Hi Compulsion So sad to hear that things went 'pear shaped'. Don't lose your faith in the RA experience, you will find there is more joy than sorrow. You will find that when you visit other aero clubs, attend Natfly and generally knock around with flyers, that they are all pretty much a great bunch. When I saw that you were purchasing the J170 I was excited for you as your reasons to purchase matched my thinking as well. There are other J170's out there for sale, just take the attitude that this deal was never meant to be for a reason. When you buy the one that you want you will look back and say "If that deal never fell through I wouldn't have this one". I continually trawl through the ads dreaming about the planes I wish I could afford and envy those that can afford them. Keep your chin up. Cheers Puddles

Hi Ian Eddie Maddern at Sportaviation in Tocumwal is an option. Eddie has a caravan park at the airstrip, operates 7 days per week. He has 2 Eurofox's. Hi Crayonbox, Just completed my Pilot Certificate and cross-country in the past couple of months. I found the books from the Dyson-Holland series were most relevant to the exams however book I keep returning to is the Jim Davis PPL. Throughout my journey I tried a few different publications and found what worked best for me. When I spoke to others they all had different favourites, however everyone who I contacted that had Jim Davis all loved it. In the end it is what will work best for you. Good Luck Puddles -

Thanks for the kind words guys. I have spent the last 12 months envying other forum members reaching their milestones so now it's good to have finally made it. EightyKnots, no float endorsement on the horizon. the next step is to find a rich uncle who will leave me his fortune so i can buy a plane of my own. Until then i guess the club plane is the go.

Hey Guys, Just completed my license today by passing my Cross Country. Also got signed off for rectractable undercarriage, in-flight adjustable prop (both of those a couple of weeks ago) and passenger endorsement as well. TIF was Feb last year, passed my Pilot Certificate 6 weeks ago at Echuca so it took a while but that was OK to spread the financial burden. Cross Country and other endorsements were done at Tocumwal. I am fortunate that the 2 CFI's I flew with were fantastic with lots of patients and plenty of knowledge to pass on. To those students out there, enjoy the journey, the more knowledge and experience you can soak up along the way is better in the long run. Cheers :happy:Puddles_7:teacher:

Hi Guys I am studying for my RAA exam - Human Factors. All I have is my Jim Davis book. It is a tremendous reference and was fine for my BAK but not sure whether it is good enough for Human Factors. Any suggestions, I hear the exam has changed recently so I need to be studying the most up to date info. Cheers Puddles

Neville Thanks for the interpretation, that helps. I don't have Bob Tait but I do have Jim Davis and can't find anything in there. I tried the link you sent but got lost once I went there :-) David Same link as Neville sent but the CASR Part 39 Chapter 10 was the extra step I needed. All the info I am after is there I appreciate that you both spent the time replying, I believe I don't need this onfo for my BAK but I do need it for my own benefit Cheers Puddles_7

Cheers CFICare Specifically the time/date eg: FROM 08 012028 TO 08 162200 EST But when I browse through other NOTAMS there are plenty of abreviations that mean nothing to me so I was hoping to find a website or publication that would explain it but I haven't found anything so far. Being a Student Pilot I want to make sure my knowledge is as good as I can make it.

Hi Bruce Great to receive some figures from a test run - good work much appreciated. The 50' obstacle is only an issue at the northern end (nort-south strip) so only comes into play with a head wind. Have had a j-160 land and take off OK. Cheers Puddles

Willbourne The Tecnam family (echo, golf & eaglet) would be great, as would the Sirius TL3000 but they are very rarely available 2nd hand and too expensive new. The Jabs are very competitive 2nd hand and there are always a few about for sale. If I could afford it Tecnams would be right new the top of the list.

Hi Gundy Probably is the best advice and most likely what I will end up doing but I want to explore all my opportunities first. I saw the new Sav at Natfly, the rounded fuselage is defintely an improvement on the old one as far as looks/sportiness goes.

Hey Guys I didn't realise that what I thought was a simple question would attract so much attention. I appreciate all your responses and discussions. There are a couple of Savannahs already housed at the strip and they have no trouble at all in any conditions with the strip length. I have nothing but admiration for the capabilities of the Sav's it s just that I am looking at all the possibilities available. At this stage I am looking for a plane that is a little more "Cessna like" in appearance but can still handle the short strip. The Jab is a good looking unit that is fine for new pilots, if there is anythin similar that will do the job I am glad to consider it. Puddles

Frank Thanks for the reply re Townsville and Ultralights. I live 2500Km away but have both my sons in T'ville, I usually manage 3 or 4 visits a year. We intend to retire up there. I have looked at property along the Woodstock-Guru road and noticed several private strips out there too. I have the VNC Maps for Townsville and have been curious about avoiding the flight steps and still stay above the terrain, heading west I guess you are much better off, Anthill Plains could be a challenge though. It is good to know there is plenty of Ultralight activity in the area so if and when we move I can look to make contact. I am currently living in a Dairying area where most properties are around 100Ha so airstrip size is limited, hence my query re the ability of the Jab to get in and out. Frank M Your question is still within the realms of the subject, I am learning in a J170 so any info I can gain from other's experience is good. A little off topic..... where in Townsville are Ultralights based, I am only aware of Woodstock but whenever I have been past it seems to be unoccupied. Cheers Puddles

Guys Thanks for all the prompt responses. Not much experience at this end, still learning so I appreciate the benefit of your experience and wisdom. I was doubtful that 400m would be adequate for conditions other than perfect for a Jab. Take-off I think is OK but landing could be an issue. Looks like I will need to re-think what I spend my hard earned dollar on. Do like the Jab though. Thanks Puddles

Hi Guys Considering purchasing a second hand Jab J170 and running from a farm strip. What length strip is realistic considering the Jabiru website quotes landing roll 168m and take-off roll as 210m. The strip I use is currently 400m. I am looking for answers based on experience. Cheers Puddles_7
