  1. Yes you are quite correct about the 5 hrs solo to certificate,,,it,s the ******** hours after that ,that greedy cfi,s convince newbies that they are ""required to do in the schools 2 seater with an instructor sitting next to him twiddling his thumbs counting the dollars in his mind that are NOT a requirement of RAA op manual

I'm a little disturbed by this statement as I know there are some greedy ones but you must realise that when someone goes solo they get slack and pick up bad habits and they need to be corrected ! 5 hours solo can not be done in a block without any instruction or checking as the student may get in trouble with bad habits !

It is a requirement of RAA ! as the student has to show competence ! A lot of miss information is being put up here ! Read the ops manual and especially the duties of CFI, student syllabus and training requirements !

  3. I’ve just deleted and re written my reply as I have just done some research on how your system works and my reply wasn’t quite right. Everything I wrote above is more applicable only to a constant speed system as I understand it now.

As I understand your in flight adjustable system now, I believe that in some ways it works like a fixed pitch, and as fact hunter says just like in a car, as your speed increases your rpm will also increase so as this is happening, that would be when it is appropriate to coarsen your prop so that the rpm sits at the appropriate range.

I admit to knowing little about what settings you should use, so if rotax suggests 5300 then that would be the best advice to follow. The main point to take out of all of this would be to make sure that if you need to increase power to begin a climb, increase the pitch on the prop before adding power, and reverse if you are reducing power, make sure you do power before prop.

Hi, not saying your wrong but from first hand experience, from cruise to commence a climb I would power up first adjust attitude and climb then as load increases adjust prop finer ! If I did it the other way I could over rev and slow the plane down as well prior to climb ! Just my opinion from experience ! I have used IFA and CSU and prefer IFA !

  4. Now I'm thinking I should replace the exhaust valves in my 600 hour engine. But it does run fairly cool these days, with 160 C being the max on climb and 140 on cruise. This is in contrast to a Lancair I know, where 190C is commonplace. And I have the small flywheel bolts which are also a worry, so I make very sure that the prop is not hammering on its bolts, and chech this out by using blobs of nail-paint between the driver flange and the prop hub, any cracking of this paint could indicate hammering I think.

I did a full top overhaul at 350hours on Gen 2 3300 because of low leak down, a pass but low, it had stuck rings, I'm very glad I did it, I also converted to hollow push rods, it cost just as much to convert to hollow push rods as the top overhaul kit so I spent twice as much as I could have and spent more than required as it only needed a set of rings, I believe the engine was overheated long before I owned it, the engine now has new valves, double valve springs, hard valve washers, hollow push rods and rockers, high leak down lifters, valve relief pistons, new rubber dampened through bolts, new flywheel bolts with star washers and all the rest of the top overhaul stuff !

So there are definite improvents made and the engine now gives me some peace of mind as to its reliability, the hollow push rods was probably overkill but I still wanted it ! The engine has done twenty hours and does not burn or use oil and runs fine. Most of the new parts are a big improvement including valves and pistons, my opinion and experience, just sharing and giving my two bobs worth !

  5. In 2005 or 2006 a pilot of a C337 made two seperate wheels up landings in northern WA whilst doing fish spotting as I was there and remembering reading these in crash comics in same edition same pilot in two accidents, same problem, ! Don't know if related but its not something you should do twice !

  6. Well frankly I suspect he would be offended by what your posting about him, however you seem to give very little consideration to that.Who I work for is irrelevant, I am commenting on my own behalf and in no way representing my employer.

Have you got any evidence he used a friend to stop an investigation? Or is this another unfounded hearsay?

I’m sure he has a great deal of regard for checking, however he made what is called an error. It turns out that in 9000 hours of flying you will make some of them. Yes I would have exactly the same attitude if it was a fully loaded 747. As a matter of fact an Ansett crew did something like that at Sydney. Rather than attacking the person it makes much more sense to investigate the why and work on more effective defenses.

Thanks for your reply Ian ! You obviously know a little about the Pelair crash ! What's your opinion of that ?

I'm not discriminating against you for who you work for ! I feel wheels up and the second time and the circumstances are not good ! My opinion ! To have the head of Casa on board and try make it trivial is not good !

I've had a VCA and my situation showed the controller had made a mistake ! A big one and I let it go ! I also had controllers in Canberrra save my bacon ! Very impressed and apppreciative !

  7. Im not trying to come across as rude Camel, and I don't know the guy or his story but if his first wheels up was truly because of a nosewheel that failed to extend, you cant really have a go at him for the first one...But you know what, I would go fly with him tomorrow because he self reported it like you are meant to, was honest enough to admit the distraction was caused by his phone and not try and make up some other excuse. Also while 'banning yourself from using your phone again' may seem a little light on the corrective side, to be honest what else are you meant to do as a fix?

You can fly with him I won't because the phone part is negligible ! A checklist or a memory check is just that ! I tell people if disturbed during a check start again !

