  1. ahlocks - now you're in trouble. 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gifEnergy Awareness and Energy Management [Ch. 1 of See How It Flies]

    See fig 1.2

    Energy conversion - Glide.

The 'Heat' in that image relates to what? The small amount of heat behind the gliding aircraft?

    Re-read section 1.1 Grasshopper :yin_yan:

1.1 Energy cannot be created or destroyed

the energy left behind in the air as the plane passes through, stirring the air and leaving it slightly warmer. ;)

Is there THAT much heat behind the aircraft?

I doubt it... unless the lift fairies are breathing heavy from all the effort. 040_nerd.gif.a6a4f823734c8b20ed33654968aaa347.gif

Also, this statement has limititations right?

"An airplane (like any other object) has potential energy proportional to its altitude. Every increment of altitude represents an increment of energy."

True - up until you start losing the earths gravitational pull... at which point you could land up at a very high altitude, with no potential energy. Right?

In relation to aeroplanes? Nope. You'll never get there.

Heard the yarn about a really long and fast conveyer belt? 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

  2. ...... i had a quick glance at it, and it seems a bit full on for a newbie....just my opinion, you may devaour it all no problems...Good stuff though:thumb_up:

Now, now Motz. . Don't stifle the young lad. (where's the 'stirring Motz up' smiley?)

The young bloke shows an eagerness to learn and I betcha he'll digest it in no time flat. ;)

    Tomo, here's another good one;

    See How It Flies

Reading through both of the sites will keep you occupied until you get yourself into formal training with an instructor. And they come at the right price!!

Like Motz says though tomo, grab a BAK text book when you get a chance.

    Cheers!

  3. Yeah, You wouldn't shell out nearly five hundred bucks for twenty minutes of complete and utter boredom would you... Me thinks probably more blissfully ignorant than fully aware though. You know, that sort of thing only happens to other people.

They were probably having a marvelous time up until it started to go pear shaped.

  4. G'day Blue.

I did learn why Mr Hemple no longer held ATPL or CPL and there is a fair chance that you are probably aware of why as well. I also reckon that Samantha 'assumed' rather than was misled. But then, misled sounds so much more sensational if one is writing a newspaper story or about to engage in a compensation claim.

    Cheers!

  5. .....

PS: Little birdie told me that we are close to 5,000 limit being lifted. There's a rumour that this might come with the CTA endorsement BEFORE 103 comes along!

And that will put this little black duck into airborne nirvana!

To be able to get high enough to get out of the bumps and bangs of summer (without feeling guilty) and to be able to get into YMAY or even YSCB if the mood takes me.

Please be nice to the little birdie for me!

Hey Cloudsuck! How well does the sierra barrel roll? 006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif

  6. True....

    G'day Geoff,

Back during training I was returning from out Mango way when I spotted a Jab about a thousand below and crossing our path. I'll 'fess and admit that while I knew he was in the area, I hadn't seen him until quite late.

When I mentioned this to my instructor, 'Rocker' if you know him, he commented that the Jab driver probably hadn't seen us either. He then said "you should swoop down behind him and shoot him and he'll never know where it came from". It just tickled my fancy at the time...006_laugh.gif.0f7b82c13a0ec29502c5fb56c616f069.gif.

  7. Don't know who it belongs to, but I'd be keen to see if they're interested in being part of a Sportstar squadron to be fitted out for Jabiru hunting sorties... Bloody Jabirus, they're almost a plague around here! 041_helmet.gif.78baac70954ea905d688a02676ee110c.gif

Come over for a visit Airsick and I'll shout you a blat in one. And we'll measure the virus up for machine guns while you're here.

    Cheers,

    Steven B.

(Bunkering down for return fire )

  8. ....Feel free to pass comment as I think this will be what I send the reporter.068_angry.gif.cc43c1d4bb0cee77bfbafb87fd434239.gif

    G'day Flyer,

Don't "do a Lou" and not properly research your message. Come back at her with facts presented without emotion or personal bias.

She's written a hastily constructed 'fluff' piece based on what appears to be a couple of minutes on Google and the RAA web site with the rest created by her imagination, personal bias and a thesaurus. Call her on that, with a well constructed promotion about recreational aviation instead.

    Cheers.

    Steven B.

  9. So, can you guys with a lot of experience tell me what you consider the 'minimum' requirement for XC / Nav.? i.e. I got my XC on a trike, with basic work because of the limitations of the trike; yet that XC endorsment then applies to HP 3-axis without any more work.... I'd like to go do a bit more with the local CFI...

First caveat; I don't profess to have a lot of XC experience, 'cuz I'm a woosy and haven't ventured further than 100nm from home.

The minimum ten, formally five, hours are just that. The minimum for the ticket.

If you want more training, even after being endorsed, go do it. There is no shame in seeking further training.

So, (just in case you need the extra motivation) go get the extra time with your CFI.... or else! 068_angry.gif.cc43c1d4bb0cee77bfbafb87fd434239.gif

    Cheers!

    Steven B.

  10. Get stuck into them and tell 'em to stop stuffing you around.

You're taking a proposal to make $$$ per annum for the next X years with very little risk to them. You should only have to demonstrate that you can service the loan and can provide some form of security.

