RV 4 on RA Aus registration - any

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I asked the question in another Thread about RV4's going on RAAus registration.

One or two replies included some photos and detail on RV4's that have been converted with seats etc removed.

One aircraft in particular was featured on the covered of Sport Pilot.

I'm keen to make contact with anyone who has or knows of owners whom have gone down this path.080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

Thinking of buying an RV4 and doing just this..080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

Privacy prohibits me from just going on the RAaus site and looking up owners as the registration is not found as easily as the GA aircraft - simply type in a VH registration and the owners details come up.

Anyway to protect the guilty and innocent it would be easiest to respond here and email me any details on registrations and owners whom have placed the RV4 on.

[email protected]

Thanks guys in anticipation:cheezy grin:

I've seen at least ONE with a Rotax 912 fitted. The airframe is built particularly light and the skin as rather thin and has to be riveted carefully, as you would expect. Can't recall the type of RV it was. Easy to find out. Nev

There is an RV designed for the Rotax The RV12 I think. It would have to be a very light RV4 to be able to fly with a 912. Minimum empty weight would be under 1000lbs. Mine was 1022 lbs and with a 160hp Lycoming it goes up like a rocket, but I don't think a 912 would be anywhere near safe..Looking at my aircraft, to go to single seat with no changes would give a usable load of 300lbs or 136kg. Full fuel is 120 litres or 84kg, which doesn't leave much for the pilot. Removing the rear seat would save about 7kg I would guess.

If you are a lightweight and happy to go with reduced fuel the RV4 would be alovely plane to fly.

If you are looking for great plane to fly, single seat and very similar to the RV4, have a look at the Corby Starlet. If you are ever in Central Qld. Come to Rodds Bay and you can look at the RV4 and the Corby together. I fly both.

If you do, remember that you either won't have a rear seat, or if you do, it will have no / or only partial controls. Even a GA registered model usually has no rear seat rudder pedals.

No fully functioning dual controls = no dual instruction allowable in the aircraft.

Get your tailwheel endo on something else, and then at BFR time - look for an instructor who is prepared to signoff on a 'single seat' review. Many won't, and for good reason.

cheers,
