Now I'm more confused than ever 😄

I THINK cooling will be ok as I will be using a RAM mount, so plenty of air circulating around. When you say 30 seconds of fiddling. Is that a once off, or every time you want to pair it? If every time, then that's a problem because sure as eggs imma forget to do that until I'm in the air, where I don't want to be fiddling.

The Android problem is Skyecho connects to the tablet via wifi, so your EFB thinks this is an internet source, which it's not. So you have to tell the tablet that your EFB only uses Mobile Data, so you get ADSB traffic from the Skyecho Wifi and EFB traffic from the mobile data. The Apple versions of the EFBs seem to have this function integrated, so it's easier.

For Android, you can set it up so it's a once off.

Basically, you change the settings so Av-Plan or Oz Rwy only uses mobile data, not wifi data. Which means your EFB will always be using mobile data, even for chart and ERSA upgrades.

If you're not concerned with you Mobile Data usage, you can set it once and forget it.

Tight arses like me like to use WIFI at home to reduce our mobile data usage, so we switch back and forth each flight.

I've had an Ipad overheat in a RAM mount after 25 minutes into a flight. This was the second time it happened, so I cracked it and bought the Samsung, and sold the Ipad for more than double that.

    I haven't decided which I prefer actually.

The Ipad is easier to use and the EFBs have more functions, some of which I do actually miss.

But the Android tablets are significantly cheaper and so far, I've not had it overheat. Even though I've had backups when it's happened with the Ipads, is a major pain and a huge distraction.

With the overheat issue, I'm in a perspex bubble, so worst case scenario.

  2. Danny, depends on what type of pain you want.

The Skyecho with ipad, just works, no connection issues

The Skyecho with Samsung (Android) requires 30 seconds of changing System settings and then works.

I've had 2 Ipad overheat issues, none with the Samsung.

Samsung tablet was $400 cheaper than the equivalent Ipad, I could buy 2 Samsung tablets for one Ipad and have change to spare.

Avplan has more features on the Ipad vesion than the Android one

    So pick your poison.

    Mogas.

I can possibly help here, but I need your feedback.

I can collect a heap of 20 litre plastic containers that have had herbicides in them. I can flush them out with Mogas to get rid of any herbicide residue. I can provide these containers to pilots needing 98 octane Mogas. A servo in Gilgandra had its underground storage tanks replaced late in 2022, so they are basically brand new. If a pilot wants to get some 98 Mogas, I can have a couple of the event volunteers take the drums and get them filled, each with 20 litres by the bowser meter (they are brand new, too). The price of 20 litres would simply be the price from the pump plus, say, $5 per pilot getting fuel to cover the cost of our petrol to go too and from.

Would it be possible to have the volunteer and car at Gilgandra?

those wanting Mogas (ie me 😁, I have my own collapsible jerrycans) could simply fly into Gilgandra, pay the volunteer $5 to drive them to the servo and they can purchase fuel. This would avoid the liability re fuel, as the pilot has purchased it themselves.

and it will want to float on your approach. Be prepared for that and as we said, if you're not completely happy with how the approach is going, go around. But don't worry about it. Your instructor isn't going to “Fail” you for a missed approach. In fact they'll probably compliment you on your good decision making.

    That was exactly my experience.

Ended up high on approach and tried to force it down, realised I wasn't happy with it, so went around.  Bonus circuit for me 😁.

Instructor was happy when I got back as he could see I was too high and was glad I went around.

  5. The AC wil fly much sooner than normal and climb faster; watch your altitude, it's easy to bust through the 1000ft AGL circuit height when only 1 up as it will happen earlier in the circuit.

Don't be afraid to do a go around if you're not happy with your approach to landing.

    Enjoy, it's a once in a lifetime event 🙂

  6. "Sitting here in the west of Melbourne waiting for the rain to stop. Wondering what the weather is like in other parts of aus. We have a nice summer in Vic. 10deg here ATM.😁"

If it's any comfort, it's no better in the East, it's raining, again 🥺

When I was out at YLIL a week ago, it was hard to believe how bad it looks.

I know there are places that have had it worse, but it's copped a beating with the rain, only 1 of 3 runways open and the groundsman is working overtime trying to get the other 2 back to useable condition. This weather isn't helping.

Surely there can't be that much water left up in the sky, 'cause it's all down here 😵 🤣

It's worth noting that if you want cta today as a recreational pilot, the mechanism exists by way of getting a medical, the rpl and the relevant endorsemrbts or a ppl. With an appropriately fitted out aircraft, you can then fly in cta raa reg or vh.

Now is this the most economical / easiest / logical approach, probably not. At least it differentiates this as being a function of the pilot not the registration of the aircraft.

If you want to be able to fly in cta though I'd look at doing this rather than waiting an indeterminate amount of time for an raa cta endorsement that will have strings if it comes at all. Only down side is cost, but there's no such thing as cheap aviation.  Cheap is a relative term,  I just look at it as going broke more slowly.

