my bank cheque in the piggy bank, what do I know?088_censored.gif.2b71e8da9d295ba8f94b998d0f2420b4.gif

  9. Okay, I'll step in too.. I bought my j230c from the factory with the electronic dash..dynon ems, efis, Avmap EKPIV gps. In Australia the j230c is registered under the local interpretation of the Light Sport Aircraft rules.. 2 people , 600 Kg MTOW. It is registered RA aus, with a calibrated transponder and two radios and the Dynon? pitot tube. It cost me AU$ 112K plus some change. I flew it back early August 2007 from Bundaberg. It has around 75 hours up, including two trips back to Narromine ( 500 nautical miles each way). The aircraft lives in a hangar at Murray Bridge

I am a low hours pilot and about 6 ft 5 ins tall. It is hard to get into, but comfortable enough once there. The real limitation is your need for a pee... The aircraft is like the Curates egg.. good in places.. It flies nicely and quickly.. an easy 120 Knots at 22-23 liters per hour. So far no problems with temperatures.. I have had the oil cooler ducting modfied as per the factory mods, but it was cool before. You do hear stories though..My gripes are with the detail finish..nasty door closures, crap door pockets that pull off, rubber cement all over, missing Zuzz fasteners, spat screws falling off all over town because of no use of locktite at fitting, loose lock nuts on the throttes.. The EKP also lost its data base one fine day, but that is not down to Jabiru.. if it were a BMW for the same money I would be deeply upset with all of this..049_sad.gif.af5e5c0993af131d9c5bfe880fbbc2a0.gif But my mate, who has 3000 plus hours in many kinds of aircraft including general aviation types says it is a beautiful, quick aeroplane...and it flies beautifully too, so shut up..087_sorry.gif.8f9ce404ad3aa941b2729edb25b7c714.gif...

    Marcus

  10. Any body know of a licenced technician who can calibrate a transponder in Adelaide

(or nearbye) ? Jabiru sell you one with j230c that is not calibrated . It is a Microair

    product.

  11. Fuel Stains

Yes, my j230c showed stains at the connection to the Dynon fuel sender. Its under

the cover at the back. Increased the clamp presure. Seemed to fix it. Keep an eye

on it though. That fuel metering stopped for a while due to a tiny bit of crap under

the impeller. 0 litres an hour for a while there..049_sad.gif.af5e5c0993af131d9c5bfe880fbbc2a0.gif

  12. Device Not present.....

Further to the apparent cure... Noticed finally 025_blush.gif.9304aaf8465a2b6ab5171f41c5565775.gif that no airfields other than my

past waypoints and tracks from earlier trips were in the data base. Particularly the

restricted zone near YMBD was not there 088_censored.gif.2b71e8da9d295ba8f94b998d0f2420b4.gif...., but the Terrain Alert stuff was

    all working question.gif.c2f6860684cbd9834a97934921df4bcb.gif.

So I phoned EDMO, whose phones were on the blink.. Telstra 088_censored.gif.2b71e8da9d295ba8f94b998d0f2420b4.gif. EDMO were really

good. Gave me a replacement CF card. Works properly now . Seems to have a lot

airfields in that weren't there before 018_hug.gif.8f44196246785568c4ba31412287795a.gif Bought a used Garmin 96 with the latest

Jeppersen maps on fleabay for $250, powered by drycells.., as a backup and flew

5083 off to Natfly with a very experienced navigator beside me, doing it all the

proper way as a constant cross check. The moving map on the AVMAP was really

good flying back from NATFLY, dodging the rain showers. After all, Jab props dissolve

in the rain, don't they 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif? For now...Closed..

  13. I am basically myopic. Used to be able to focus up verrrrry close. With age that has

all gone west :black_eye:, so I now use bifocals, in glass, and they are photo chromic; they

go dark grey with UV. Works OK for now.024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif I would expect that polariods would be

    better tho

    regards

    Marcus

  14. Yeah, the electric everything panel from Jab is the Avmap. The only thing I would change on 5083 is to get the larger Dynon EMS screen, but you can split the EFIS screen on the left (see my avatar) to include the EMS screen as well. Works OK. :) Bloke I rent the hangar from had a Garmin fail (296 I think), replaced under warranty. Its something they do.
