what who is to blame

A waterbombing pilot fighting a NSW blaze was killed after his plane's left wing broke off mid-flight as a result of cracking and corrosion that was missed during an "inadequate" safety inspection about 11 weeks earlier, an inquest has found.

Father-of-three David Black, 43, died when his aircraft crashed in the mountainous Budawang National Park, in the state's south, on October 24, 2013.

Deputy State Coroner Derek Lee found on Monday that an August 2013 inspection of the plane used an unauthorised method and did not comply with the mandatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Cracking and corrosion was present but was not detected, partly because the wings were not removed during the inspection, Mr Lee wrote in his findings.
