Rock n Roll!

I've always been interested in planes, amazing beautiful pieces of machinery!

I've been looking for somewhere to ask lots annoying questions which probably don't have an appropriate category :-p Hopefully I won't be too much of a nuisance! But I'm looking forward to talking with fellow enthusiasts :)

I'm interested in the practicalities of flying planes in general, and the basic physics behind it. I have a background in programming, and have a long term ambition of making a (vastly over-simplified) game-like 3d physics simulation of flying a model plane, ultimately to add circuitry to a model that can do things like take off and land automatically. Yes, this may take me decades lol!!! Truthfully, I don't expect to be successful but hey, it's a challenge! :-)

Thank you for taking me on board!

Lots of info if you Google for it. There are competitions held for groups (usually Uni students etc.) who can build a small plane and have it fly unassisted to a given location and drop a package. It think that would be great fun to be involved in. Where I work we do similar things, but the package goes bang. I was involved sometime back, using OpenGL to develope a simple 3D visualisation of the track taken by an 'aircraft'. Was pretty cool then but primitive by todays standards. Have fun, time is running out.....

Guest Maj Millard

We are mostly Australian here so we will have to call you Jodsey

Or the Jodster !....

jodster, why don't you go out and try the the real thing. I'm sure there is someone around who can introduce you to the joys of real flight... And of course the view is a whole lot better than looking at a flat LCD screen..not half as dangerous or unsafe as you may believe if you choose correctly...............................................the Maj....024_cool.gif.7a88a3168ebd868f5549631161e2b369.gif

The best way I had flight explained in simple terms before I understood it was. "Think. Of it like this, if you put 400kmh winds against anything it will "fly" all we do is control the direction" took a fair bit of the magic and trickery out of it.
