Two Dead in Qld Ultralight Crash

A man and woman died when an ultralight plane crashed on takeoff north of the Sunshine Coast.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said an Allegro ultralight craft crashed at a private airstrip about 5pm (AEST) at Howard, west of Hervey Bay.

She said the aircraft had been cleared for takeoff to fly to Bundaberg when it crashed.

It was believed the plane clipped some trees and cartwheeled above a road after clearing the airstrip.

It crashed on a footpath at the corner of Marina Drive and Pacific Haven Circuit, just 50 metres from a home, and burst into flames.

The spokeswoman said witnesses had told authorities the pair had died trapped in the plane as it was engulfed by flames.

Investigations will begin into the crash on Thursday night and continue Friday.

Two people have died in an ultra-light plane crash north of the Sunshine Coast today.

The man and woman were killed after the aircraft clipped trees, crashed and cartwheeled into a housing estate moments after take-off, Queensland Fire authorities said.

Witnesses at the scene told authorities the pair were alive when the plane crashed but died in the subsequent fire, though this has not been confirmed.

"It was taking off, it had cleared some trees and then it came back down again," a Queensland Fire spokesperson said.

"It was an Allegro ultra-light plane.

"It had been cleared to take-off to get to Bundaberg before dark."

The plane crashed on a footpath about 50m from a house in the Pacific Haven housing estate.

Police and emergency services were contacted about 5.15pm and arrived to find the plane engulfed in flames.

"We are still there laying out foam blankets, because of the fuel,'' the spokesperson said.

"There will be investigations tomorrow."

The pair, from central Queensland, have not yet been publicly identified.

A police spokeswoman said their families were being told tonight.

Chief pilot of Air Fraser at nearby Hervey Bay, Gary Geltch, said the accident happened at Pacific Haven Air Park, situated on the Cherwell River, south of Bundaberg.

He said the air park was privately owned ``like a marina'', where people bought blocks of land beside the airstrip.

"The airstrip is about 1100 metres long,'' he said.

``They buy blocks of land beside the airstrip and fly their ultra-lights to and from their workplace.

It is indeed a very sad day when we lose our fellow aviators.

I just heard a TV report say that the aircraft was from Mackay. There was almost nothing left.

Sad day indeed

It is truely a sad day for the area and very close to home for alot of us here. Even closer for some. It will have a profound effect on the morale of the local flyers. Pacific Haven is a spectacular meticulously maintained private airport and the home to many highly skilled aviators.

Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased and their new friends in the area and all that witnessed the accident happen.
