Experience with Rotax 914 Turbo?

I'm interested to hear from anyone who has used the Rotax 914 Turbo engine.

Thoughts on power, fuel burn and maintenance would be good to hear.

Considering this engine for a future aircraft.

Cheers

HI Mick,

We have a 914 turbo in our Sabre which has done nearly 500 hours. We purchased the aircraft s/h and initially had problems that stemmed from poor maintenance by the previous owner. We rectified electrical problems, leaking barrels and heads and flooding carbs and now happily fly the length and breadth of the country.

Fuel burn was originally quoted at 18 lts/hr at 4800 but we have found the engine happy at 4300 rpm 34 manifold and 15lt/hr for 107-110knts cruise. A recent trip to South Aus via Wagga and back to Brisbane returned an average fuel burn of 13.89lts/hr for 22hrs flight time.

We use av gas only so change the oil more frequently and the plugs more frequently. We use only Castrol GPS oil.

Cheers

Just wondering, GbR,

When you ran the aircraft at 4800 rpm, what speed were you doing? In other words, how much speed reduction are you sacrificing when you have lowered the fuel burn from 18 l/h to 13+ l/h?
