  1. Very interesting Nev, something which I should discuss with my instructor. With my experience the other day I thought of discussing with my instructor of various points that I can execute the go around. Say like I am almost there to touch down but a gust of x wind come through ????. Cheers,
  2. Thanks all. Sharing the feelings with others - specially who knows the situation better - really makes feel better. I am really sorry for not mentioning it is not my first solo, though I have very little solo experience - about 1.5hrs. I will assume all the first solo congrats in this post as for my original first solo experience with all of your permissions. Thank you all again. Cheers, Pradeep
  3. Today I had my solo circuit flight and there was a bit of headwind. On the first occasion I was not able to bring the plane so went around. On second landing I did a high flare and landed a bit heavy. I realized that it was a bit high but as it was not 'bumping' landing I thought it should be within the limits. But my instructor asked me to make a full stop on next circuit and which was perfect landing. I am very unhappy and feeling bad with my high landing and specially not happy at all with not recognizing the high flare and do a go around. Just thought of writing this post to cheer myself up. pradeep.
  4. Thanks all, Yes, it is the best feeling ever, I couldn't wait 'till I get the next opportunity. The feeling is getting multiplied when I share with you all. Thanks again, regards, pradeep
  5. Hello All, I completed my first circuit solo today. It took a fair while to take that smile off from my face. Thanks very much Brad for the confidence you had on me to send me on my first solo. regards, pradeep
  6. Cosmick, It is totally legal to share one of your mates' original digital WAC (not a copy) for your journey. Either he can sell it to you if he don't need it anymore or you can return that to him for his use after your journey. Hope this helps, Cheers,
  7. Legally, first question will be whether you are allowed (terms and conditions) to make soft copies of the paper maps. If yes then there is no legal issues in making soft copies of the maps either for you (from your purchased maps) or for your mate, as far as he is the purchaser (even for a fee for your scanning work). If the maps are pXXXXXted from copying, then it is not legal to make soft copies. If there is nothing stated regarding the copying in the original purchase then it is up to the law to decide whether the copying is legal or not, usually in this case the law will be looking from a point of view of a third person. The most probable outcome will be: if you make a copy from your purchased copy for your personal use then it will be not illegal. I would say even giving it to a single person for free won't be not illegal. But if you give a large number of copies either free or for a fee will be illegal, because all will stop buying from the original author. Disclaimer: The above comment is my personal opinion only not a legal advice. hehe.. ;-)
  8. ianboag, I was trying to figure out 2 things: 1. Some copyrights don't allow to copy, reproduce, store in any other format. If that is the case then if I scan and put into my moov that is a violation. (however I think this is overlooked by the copyright owner if for personal use, but not sure though.) Even though you are only selling your skills in making digital copy of the original for the owner you must aware of the original copyright conditions. Selling skills are only allowed as far as you are not violating any other laws in relation to the works you are involved with. Well I am only presuming here, maybe this is a discussion for lawyers in legal terms. EDIT: Sorry you already said this above. 2. Is there any other resources publicly available that we can use for navigation? cheers,
  9. Answering my own question(?!): From Google copyright information: 2. Restrictions on Use. Unless you have received prior written authorization from Google (or, as applicable, from the provider of particular Content), you must not: (b) copy, translate, modify, or make derivative works of the Content or any part thereof; Cheers,
  10. Most of the books (printed materials) are copyrighted in a way that you can't reproduce in any format without the author's / publisher's consent (except for reference / academic purpose). On the other hand software copyrights are basically you can use only one copy at a time (like reading a book, only one person can read the book at any given time). I personally think ASA wouldn't have any issues if I convert my hard copy into another format and use one format at a time, but would worry if I started to giveaway multiple copies to others ( basically i am interrupting their business). But what will be the case with the google maps. As they are free to view by anyone on the net, if I convert a portion of google map into another format and post it on this forum how that will stand re the copyrights issues (If I do that will it be really useful for aviation). Cheers,
  11. Hi Cosmick, When I saw this news I was thinking is it OK (legal wise) to share our copies of WAC's with each other if required or in this forum. If I converted any maps using OziExplorer and post it in this forum is it legal or am I breaking the law? I really like the idea of sharing things that I can share with others, like open source. Regards,
  12. Hi Upthere, I got my Moov 370 yesterday and spent lots of time to figure out why it isn't reading/showing the SD card on XP (on linux it showed the card but didn't open it). After several hours of struggle I ended up in copying the files to the (flash) rom itself. It was a risk I prepared to take, if something goes wrong you may end up with a brick, luckily I was managed to unlock it. Now everything works fine. But some extra steps need to be taken, like you have to select the Moov mode to connect to usb and so on. But overall I am happy. I can post you what I did to unlock, if you want, but remember these are not risk free, it worked for me and hope it will work for you too. Regards,
  13. I joined the show a bit later around 10.20, but able to figure out what happened. The demo on supercooled water is a first time for me too. I believe once we got used to something then it becomes very hard to change that habit - autopilot. My understanding is they would have done the stall recoveries in their early flight trainings (like we do now) but unless they practice it every now and then it is very unlikely that they will recover from a stall that quick in reality. Most of the things we do are coming from practice, sometimes even without thinking we tend to do that we used to do. I used to press the brake when drive automatic gear cars. I think it's not a bad idea to atleast re practice the critical events in a simulator every year or so. Cheers,