We informed our bank upfront that the funds were for an aircraft and now we get to fly our home improvement loan around on weekends - Even got to haggle a better interest rate.

Be polite but don't take any crap from them. They are in the business of selling finance so make them work to get your business.

I wish you luck but you shouldn't really need it....;)

    Cheers!

  11. Ahlocks is (obliquely) correct, there is a long history.

Well, you did ask what "I'd" do... :raise_eyebrow: and I definitely put a lot of consideration into point 1 and point 2 before opening my yap. Otherwise I'd get into more trouble than I already do. :black_eye:

But, when I'm right and the offender is wrong and want's to deny it, paperwork is my the weapon of choice. In my experience, the majority of issues are sorted at point 3 and by the time you get to point 4 the offender has figured out that you are not mucking around.

You intimated that nothing would be done if you chased the issue. Coroners, courts and litigators love a paper trail that records who did what or who didn't act on an issue and that tends to stir the bureaucracy along. ;)

    Cheers!

    Steven B.

  12. What would I do......

    1. Assess my motive for taking any action. i.e. can I justify what I am about to do as being reasonable and not driven by an ulterior motive?

    2. Consider how my intervention is likely to be received and what outcome is likely to be achieved.

    3. Conduct an informal approach and offer assistance to correct problem.

    If the issue is not resolved;

    4. Present evidence, relevant legislation, code of practice, etc., to support my intervention at a formal meeting and document that meeting.

    5. Start working up through the chain of command with above documentation and continue recording an audit trail until the issue is resolved.

Dobbers wear nappies? yeah sometimes.... and sometimes you've got to put the nappy on and dob if the issue is serious enough to warrant it.

My opinion - make absolutely sure that you can justify in good faith that the issue is not just a difference of opinion and warrants pursuing further and then see it through to the end. Definitely keep accurate records of who was informed about the issue but chose to do nothing about it.

    Regards,

    Steven B.

(I'm still left wondering why a CP doesn't know how to play these sort of games..)

  13. Of course not HPD! No one simply forgets to remove their keys from the ignition!

It was a plot to kill umpteen thousand cottonwool wrapped brats who otherwise would be culled by natural selection.

    Bloody terramysts I tell you!

    Phil,

    Sensible reply!

    Cheers!

  14. G'day OME,

Can't offer much help with the prop pitch. I only ever potter around at 85~95 knots @ 4900 to 5200rpm. It'll probably do the 103kts as per the book, but I'm mostly poking around locally at 2500ft doing 'jollies' with relatives and work mates and haven't tried to wring its neck yet. I probably should experiment a bit more...

Took it up to 7000 for the first time today though. the view just keeps getting better and better!

Cheers and G'day to Ding for me.

    Steven B.

  15. Version 5.4 hasn't made any difference.thumb_down

The clock was slow after switch off at ~ 17:30 on 29 July. Today it showed 1st Aug 2008 ~ 21:44. Actual time was 3 Aug @ 14:35.

I haven't ever had to do a user reset to get it to acquire though.

The usual gripe about no satellites came up. Hit 'stored without battery' and it's good to go by taxi time - about 3 - 4 minutes.

My unit has had the issue since day dot, but I did do an update when it first arrived. I just can't remember precisely whether it was to version 5.0 or 5.1.

I'm pondering if it is an incremental update issue and a factory reset and then reloading the firmware without using the web updater might help.040_nerd.gif.a6a4f823734c8b20ed33654968aaa347.gif

    Cheers!

  16. Oh Ross, Damn it !

I feel your hurt... 051_crying.gif.fe5d15edcc60afab3cc76b2638e7acf3.gif Sounds like you had what I probably dread the most.

A minor(ish) bingle on landing that breaks "the pride and joy", and one's pride for that matter, and the inevitable self questioning of ones ability and decision making.

Good on you for your prompt and candid post. I hope that you can take some consolation from knowing that the writing of your experience here, will prevent the same heartache from occurring to someone else in the future.

    Regards

  17. .... decent people know and appreciate that which is why we do it but those that don't appreciate it I don't think deserve to benefit from this resource at all.

Hey, I'm decent (well, i do swear a lot, but otherwise I'm decent).

Ian, I appreciate what you're doing and am happy enough to abide by the rules. But it's difficult, and somewhat risky, to hook in and debate a 'hot' issue seriously because there's a better than average chance that someone's going to get offended. This makes the debate, while very civilised, a bit one sided and well...artificial. Like I said in my first post, maybe it's just me...031_loopy.gif.e6c12871a67563904dadc7a0d20945bf.gif

I'm not suggesting reducing the forum into chaos, but there are underlying issues that are left unaddressed. Some squabbles need to be finalised publicly, like Andy mentioned, otherwise, it's same bull paddies (doing my best not to swear), different day.

Having now had my little rant, I shall retreat to my corner of the sandpit and keep my observations and opinion to myself like a good decent chap. :black_eye:

    Cheers!

    Steven B.

P.S. Can't go flying 'cuz the weather sucks. thumb_down
