Flying a gyro is still somewhere ahead on the bucket list and I don't pretend to know a great deal about them. They sure do seem to have moved on from the Bensen, beach chair on a stick model though:cool:, I found these photos on an SA site, apparently they had 43 at a recent fly in.

All the modern technology and creature comforts are great but don`t you think that the guy who built and flew this one, would have got the biggest buzz?

You're very likely right Frank, still some of the best flying I've had was in (on?) a 503 powered trike, crisp still air, mist still lying in the valleys. Right back to basics.

One thing that does concern me about the older gyros is the possibility that the "buzz" may be the sound of your tail end fluttering as it passes your ear while you go end over end! Aside from creature comforts, those in the know tell me there have been big advances in aerodynamics and handling.

Spin, I wouldn`t mind having a go at a modern Gyro.

Years ago,a Drifter student of mine who also had a gyro, let me taxi it up and down the strip a couple of times. I got a lot of shaking through the control stick, from the rotor.

049_sad.gif.af5e5c0993af131d9c5bfe880fbbc2a0.gif I was holding the stick like it was a Tiapan, getting a sore arm and thought, " Bugger this, not for me"

I was later told that the shaking was because I wasn`t going fast enough to keep the Rotor steady and that`s fair enough but SSS.....Hit, I wasn`t game enough to go any faster, all of that stuff spinning around.006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

The guy I`m talking about is well into his seventies now and has a Xenon, side by side seating.

Frank.

  • 2 years later...

been looking at GYRO's of late as my Neighbour is real keen..I flew down to lamaroo rotor club 2 days ago to admire Kevin Traggers beast

was impressed with how it flew... and on take off/departure had the pleasure of looking down on it on final..awesome.