Unfortunately or by design by the time you figure out you might need the cta, you're past the stage where you would have chosen a path ga or raa ( not that it's binary).

If you put a positive spin on it, you can pick up a new skill, and have the option to take 3pax up or more luggage. You might then decide you like / don't like ga or that cta isn't that important to you.

All true, but if RAAus drag their feet on this and the above is the only way to get CTA access, some will want to reduce that cost.

The easiest way for me to do that is transfer my AC reg to VH, and cancel my RAAus membership and registration as it's then superfluous and no longer required.

An LSA on VH reg and a Pilot with RPL basic med is going to have more privileges and less cost than an equivalent RAA member.

I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking along these lines.

10lph average sounds a bit low for a ol tecnam.

well what do we have,  TO roll, climb to 1000' in favourable condix , total 90 seconds at 27 lph. = 675mL

    probably low cruise 65% for 120 second  at 15lph = 0.5L

base, final average 30% for 150 seconds  maybe 8 lph =333mL
total time 360 seconds, total fuel 1.508L. equates to 15.08lph

well that's my guess, anyway .

Here is a man who is very good with numbers, I doubt there is much guesswork in your numbers RF 😉

    My empirical evidence supports this:

15L/hr for circuits in the Sportstar is what I regularly see.

  9. For me CTA access isn't about landing at Class C & D airports, (why would I want to go to Moorabbin, Essendon or Bankstown etc)

It's about being able to transit the airspace.

    ie

    East Sale

    Coffs Harbour

    Sydney Basin

    Greater Adelaide.

and i'm sure there are others.

These are all significant road blocks and the alternative routes either put you down really low, over tiger country or over deep water offshore, all of which create greater risk. Sometimes the alternative is to track significantly longer distances to avoid them all together.

  10. Kangaroos doing what they do best.

STATUS: Under review OCCURRENCE DETAILS SUBMITTED TO RAAUS: The aircraft was tracking BAXT to YSCO at 2500 feet. Approx. 25nm south of Scone, an unusual noise developed in the aircraft and got progressively worse over a period of approx. three minutes. Power was reduced and a severe vibration commenced. A call was placed to Brisbane Centre that the aircraft was experiencing difficulties and would be immediately commencing a precautionary search and landing and an approx. position given. A quarry haul road was selected as the best option due to the terrain and proximity of a farm residence. A decent was immediately commenced with a track over the farmhouse at low level. A landing was commenced on the haul road. Once established on the ground and about 80 metres into the roll-out, several kangaroos came across the road and one or maybe two were struck by the left wing of the aircraft. This placed the aircraft into a sliding rotation and the right wing struck the embankment which resulted in the aircraft rotating further and coming to rest against the embankment at 90 degrees. This had caused the nose-wheel to collapse and the left main damaged in the table-drain. The pilot shut down all systems and exited the aircraft uninjured.

  11. After reading this thread, I'm now further enlightened at how special the Sportstar is 🤩

You pull the choke all the way out and there it stays until you push it back in.

Actually, you can set it to any position and there it will stay, until further human intervention.

Thanks Skip for making me like my aircraft just a little more today 😁

  12. If you think this war is about anything but oil and gas, you're kidding yourself.

If Putin was genuinely concerned for the russian people in the 2 eastern states of Ukraine, he had all the military power to simply annexe them and defend them against all-comers.

But that's not what has happened. He has waged a country wide annihilation of a people.

The US are no better in their motives (oil and gas) when invading other countries either, but to their credit, their military precision (since Vietnam) gets it done with significantly lower collateral damage and significanlty less political and global anti-US fallout.

  13. I saw something recently from a home builder who was having overheating issues with his lycoming.

he eventually settled on the intake to the engine, and worked out the engine at WOT was consuming 6L/sec of the available cooling air.

He made a separate air intake for the airbox and saw CHT drop by 30deg.

  14. Only help I can offer would be to suggest you contact the SAAA

    SAAA

    From their website;

Our FSAs operate in accordance with SAAA’s Flight Safety & Training Manual – in summary our FSAs provide a mix of on ground support around planning, training and test flying, and also support in the air as test pilots, safety pilots, mentoring flight trainers and instructors.

My morning newspaper today tells me why we board aircraft from the left. It is a naval tradition, they say, because the Greek and Phoenician triremes had a steering oar on the right, or steer-board side, so had to pull up to the dock on the left, or port, side. A nice story, but complete BS

Not sure about the relation to aviation, but the naval stuff is correct. Steerboard became Starboard (right) and Port, well Port (left)

They would never dock steerboard side to the dock as damage to the steerboard was highly likely.

Other note, the word "Posh" is alleged to come from sea travel to Africa. Wealthy travellers would book a P.O.S.H. Cabin ticket.

Portside Out  - Starboad Home. The idea being they could see land out their cabin window on both trips.