The first wheels up was in Karratha, see seven news !

I'm not hunting this guy but second one with DC aboard and if it was a 747 tell me you think it would be ok ! He has 9000 hours ! Does he do checks or not ?

  8. I’m glad camel is so flawless and immune to error, for most people we are susceptible to many human factors that can cause routine checks to be missed. For many thousands of landings this guy has got the gear down correctly. Undoubtedly this was not his finest night flying, but rather than hanging him in the town square as camel wants to I would suggest we actually all try and learn from the mistake and try not to make it ourselves.Camel, do you have a personal problem with this guy? You are going after him very viciously with absolutely no knowledge of the actual facts of the incident. Everybody on this forum likes to complain how viciously CASA goes after people but there are people on here who make CASA look gentle and forgiving.

Dear Mr Ian , I'm obviously offended by your commment ! I know you work for ASA ! I've met very good ones ! You are unknown and offensive ! The pilot is guilty of two wheels up landings ! He used a friend to stop an investigation on a second incident ! The first incident isn't finished yet ! I heard of another C337 pilot before doing two in the same crash comics in WA some years ago ! It clearly shows poor airmanship ! I do not know this man but find it very sad he has no regard for checking ! Would you have the same attitude if he landed a 747 fulll of people with wheels up ? Please answer !

  9. Wow Camel you are being extremely harsh on this gentlemans flying ability.... do you have a personal issue with the guy?He wont be the first, and he wont be the last person to ever do a wheels up, and if you do any study into human factors you will quickly realise that the mistake is a lot easier to make then you might realise (no I have not done it).

Distraction is often a dangerous thing that can very easily happen to even the best of us. When was the last time you made a slight error in the cockpit? If you really do teach people then I am surprised you have not seen how easy it is for people to miss things when they are under the pump or distracted by something the brain deems to be more important at the time.

    Give the guy a break.

Two wheels up landings is not just a minor error ! You are rude and very forgiving of a commmercial pilot with 9000 hours ! Commercial pilots are taught discipline ! Private pilotes are taught disapline ! Commmercial pilots are meant to have a very high experience and disapline ! Two of the same mistakes is not good !

You give him a break and you fly with him ! I wouldn't for all the tea in China !

  10. I think like OME said having the atsb investigate an equipment failure is understandable but why on earth would you expect them to investigate something that is so obviously pilot induced? As it is the atsb doesn't have enough resources to investigate all our Raa fatals so why would we even wish them to investigate something so obvious?

Because the commercial pilot operating is not competent ! Please bear in mind I still use and teach BUMFISH for RAA pilots BRAKES, UNDERCARRIAGE, MIXTURE, FUEL, INSTRUMENT, SWITCHES, HATCHES & HARNESSES ! Done for a reason ! Generic landing checks for all ! In case you fly a retractable ! Don't forget this guy has 9000 hours and is commercial ! A private pilot would be diffferent ! Just a mistake ! A professional should do routine checks blindfolded !

  11. Having a mobile phone connected through the intercom might be convenient but part of the landing checklist should be "phone mute or phone off". If this is the second of these for this pilot he obviously doesn't take too much effort to check he's got 3 greens before landing. He might have 9000 hours but complacency seems to be an issue here.

Would appear he does not use checklists or does not do any checks! I would not fly with him nor would I expect anyone else to want to ! Casa should be protecting the public ! Is this an example ! The head guy thinks he is a good pilot !

  12. Maybe you haven't looked back far enough; there are many of them; what's to investigate when the pilot's admitted he was using his phone and forgot to put the gear down? You might like to check the Self Reporting policy.

You only die once in a crash ! This is a second gear up landing ! He is commercial ! Does he do checks ! Obviously not now and not before ! The phone is not the main issue ! The mistake is also just a mistake but being the second is a little much ! Being a friend to D.C is a bit strange for first gear up to be investigated and this one not ! Excuse me for being a little slow in checking self reporting ! He should report he does no landing checks because it interferes in his social life ! Please ! Is his memory up to speed ?

  13. Did you bother to notice that was the second gear up landing and they had not finished investigating the last one ! Why investigate the last one and not this one !

It’s very obvious if you listen to seven news interview or read the newspaper article !

So what caused the mishap ? failure to put wheels down ! That’s quite a significant mistake showing failure to check ! He is commercial not private !

    Big difference !

Should have banned himself from gear up landings not just phone calls !

  14. 'Wheels-up' landing puts air safety minister's flight in peril

    www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/wheelsup-landing-puts-air-safety-ministers-flight-in-peril/news-story/121e31aa70ad1cc1e45e4fc8dd9b5502

6 hours ago ... The cabinet minister responsible for air safety was involved in a “wheels-up” landing after the pilot became distracted by a mobile phone and failed to lower the landing gear, in what the regulator dubbed a “serious incident”. Transport Minister Darren Chester was travelling in the back seat of the light plane ...
