  1. Ch7 said it was a homebuilt Cessna. Is that a new low in crash reporting?
  2. Is there a rough estimate of the cost of materials if built to plan? I know its hard to be excact due to fluctiating prices but a ball-park figure would be tops. Cheers
  3. Im no aeronautical engineer, but im sure the wings arent designed to be landed on. The crumpling wing might have just absorbed enough energy slowly to prevent any injury to the occupants. AND, ill leave my speculation there, good too see only the aircraft got hurt (and a powerline, some grass and probably some pride).
  4. Class G and D for the airport, Class E for the enroute when its lower limit is 8500. Not too worried about Class A and C.
  5. Hey all. I play flight sim, alot. Probably too much. Even when my missus asks me what I do on the computer until late at night and I answer "looking at porn" she says "bull, your playing flight sim again". So lately ive been getting into IFR stuff, downloading departure procedures and approach procedures and whatnot and trying to do things as good as I can with what little I know about IFR flight. My question is lets say your at a smallish airport with no published departure procedure. Lets take Narromine for instance; http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/aip/pending/dap/AeroProcChartsTOC.htm#N So, my questions are to the people in the know... 1. How bad does the weather have to be before your not allowed to take off, not when you think its unsafe but when the particular air law requires you to stay on the ground. Visibility and cloud base for instance. 2. If you do take off into cloud, what is the common procedure once you leave the runway? Climb to 500ft and then turn to the heading of your first leg? In the game you would usually switch to the area freq and ATC just tells you turn to x deg or continue your own navigation. 3. If you take off from an airport thats NOT on an intersection for low altitude airways (temora for exampe) whats the method to get on track quick? 4. Not so much a departure question, but if your flying along using the enroute charts is it normal to just tune into a nearby navaid thats as close to perpendicular to the flightpath as possible, measure the bearing from said navaid to your current airway and plot that into the map to get a fix? Obviously if your heading to or from a navaid that has DME then you can just measure the distance to/from that the dme is telling you. Or you could just cheat and use the gps but where is the fun in that. I know this thread should probably be in the Flight Sim threads but im unsure of just how many people read it. It may also seem confusing but thats because im going on what little I have read about IFR flight on the net and no actual bum in seat training in an aircraft with someone who is crazy enough to trust little mechanical dials with their lives. Im just trying to make my Flight simming as close to real as possible. Thanks!
  6. Hey all, is anyone willing to send me an origional copy of the aircraft.cfg for the 172 in FSX? I know i can just insert disk 1 and hit repair but i dont want it to repair all the other things ive modified that i like. I was screwing around with wing settings and forgot to back up the origional. This will teach me for forgetting to back stuff up....... Thanks.
  7. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/8499132/pilot-films-gliders-emergency-landing I dont know anything about gliding, except the fact there is no motor. So ill let the more qualified here comment on this. He survived so I guess you could say he did well.
  8. x2, I spoke to Alan at the last Natfly. If you need to know anything Zenith then he is the go-to man.
  9. ME! Might even have my certificate by then. For the record, I thought Natfly 2012 was good.
  10. This will be my first Natfly. Just got accomodation at lunch time time today, had to leave it a bit late because I didnt know if I had family commitments or not, and thanks to some arguing relatives I can definately attend. Ill be staying in Junee though, turns out if you wait too long Temora gets booked out. Nonetheless, Ill be there with bells on! See you all there.
  11. I want to know how much the guy who gets to stands right next the engine in the test tunnel at full thrust is being paid. Seriously though, one of the best vids ive seen on youtube, IMAX always has the best flicks.
  12. Im guessing its the Mk1 Diamond specs modded to suit 95.10? Where are you trimming 35kgs from? Suitable for your more husky sized man in both height and width? Some more specs would be nice, but you definately have my attention.
  13. Many moons ago as an army cadet at Singleton, we had 2 f-18s blast over our camp very low and very fast, all I had seen was 2 blurry gray triangles wizz past (cue x files music) and then barely had enough time to cover my ears. It was loud, it was awesome.
  14. That seems good for an engine and prop. And i also need to balance that cheap v reliable ratio as well. :)
  15. I will admit they are certainly sexy in the looks and perfermance department, but ill wait a few years until people have racked up lots of time on them before I run one. I like guinea pigs, dont want to be one though.
  16. Hey all, now that ive got the rough idea of the price of a scratch build airframe together, the next big step is the engine. Of course ive been through the new motor options, jab, cont, lyc, rotax, various auto conversions etc etc. Very expensive, but they are BRAND NEW so thats a given, if win lotto in the next 10 years then thats the most likely option ill go down. There are plenty of 2nd hand Lyc's and Continentals for sale over in the states (mostly barnstormers.com) at what seems to be a reasonable price for what you can get. Some comparatively cheap Rotaxes (rotaxii?) there as well. Has anyone here imported a motor from the States or similar? If so, who did you use to import the engine? Did anyone of repute inspect the engine before the deal was done? What else is there I should be looking for? Please dont turn this into an this engine v that engine debate as I havent made my mind up yet what I will use. This is another option im considering to keep the price down a little bit.
  17. Ok, you guys may or may not read cracked.com, but a great read decided to pop up that most here would definately enjoy. http://www.cracked.com/article_19330_8-wtf-aircraft-designs-that-actually-caught-air.html Read, enjoy, comment.
  18. 1. Cross country flying is what im aiming for. 2. Yes, 3. No. Most aircraft that have good range you wont be able to use with 2 people and some luggage anyway. 4. Kind of, if i build a ch650 to 544kg mtow I will loose 45kg of usefullness, so between those two, yes. 5. No, im not that worried about looks. Ive even considered a sonex (no offense to sonex owners), but the cabin seems a bit thin. 6. Because its the one aircraft ive managed to find plenty of info about and there are plenty flying around. And for the record its not the final choice, but its at the top of the list. If you have any other suggestions then im all ears.
  19. Mostly because the need for something that lands on a postage stamp doesnt exist right now. I would prefer a more comfortable cross country cruiser than a STOL. If my dreams come true and I end up buying a decent parcel of land out west in the future, then sure ill build one then because I will have a need. Right now its aerodrome to aerodrome. I like the idea of a 701, 750, savannah etc, dont get me wrong, but I just dont have a specific need for one at the moment.
  20. Like i said before, i wont know if i dont try. And if my skills as a fabricator fail me, there is the option of getting the kit parts individually. Im not expecting this to be easy, dont get me wrong. Im sure I will muck up a few bits here and there, thats the way it goes. If anything it will be easier to remake a part that is stuffed than wait 4 weeks ex us for a part from zenith. Find me a factory that doesnt make a few mistakes and throw out parts every now and then and i will be impressed. Thats why warranty exists. If you dont mind me asking, what are you building?
  21. I play golf already, so maybe it will need to be knitting or interpretive dance.
  22. Well, I wont know if I never try. That attitude is how i got into a plane in the first place.
  23. Boring...... I could just buy a factory one and have it shipped over, bolt the wings on and it would feel much the same. So no im not the slightest bit interested in a quick build. Plus if im going to be doing owner maintainence I would rather have intimate knowledge of every nut, bolt, rivet and bellcrank.