  14. Darky, Android is based on linux kernel. As a (100%) linux user at home for the past 3 years and active linux user for the past 13 years, I see lots of improvements in available programs for linux OS's. But compared with windows it's almost next to nothing. Programming for linux is a bit harder than programming for windows. This makes very difficult to port specialised programs to linux. Even with most of the companies migrating to linux it will take a fair bit of time for us to see some programs developed for Android and linux. If you are using the phone for normal stuff it should be OK, but the time you are looking for specialised software you will find it very difficult. All the very best for your new purchase anyway. Cheers,
  15. jcamp, when i read your post I recalled something... Sometime back I did an online IQ test with some results (couldn't remember what was my IQ). The outcome I got from this test was how do I absorb information. Basically I am (or atleast my brain is) a visual information processing person, means I will grab and process and remember information much better and quicker if the information is provided in a diagram (illustrated?) than if I had to read through the information. This helped me in deciding what kind of books I need to buy for my studies (I love those colored new BAK book and VFR guides). If I had to read through I draw up the summary of the contents to make it easy. Hope this helps someone. Cheers,
  16. I did my Pre-solo circuit exam today and got through it. I know it is only a vary small part of the total exams and I have a long way to go. I will see how I am going with my Pre-solo area and figure out my position in self learning. As you all said above it depends on the dedication and self discipline I think. Thanks with regards, pradeep
  17. Hi all, So far my planning is to get the practical training through the training center and self study the theory for the exams (pre-solo, BAK) - due to financial reasons. I am wondering whether this is advisable. i_dunno I have no hurry in getting my license (though i am naturally a 'couldn't wait till that get done' guy). Please don't take the following information wrong, this is only to let you know what is my stance in relation to technical details: I am a civil engineer. P.S: I have 2 kids under 5. :hittinghead: Thanks in advance cheers,
  18. Congrats Owi.. Couldn't agree more.... Paul, I had the same problem when I got my first job in Aus (Deniliquin) where vehicles equipped with hands free mobile phone kit. During my early couple of months I used to go with my manager for site visits, whenever he was answering calls through hands-free I was amazed to see how he did understand the voice over the hands-free (this was within my first 3 months in Australia, I had no idea of 'Aussie' accent) But now it's like a magic that how far I have come through in my communications. I hope I will pickup the same with the aviation R/T. Thank you all, your replies really relaxed me on my R/T 'understanding other call'. I feel fortunate to have such a wonderful forum, looking at the replies, how friendly and encouraging you all are...Thanks very much. Cheers,
  19. Sometimes I do this after talking I will do this next time as most of my sessions are in the early mornings ( I can't wait to see my FI's reaction to this). :raise_eyebrow: cheers
  20. Thanks Pud, actually when I was writing my first post I determined to do my radio calls as clearly as possible. I believe safety is paramount regardless of how good and fast I am in English or not. As I was doing the radio calls these days, at least I am happy that the other pilot did understand my calls. Deskpilot, you are ‘spot on‘ on missing the call signs. That was my first worry actually, if I miss the call sign, how can I ask the pilot to repeat what his intentions are. Thanks very much for the info. I think that I must remember that even though I am repeating the call sign for the hundredth time it may be the first time the other pilot is listening to, so regardless of how many times I am repeating I will always be clear on my calls. Cheers
  21. Hi all, As you may already know I am student pilot with only about 14hrs on book. When I went through some of the (forum) discussions I found that pilots of other language origins either don't understand R/T communications from English origin pilots or their language is hard to understand by other English origin pilots (here I am only referring to the 'first language' as 'origin'). Yesterday when I was doing my cicuits with my instructor another pilot was calling ours and gave some info about his locations, I couldn't remember how much I did understand on this, but I was not overly concerned about that as my FI was wih me. I was not sure whether I didn't understand this because I was mostly concerned on my landing than on the communications (still a nervous student who wants to get the plane down on the runway.) or due to my language limitations. Although English is my third language I have no problem in communicating with others - job wise or socially - either face to face or over the phone, but would like to know whether other English origin traning pilots too had this issue, if not i will take some time to listen to the comminications on the CTAF till i get used to it. Thanks very much.
  22. I totally agree with you Darky, I like to learn the way it was intended to, yes it is hard to learn but once learnt you get much more satisfaction. But that's only me, may be this is why I still like to drive a manual, and wanted my wife to learn a manual too. I think I am talking too much... :-) cheers.
  23. Yes I noticed this is an old thred, but couldn't resist a reply as I am in the situation as was Darky on landing (and I didn't want to start a new thred on this). After several attempts of mis-landing(?), I am improving now - I think. As one of your posts said a 'feeling' to 'take action' was one of the thing that I found on flare. I still (re)act on the feeling of the runway and the environment, but i would say the actual touch down is a more cordinated action - at least I think so and I am doing so. For all those who have posted on this thread thank you for all your comments and encouragement. I don't know whether it is only me - I ususally 'mind train' the parts of flight which I didn't get on the first place and I couldn't wait until I try and see whether that worked or not (most of the time I couldn't sleep as my mind always on the traninig and eager to test). When it works that is the most exciting thing for me and usually make me confident. Thank you all. PS: The Flight training Handbook from FAA is really useful and helping me in several ways ti understand the proper flying apart from my FI. cheers, pradeep
  24. Hi all, Is there anyone from Shepparton I can borrow a 'helicopter to GA' adaptor. Currently I have an adaptor which squeals during transmission, I would like to see whether this is from the headset or the converter. Thanks heaps. Kind regards, Pradeep
  25. Tonight I had the chance to check my headset. Wow what a performance. The volume was excellent and now I can hear my instructor very well. Tonight we did the stalls. pheeww finally back to normal... Thank you all for posting replies re my concerns. Now I am happy with my David Clark Headset with some modifications...! As a note: if you are using a headset impedance adopter first please check your headset's original impedance and make modifications to suit. Cheers, Pradeep
