  1. Hello Ian,The maintenance side of things is micro managed as well.

The L1 was simply an embarrassment, fancy doing a test on a computer screen -- that only proves people can read.

What about nuts and bolts then there is lock wiring how can someone learn about those without some practical training.

Tension wrench, glass repairs, rivets and aluminium, tyre changing just to name a few.

Takes all day to get through the subjects in basic maintenance, this is a basic maintenance of which I am involved with its delivering.

I had a look at the RAAus L1 and to me it is an embarrassment all from as office in Canberra no infield tutoring, refused to do it.

The problem Keith is the inflexible approach/attitude of the ex Tech Manager now “consultant” after resigning. I have qualified 3 (yes THREE) times, maintained my aircraft for 10 years, and completed the manufacturers maintenance course (with yourself) not recognised by the current administration - it is plain stupidity to have to repeat this process every time some some wanker comes up with a new idea. One could easily believe it was for some browny points with CASA and after that didn’t work out maybe some sense might now apply. I actually doubt it as I took up this subject with Banfield at a board meeting and received an aggorant reply which I suspect will continue under the “consultant” title.

  2. Why would it be expected that members are informed? There is no requirement for a public company to tell the shareholders what is going on employee wise.

Come to think of it, it must be one of the very few public companies that require the shareholders to buy new shares every year.

The very reason why this disastrous move needs to be reversed and returned to its members (remember the claims of no change to members - and too many were conned by a couple).

  3. Well, maybe nothing has happened. The discussion all seems to be related to hearsay or "I was told" etc. He may well be on leave or something.

It was from the office manager in writing (after enquiring) that he had resigned and members would be advised. When???

Current rumours have Darren back on the RAA payroll?????!

It would be nice, reasonably expected even, for members to be informed!

  4. I made the assumption that the majority of pilots who are members here are only RAAus certificated, not CASA licensed as wel

I have no idea on that, but I can say that of the RAA Pilots I know in my area quite a few are also CASA qualified (at various levels from RPL to ATPL). If I was pushed to guess I would say in the vicinity of 30% but that is just off the top of my head.

  5. One has to question the morals of people who avoid a relatively small fee by either falsely identifying the aircraft they are using, or not identifying themselves at all.Not only are they robbing the operator of an airfield of the where-with-all to keep the airfield in operation, they are tarnishing the character of every other pilot using the airport.

Perhaps there should be a push from the members to have RAAus cancel the pilot certificate of persons guilty of fraudulent conduct of this type.

However, if a pilot is going to engage in fraudulent activity, can anyone expect the same person to worry about the currency of their certificate? Who is going to catch them out?

    OME

I think you missed the point. I was not referring to RAA pilots, why would they anyway. If you are not aware of this rife behaviour you need to get away from the coast for a while.

  6. So does anybody know what has or is going to happen.

    So far (secondhand information only)

    1. The Tech Manager resigns

    2. The assistant acting as Tech Manager (only ascertained by direct question to RAA - stating members will be informed - WHEN does come to mind - maybe next year?)

    3. The ex-Tech Manager gets another job and resigns from that, no interest in his other career moves. Surely not reappointed as if nothing happened????

STILL NOTHING from RAA. What is the secret? Is this what constitutes open and accountable management?

Serious failing here. Is the most important issue to management registering and then deregistering a slogan?

Whatever reason they are avoiding openness for, certainly feeds rumours, conspiracy theories , and downright mistrust.

  7. Used to..(belongs to) Slartibartfast ( last posted 2016)

Had an occasion flying into Watts Bridge to experience the on air behaviour of this individual. Suffice to say I (and a following CPL/instructor) have a different opinion of the professionism/airmanship of this individual. But I accept everyone is entitled to their opinion. I didn’t respond on the radio but waited in the vicinity of the aircraft a couple of times during the day hoping to meet him to discuss the legal requirements in relation to circuit entry. Unfortunately or perhaps fortunately we did not meet - but you take people as you find them (or not as the case may be).

  8. RAA not publishing names and addresses is hardly the same as "widespread avoidance and effort to use the fields while remaining anonymous.", by rec pilots.

I wonder how well people are informed about either No Or False callsigns being used now by aircraft, (and at times no radio calls at all) I think worrying about a couple of RAA aircraft is probably misguided. AVDATA has it limitations.

  9. Just wonder did RAAus board leave the door open for him to come home after he did not like the real world?Anything is possible down there..

