  1. Most light aircraft comps in GA (such as those run by the RFACA) include spot landing comps which are fun - and have variations including glide approaches. Basically they set up a string fence across the runway and then have marked touchdown points at 10 metre intervals with varying score for where you touch down. In these comps they always have someone in the plane checking that you follow proper procedure. The total points for the event is a combination of the inflight stuff ( checklists, heights, speeds, etc) and the score on the touchdown. Its great practice.

  2. was there a Zero there? after arriving back at Cessnock after a local flight, i was overtaken by a Zero at about 300 ft Sounded and looked Brilliant. for a moment there i could have been at pearl harbour!edit, just looked at the attachments, yep, the Zero was there, and Miss fire... both stunning aircraft. they sounded brilliant on arrival at YCNK this afternoon

I have seen the "Zero" a number of times, my understanding is it is a converted AT6 / Harvard. They did a number for the Tora Tora Tora film - not sure if it is one of those.

  3. Yes - I liked the VH-ABC rego - would be worth a bit if they are tradeable !! - the Auster was VH-BTE - both seem to be registered in the same family altrhough different individuals. Seems a shame to have them sitting there gathering dust - plenty of space for one in my shed !!

  4. Looks interesting !! Wonder how quickly it gets airborne on water. Must be a bit of a worry landing in choppy water.

On another subject I noticed in one of the hangers a Tiger Moth and an Auster - do they ever fly ? They look somewhat dusty.

  5. I was busily mowing our lawns under the circuit area of The Oaks yesterday. There was an unusual aircraft flying over - a biplane. From the ground it looked sort of like an amphibian. Any of The Oaks flyers care to fill me in ? Went for a drive down to the field later on but it was no longer there. ...Ian

  6. From my experience with taildraggers I think there are two critical points. One is knowing the three point attitude for the aircraft - sit in it on the ground for a while as has been suggested. The other is to get the approach numbers correct for the aircraft - approach too fast and it all becomes ugly !!

  7. Thanks Arthur - so the Lightwing can carry me, instructor and fuel ? I was thinking after visiting the airfield a couple of times that there were not any suitable aircraft there that I could legally train in with two people !! Certainly the small Jabiru's with the 430KG MTOW don't work.

FYI - you probably use my property as a landmark in the circuit - we have the pine forest where a lot of aircraft turn base for runway 36 !!

  8. Hi Folks, I have been reading the forum for a few weeks now and thought I had better do the right thing and introduce myself.

I have been flying GA for about 20 years - most types from C152 through to light twins. I also like vintage aircraft such as Tiger Moth and Chipmunk which I fly when I can. My other love is formation flying.

We live under the circuit of The Oaks airfield so I have been thinking for a while of doing some RA flying and have visited the local school to talk to them about it.

One concern I have always had about this small end of the flying scene is that I am 6'3" and 105kgs so I need to work out what I can actually fit in.

This forum is really good - hats off to those who organise it. ..... Ian
