  1. Hey Pearo, what would you do then if departing crossword or overhead?
  2. My instructor had me leveling off until past the downwind threshold....probably an extra safety precaution for student pilots
  3. Another question for you guys that I can't find an answer too anywhere: when departing a class g aerodrome downwind, do you have to stay at circuit altitude on downwind until clear of the zone (3nm) or can you continue to climb out on the downwind leg? Rich
  4. Did they mention anything about when the Android version was going to be updated with all the functions of ozrunways?
  5. Nice one! Who did you do your training with?
  6. But if the centre of pressure is still behind the centre of gravity wouldn't any increase in lift cause the nose to pitch down? If we factor in drag, the nose pitches up (for a jabiru) because the drag moment (pitch up) is great than the lift moment (pitch down)--> net result for the Jab is a pitch up. Does that make any sense? ...lol I can see that all this really is aeroplane specific and this type of question couldn't really be asked in a general context such as BAK.
  7. Maybe it's just the jabiru I'm learning to fly in, but during runups there is only a tiny drop in rpm due to carb heat. Would this equate to significant power loss at full power?
  8. In the Jabiru it pitches up. Flaps down, nose down I'm taught to maintain altitude.
  9. If the conditions are right, how quickly can one accumulate carb ice? I ask this question because it seems a common practice is to turn carb heat off on final approach in case of a go-around. Is this potentially a dangerous time to be turning carb heat off? And given that you only lose a few percent in engine power, would it make much difference in the go-around if you left carb heat on? Why not turn carb heat off after applying full power and going around? Rich
  10. Why do I see so many youtube videos of pilots turning off the fuel pump after takeoff at 300-400ft? If this is the only thing supplying fuel to the engine in case of an engine driven pump failure, it seems like the worse time to be turning the pump off. Why not at a much higher altitude, top of climb for example in small GA planes? What do you guys do?
  11. Just reading about the centre of gravity/centre of pressure and why the nose drops when thrust is reduce. This makes sense but it got me thinking about what would happen in the case of a sudden increase in headwind (i.e. windshear) and no change in thrust. Does the nose attitude momentarily pitch up, down or stay the same? With the centre of pressure (lift) behind the center of gravity id guess that you get a nose down attitude but i presume the tail plane has a say in this. Rich
  12. FYI, when I was at the Wings over Illawarra airshow i asked Ozrunways when the lite version was going to be updated to the full version similar to Ozrunways. The representative told me that the using the default mapping technologies in android meant overlays were difficult/impossible and that they had to develop there own mapping engine for android. Form what i understood this has just been completed and they are looking to roll out the extra functionality in stages soon to make it on par with Ozrunways. Rich
  13. Are you kidding? I've listened to all your podcasts and they are all excellent! Anyone reading this that hasn't listened to recflyers podcasts then do so now.
  14. I presume from a legal standpoint it's OK to mount gopros inside the cockpit?
  15. Another couple of questions i hope someone can help me with: 1) Why does my car engine red line at 6500 rpm whereas my Jabiru 170 redlines at less than half that? 2) Why do we have to earth the plane and refuelling equipment during refuelling of an aereoplane, but not that of an automobile at a petrol station? I presume it has something to do with the type of fuel, but even some aircraft can run off petrol. Rich
  16. Hey guys, can any of you point me towards the legislation regarding the mounting of gopro cameras inside and outside of the cockpit. Couldn't find any info on the CASA website regarding this. Thanks, Rich
  17. My first solo came as a complete surprise .... I had no idea that i would be flying solo so soon in my training that the thought didnt even cross my mind. I thank my instructor for that because he saved me from a sleepless night :) I had just completed a few circuits with my instructor when he told me to come to a stop. He then proceeded to tell me that i was to fly the next one myself. In my ignorance I told him that I had been flying the last three by myself! He qualified my statement by saying that to fly the next one without him in the plane! From there, it was just going through the motions of flying a circuit, do what i had been trained to do. TBH, there was no time to think about the fact i was flying by myself.....that is until after I landed when it all sank in. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face for the rest of the day. I only did about 20 more hours flying after that moment. 17 years later and Im back resuming my training. Sometime in the near future Ill be doing a kind of first 'solo' flight again ...cant wait! Rich
  18. I'll be there as it is just down the road from my place :) Should be a great weekend. Spent the afternoon down at the airport watching the mustang and roulettes and going through their routines.
  19. Thanks mate. I'm going to do things a bit differently this time around. Enjoy each stage of my license rather than looking to far ahead. In saying that, my training school has a 230 too and I'm looking forward to trying that ...lol.
  20. Had my first training flight with Bruce from Fly Illawarra this afternoon! I had previously clocked up about 30hrs of flying 17 years ago before money and life got in the way, so needless to say i was pretty excited today to go flying again. Almost didn't happen due to the rainy weather and wind gusting up to 25kts. Not ideal weather to resume my flying career but im glad I went up.... it was awesome! Very impressed with the little Jabiru 170 and the instructor Bruce. Took some video footage of the flight which i hope to edit over the next week and share if its OK with the instructor. Fortunately and unfortunately 'Wings over Illawarra' is on next weekend at my airport YWOL so no flying lesson but it will be great to check out all the aircraft coming in for the show. Cant wait for the next lesson in a couple of weeks though :) Rich
  21. Thanks Jay... thats some good info there. Ill run this by the owner again and see what he has to say about it. Rich
  22. Hi guys, can't seem to the find the ra-aus flight training syllabus online anywhere. Do you have to be a member to access this information? Particularly after the syllabus that covers the theory topics for the exams. Thanks, Rich
  23. Talked to a RA flying training organisation in Wollongong this afternoon and the owner said that RA hours count towards a PPL if you wish to make the conversion, but not towards CPL hours if you choose to become a commercial pilot down the track. Is this correct? He mentioned something about Part 61 and registered planes. Rich
  24. If it doesn't work out with Bruce then its good to know I've got a few other options :) However, I met up with Bruce this afternoon and was very impressed. He spent 2 hours with me answering all my questions and showing me his fleet of training aircraft. First lesson next Saturday in the Jabiru... cant wait.
