  1. Oh and BLA, don't worry about starting a few fires, hypocrits who don't practice what they preach need a good kick in the XXXX. If they really did what they claim as gods work, this thread wouldn't be needed as starvation wouldn't exist and neither would a severe shortage of vital common medicine in PNG.

  2. Well this might start a few fires but the churches might think of spending some of the thousands of dollars that they get from their followers every year instead of lining their pockets. Why should they expect pilots to do a dangerous job for low money or free when they open their hands to every handout they can get. The catholic church is the owner of some of the most expensive real estate in the world yet they can't afford pilots. What a CROK:angry:

    I remember hearing about the pope who said he was going to sell off some of the churches wealth and save all the starving people. He strangely got shot the next day. The poor pope was only in power for a few days. Hmmm

    I think you are totally right in saying the Catholic church can fix the worlds problems with all their wealth. They could definatly afford pilots.

  3. I have been thinking about this for a while, and I'm think there are people who learn to fly for something to do and there are people who learn to fly with the intention of buying a plane. Sure there are other reasons for flying too but these seem to be the main reasons in RA. I would go the drifter if I was planning to buy a plane as you can buy a perfect drifter for under $20k and one with a simple 2 stroke engine will be easy to maintain for someone just starting to learn about motors.

  4. My great grandfather was a pilot in the Polish Air Force. He performed aerobatics at shows around the county, he also pinched a plane from the French, and took it back to poland on a mission. And they copied it in an air force factory, where he worked as the test pilot until he was shot by Nazi's on the way to work. My grand father told me all these stories as a kid.

    My mum's cousin was a Harrier pilot in the RAF, who saw combat in the Falklands. Always loved the stories.

    Anyway, what's cooler than flying? It's the one activity the truly satisfies me.

  5. Speed in metres per second, 600km/h = 166.66turn radius = 50 metres

    Acceleration = 166.66 x 166.66 / 50 = 555 metres per second squared.

    1G = 9.8 metres per second squared.

    555/9.8 = 57 G's.

    Slightly Lethal acceleration.

    Wow! Its amazing the little glider can cope with that force.

  6. I would like this post to be about finding products to do with flying for a really good price. The kind of deals you hear about after they are finished and feel annoyed for missing them. So if you know of any good deals getting round, add them on this post.

    For example:

    Product

    Price

    Location/Website

    Rotax 582 gasket kit,

    $20

    www. this is only an example .com

    And If anyone see a product that is on this post and knows of where you can get it cheaper, please feel free to quote the previous post and enter the details of the better deal bellow that.

    Paying less for something is always better, so lets all help each others pockets with a little team work.

  7. Brilliant video, it would be much trickier to soar over water with the constant variables over the water, but achievable none the less.

    It bet the little glider would be pulling well over a fatal level of G's. A 100m circle at 600kmph, does anyone have the equation book handy to figure out the G's?

  8. No.. 4 injections on insulin a day took that possibility out of the equation for me... Have to say, the need for this medical for the new CTA endorsement was a pain for me, Im shortly to move to Coffs Harbour. There is a complet lack of ultralight friendly facilities in the area and coffs is class D for tower hours.... I guess I'll have to speak lovingly to the bank manager and see if I can make do with 70 or so acres out west of coffs in class G friendly skys....Ive heard that some Type 1 diabetics have fought and won the medical, but as I understand each win does nothing in setting a precedent and everyone after has to repeat the entire fight... not something Im keen to do. The unfortunate fact is that its the case of the lowest common demonimator applying again because that is the easiest thing to do.

    Andy

    Hey Andy, I have heard of stem cells being injected into the pancreas that enabled it to regain full function without a need for any injections. Last I heard the young guy from NZ who received the experimental treatment was living a happy healthy life 10 years on.

  9. The cool thing about custom pistons is you can order them with 3 options well suited to air cooled operations. first option is a high silicone content to stop the pistons expanding under high heat, second option is a ceramic top coating that has many benefits in the heat transfer, reduces fatigue on the pistons and as less heat is transferred into the piston the energy makes the gas expand more, giving an increase in power. also the piston skirts can be impregnated with a dry lube that reduces wear on the bores as the motor warms up.

    I have rebuilt many air cooled motors in my time and I swear by quality parts. In saying that, prepping an engine before a build is so crucial. A poor engine build with top quality parts can fail well before a stock built engine that has been prepped well.

    It all come down to research before and patience during a build.

  10. Then why do they use these components in the race engines at Reno? Its because they are better, safer and more reliable components. They are not miss matched as they are custom made for every build. Sitting at an aviation red line would no stress these components out at all. Look at the constant high revs NASCAR engines go through without an engine failure using similar components.

    The holden pistons Jabiru use are not as good as CP pistons. The ring lands crack far easier than a good set of forged pistons if you get a bad batch of fuel and have some bad pre ignition.

    Regardles of the engine, car or plane, the pistons, rods and valves have the same job. I'll take the better quality components over the b grade Jabiru parts any day.

  11. off topic but much the same way as dynamic soaring was discover by a glider pilot following a bird over mountains, on a calm day, the effect of flying at certain angles to the swell can increase range and speed massivly. Apparently some ocean birds can fly in a wave vortex for thousands of kilometers with the only effort being that of steering.

  12. I heard a Mr Goodie (now deceased) flew a Drifter from Lord Howe Is to Ballina ?...years ago, on the deck all the way also....got to be a flight of note in a Drifter?.....................024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

    Wow, that's a long haul. guess those factory option long range tanks came in handy lol.

  13. Southeast Asia works on bribes. once you get to the airport, pay the re-fill guy a decent tip and tell him you will pay him a bigger tip next time you see him if he lets you get on your way quickly. If he thinks he will see you again he wont hold you up as he will want to see you again for that tip.

    Make sure you know where the fuel depot is at each airport and taxi over there as soon as you land to refill and be on your way.
