  1. The Apple OS is identical across all apple devices, so once an app is written, it will work on all devices with that OS. Android OS is different across different devices, so a separate app has to be written for each type of device. hence, not many app companies will develop a complex app for many different OS's for different devices running Android. the app would then be far to expensive.

Huh? That's not right. The APK packaging handles the ABI / API spectrum reasonably well (I've not yet had a problem) and the design of the presentation API handles things like layout, etc, well enough that it is not a concern.

  2. All this talk of not having a choice of landing in the street in a Sailplane... I thought the first principle of being a good Sailplane pilot was always being ready to carr y out a safe out landing?I reckon he made a mistake, and then I guess he made up for it by walking away from what was a no options high speed and desperate landing in a fairly congested area. Luckily there were no pedestrians on the footpath.

    IMO

As you say this pilot made his mistake probably about half an hour before he landed and flew himself into a corner. Our training is that a road are not a landing option. Having said that we did have one of our pilots land on a Haulpak road. :)

Please correct me if I am wrong but what you are saying is a way to have your mobile phone, of varying sizes, strapped around your thigh like kneeboards are...is that right?

Yes, that is what I'm saying. As I said above I understand the number of different Android phone shapes does cause a real problem. I don't know if such a product even exists

.Looking at your iPad product it looks big. I doubt whether I would fit in the cockpit with than on.

  4. What kind of Android devices?

Ahhh, that's the question, isn't it. :) Unlike the Apple devices there are a prolifera of Android devices having different shapes, etc. This makes it difficult for the retailer and I understand that. So let me tell you what I have now and that may serve as a guide.

I use a Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone as my Android device. Anything larger is just too unwieldly for a knee board. In any case the display is about 300mm from my eye so nothing larger is needed.

The knee board I use now is one I made myself by taking a "universal" holder and bolting it to a plain knee board. This works fine but is a big bulkier than I like, mainly because of the universal holder. I bought the parts from an overseas supplier - I won't give the links here. If a better purpose built product was available I would be interested. And, of course, I always prefer to do business with an Australian retailer when ever possible.

I hope that gives you some ideas.

  5. I have just installed XCSoar on a Recreational Flying GPS and it works great, especially being free. Once I set XCSoar to use the GPS on Port 1 it picked up the GPS really quickly, actually a lot faster then OziExplorer. I like the idea of being able to create your own charts using the XCSoar Chart Generator. The other BIG plus is the Terrain Warning that you can get with it, something that OziExplorer doesn't have and the Terrain Warning would be great to have on the Recreational Flying GPS.Can anyone post images of how they have set XCSoar up?

Even though it is for Gliding, from what I can see with just a little play it is just as good for all recreational aircraft...and free as well!

Is your satisfaction with XCSoar a comment on the reliability of the Jabiru engine? 037_yikes.gif.f44636559f7f2c4c52637b7ff2322907.gif

I'm not sure how you interpret the Terrain Warning in a power aircraft.

  6. Hi It's version 5.2.2. A mate placed on the mio 360 for me. He's out of town now so I will have to research how to get in the mio. Weather is usually getty better after Winter up here. They usually run the Qld state comp the following week so planned to be in a good part of the season. I last flew at easter so will get down to the gliding club twice before the Sept week. It will be fun and good all over even if I don't acheive 300km this time. Would like to do it in the Blanik for the challenge. Where are you located and what type do you fly?Cheers

    Mike

I'm located at Narrogin Gliding Club. It is down in the SW corner of WA. The real soaring weather starts in Oct. or Nov.

I just fly the club gliders - hence XCSoar on the phone. If I had my own I would put XCSoar on an Android tablet and hook up things like airspeed etc.

The club has a couple of Puchs and a DG 500 as twins. Our singles are a couple of Astir CS-77s and a Jantar 2.

  7. Hi are you using the program? I have a early version that I run on a Mio 360 so I'll try and load the current version onto it. I taking a Blanik to the Queensland cross country coaching in Late September so the new program should be good to have. I will be hoping to do a 300 km in the Blanik if the weather etrc is kind. Cheers Mike

Sure. I use it on an Android phone (Samsung Galaxy Nexus). How old is your current version?

Good luck with the 300 km. What's the weather usually like in Qld in Sept.?
