  1. Up high you may as well be in a bus, need to see the leaves on the trees, look the roo's in the eyes.this is how it was,and still is for some.my little 503 has never let me down.

That engine doesnt have carby heat. One day you'll be able to pick the leaves from the trees.

  2. During the "climb" he had spent a lot of time looking down fiddling with something. At that stage I already put him in the d--- brain catagory. If he actually did lean the mixture, then of course continuing on was insanity. He had one supporter who congradulated him on how well he crashed the plane, saving their lives. The earth would stop turning before I even had him for a passenger.

  3. The procedure in taking off at high density altitude is to use some mixture control leaning. You still want the engine to run rich but not so rich that you are climbing out with very low power. As you gain altitude, your power drops off even more. He probably was afraid to lean thinking he would damage his engine, so he let the plane crash into the trees-good choice

  4. Pilots usually don't want to spoil their fun by thinking of potential accidents all the time. A famous aircraft designer had a news letter for many years. Each issue started off with accidents that occured with his a/c design and what modifications and flying techniques needed to be changed. Readers complained they did not want to read so much of that. So the newsletters started off with some story about dad taking mom and the kids to see grandma and grandpa and eating some possum pie. Then visiting uncle Bob on his farm................................. and flying back, for "great day" So, anything worthwhile reading had to be found more than half way down, to be rated as uncomfortable reading.

  5. In car engines even torque is essential because you have to maintain a seal over a large area. The amount of torque is not super critical as I will increase the torque settings depending on circumstances. In an aircooled a/c engine there is no compression seal and only an o-ring to contain oil splash. The hold down bolts just keep the cyl. head attached and aligned on the block. If the torque is a bit less or more that is not problem as long as the head stays attached and does not move. An issue of breaking bolts should be addressed with stronger bolts. Any issue of extra weight is insignificant to one of cyl. head flying off.

  6. The first criteria of a company in recommending a product is profit. The financial industry is full of this. Before the big bust, some American companies would promote sale of a financial product then secretly hedge on it's failure. Consumers are taken for a ride every minute of the day on everything from soap to spaceships.

  7. I only once or twice flew in a Jabiru (LSA 55) with a 1600 in it, this was during initial Jabiru training. After it was replaced with 2200, engine (same aircraft) it felt like a rocket.Well compared to the old engine.

You'll need more than that to get to outer space:smile:

  8. I think the immediate effect of the lighter oil would be on the hydraulic valve lifters. Sludge is the no one enemy. I've quietened down many car lifters with half hour hot high speed run, which is the same as thinning the oil and that oil moving the sludge along. Hydraulic valve lifters:thumb down:
