Who shot down the Red Baron -

I did - a few years back I had one of those shoot-em up flying games on my first computer, a 386 pre windows machine - I regularly shot down the Red Baron.

Carnt remember what the name of the game was now but I am thinking of getting a new flying game for my computer. I'm wondering if anybody can recomend a good one - no jets, just WW1 or WW2 will do.

HPD – I will go along with the Il2 recommendation but get the name right.

Initially the programme was Il2 Sturmovic but was upgraded to Il2 Forgotten Battles and was primarily about the German/Russian Eastern Front WW2 conflict.

The programme has been steadily expanded over the last few years and has a huge array of types in it – many of them very rare or little known. The flight models are very good and some are quite sobering to “fly†while others are docile enough to use as actual flying trainers. I ran an on line flying school for WTE and built my own on line training base for the purpose.

The detail is fantastic and UbiSoft do not introduce any new type unless it is absolutely correct down to the last detail and all systems/instruments work real time.

What is not commonly realised is that while there is a huge array of “flyable†types there is a method of getting hold of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) types as well and flying them. This can only be done from “outside†(There is no internal cockpit detail) but does allow you to get your hands on monsters like the the Heinkel He111z five engined Zwilling and the six engined Me232 Gigant.

Flying the multi engined aircraft on “full systems†can be very exacting and you need good keyboard skills and currency as you have full independent control over every engine.

During the evolution of the simulator (I would not call it a “game†any longer) there have been steady upgrades and expansion packs that saw map and campaign areas expand to Europe and UK and a consequent increase in types. Japanese types were also introduced quite early.

A massive user generated support industry also came into being from which you can get various specialist campaigns, different camouflage skins and markings etc.

UbiSoft also produced a sister game to cover the Pacific Theatre (carrier based aircraft etc) and I believe this can be bolted to the initial Forgotten Battles and the two become one huge historical portrayal of WW2.

If you are a WW2 buff then you need go no further than this programme as it can be used at a very basic “shoot em up†level to totally accurate operation of the flyable aircraft types.

All of the base programmes are available on Ebay quite cheaply these days. If you want to take a look at it I am putting it back on my computer and/or loan you a copy of the original Il2 to take a look at. Drop in again in the chopper if you like - the paddock is still clear.

c/s was CAVOK. I was part of the Nexus, commanded the training wing and was second in command of the bomber wing.

I did not see eye to eye with Tigger so moved on! I have, and want, no contact with the group now.

Biggles, I use a Saitek EVO Force Feedback. The reason is that this joystick is easily used by unscrewing and turning the hand rest for left hand use. This means that as most ultralights are controlled by the left hand you get a better feel for what it is like - just my thoughts!

Baphomet: I suppose the place could not stand the death of Nighthawk as Ozwolf was already on the way out and that just left Tigger – who had no management capability at all. Kimba was politically knifed and took her entire group to another server with myself concurrently leaving in protest. That would not have left much to run the place.

Sad really because there were good guys there. I got on with Sikshooter well, Mauler and Macka etc.

I still have a copy of CFA V6 AI (the last version of the training set up I built). This loads into even the basic version of Forgotten Battles and gives access (and instructions) on accessing all of the AI aircraft (including the flying boats) as well as the regular aircraft.

This emails fine (it is not very big as it uses the existing game engine) so you can have a copy if you wish and want to PM me an email address.

I may get another thread going to give some information about on-line gaming. May be of interest to folks.

T.