Only thing I know for shore is that it being kept secret from members whatever is happening! The new “improved” management. BS.

  10. So the Tech Manager has left (started with casa this week)

    The rumours were correct.

I got a reply after asking who the current Tech Manager was - now Jayden acting Tech Manager.

Still NOTHING from RAA to members - an announcement will be made in the future!

A key position in our (or once was our orginsation) vacated but not deemed necessary to inform members.

I have no doubt the supporters of this secret society will still justify the outcomes but to me it is tolally unacceptable and an insult. Rumours are rife but again only rumours so we will see what eventuates.

I hope the supporters of this ficasco are still happy with their decision.

  11. Then a while back, here in Aus. there was the AUF CFI ( name withheld ) who buzzed his estranged partner's house, in an attempt to terrorise her! he was convicted and did jail time over it! I received a couple of Emails from the guy, while he was in jail, trying to convince me he was innocent of the charges.

Frank, The major charge resulting in the jail time in this case was “Dangerous Operation of a Vehicle” under the Qld Criminal Code.

  12. Threads once posted assume a life of their own. There's not much serious stuff about flying or building. (in my view). I don't really know what others want.. Nev

From my point of view I am only interested in the flying content. Religious/political/greenie etc. matters are all subjects that everyone has their own views on (many strongly held) and there is plenty of places to debate that if one is so inclined, even WUA I guess but I never go there as I have my own opinion and not interested in hearing others.

If Rec Flying is to be about “flying” and associated matters like CASA & RAA then there is not space for the other social distractions - after all there is enough disagreement and debate about flying/aircraft/administration and the like without including unrelated subjects.

Just my view and I accept there will be plenty who disagree with me on that also, but so be it.

  13. Commonsense, practical knowledge of the industry, knowledge of what is happening throughout Australia doesn’t come with a business/law degree etc. A Canberra centric approach will never be suitable for RAA.

Political style announcements are sickening, to me at least, which is why I have stopped reading most of the dribble.

  14. Yes please John. I haven't heard overheating in a rev range 033_scratching_head.gif.b541836ec2811b6655a8e435f4c1b53a.gif Keen to learn about real experiences and how problems are avoided by some and not others. Unless Jabiru owners are a different breed to Rotax owners, it can't all be down to maintenance and operational factors (IMHO). My preferred engine would be a reliable Jabiru.A VH registered J430 would allow me to take my children flying and second hand ones are available at 'good' prices, but the engine issues put me off. I suspect the 'good' second hand prices are related to the engine issues. I am unaware of other problems.

Short answer from my experience, they don’t like operating in low RPM range. 2900 - 3000rpm seems to be ideal. In a couple I have flown with full EMS instruments you get differences in temps below about 2900rpm. Use 2900 and plan 25ltrs/hr seems about right (3300 motor) - I have limited exposure to the 2200 motor.

  15. Congratulations to RAAus for keeping personal information private as required by law.CASA, on the other hand, in an act of absolute arrogance, publish all details including name and address to the world on the internet.

When asked how they justify breaching the Privacy Principles, their answer was because they wrote a regulation permitting them to do this.

So any would be home invader can see I own an aeroplane and decide I must be a good prospect for a robbery.

    Kaz

    Ditto with your car registration.

  16. Last time I went there (before it became an aboriginal rip off - so some years ago - still known as Ayres Rock) we landed on the airstrip next to the rock, collected by the local motel and had a great time. Twice actually, a couple of years apart - once as a CHTR and once with 3 private aircraft.

Since the BS started I have not returned and don’t intend to.

The whole “aboriginal business” thing is just political which I refuse to be part of, sad really, but just my attitude to the matter.

A great “natural” resource bastardised by politics - by BOTH sides.

  17. I must be getting old the worn out phrase "I remember when" automatically entered, what passes for my mind. I learnt to fly in central NSW we had many fun weekends on farmers strips with activities like , the aforementioned flower bombing, most accurate landing (over virtual fence & into the box), toilet paper cutting. The local instructor(s) would come along as the impartial judges. There was always a BBQ ,prizes for all including the "wooden spoon" for those that "crashed & burnt". Great way of maintaining basic flying skills and camaraderie (neary a sigh of bureaucracy in any form).

An interesting result ref “current” V “total time” was the results achieved by students over PPLs in the forced & spot landing competitions. I must admit I haven’t seen or heard of this type of activity for many years.
