  1. G'day Mick and thanks.

Took 'she who must be obeyed' for her first flight late this afternoon. She thoroughly enjoyed it. I kept the flight short this time though!

It really is great sharing the experience. I can't emphasise it enough. It's like the magic of my first time flying all over again. They see stuff that I didn't/don't because I'm too busy flying the plane. Talking about the flight(s) afterwards is special in itself.

I'll have to get one of them to take some photos. Some bloke has made a large dam in the shape of a love heart to the north of town. Things you would never know unless you are a couple of thousand feet up...

You're right about the Sportstar seats. They came out quickly. A quick clean up and a bit of fabric freshener 'just in case' and problem is solved. We now have some zip lock bags (to put IN the headset case) if it ever happens again. Mind you, miss 18 y/o has been bragging about "chucking up" in the plane to her mates ever since. She's lined up for another go, but as she's out on the 'turps' tonight, I don't think it will happen this weekend.

Still haven't found a new home for 4010?

    Spoilt b@stard.... two planes...

    Cheers,

    Steven B.

  2. The legendary Wal signed me off with the Pax endo yesterday, so wasting no time I took my first victim (daughter) for a run around Wagga City and then off to the training area to the north.

Nice and early before the thermals and taxing out to 05. "You nervous?", I asked miss 18 y/o. "Nope, let's do it" she replied. Run ups done and lined up and while opening the 'taps'. "I'm nervous now!" she says.

A text book take off and climb out and away we went. a few little burbles from time to time but otherwise it was smooth and she was thoroughly enjoying the ride and the view.

Anyway, to cut a long story short. Don't take 'em up for too long because the seats are now out of the plane and airing after being washed and headset cases make poor spew bags.

Where do you get airsick bags from?

All in all, it's great to be able to share the experience with the family, but I think I've learned that the first flights have to be kept short!

    Cheers,

    Steven B.

  3. Hi Geoff,

Unfortunately I missed the meeting owing to unforseen work commitments involving big red trucks.(The same ones that visit 'The Lawson' from time to time)

The feed back I got from 'Rocker' and Chris C is that Unicom wasn't overly welcome but it's going to go ahead anyway. I was at a local comms supplier and the tech was commenting that he had a quote for Air Services to supply the base radio.

The frequency change is a bit of a mystery other than would fit into the time frame.

I haven't found any reference anywhere else, so it looks like I'm going to have to update my charts sooner rather than later.

    Cheers,

    Steven B.

This shoots my theory to poo....

Airservices Australia is introducing a trial Unicom service starting late 2007 at Dubbo and Wagga Wagga regional NSW airports.

The Unicom Services concept involves a skilled Unicom station operator providing the following information:

    • Advisory traffic information in the immediate terminal airspace and movement area

    • Meteorological information such as factual statements about the weather

    • Emergency services alerting

    • Other aerodrome information as requested by pilots which could include runway surface conditions and availability of fuel services

The service will be provided on the existing CTAF/R frequency and the operating hours of the trial will generally be determined by Regular Public Transport schedules.

  4. Congrats Megavar.

You must have been one of the (many) students that has been keeping him busy as of late. He's a great bloke Wally. Gotta love his accent and expressions!

And may I take this opportunity to brag that Wally signed me off for my certificate today!!

I've still got a bit more solo time to do for the passenger endorsment, but a few circuits, a lap around the 25 nm limit or the X country endorsment will see that done.

G'day Leeton Ross and where were you hiding Roger??

  5. Tony,

    Thank you!

You and the participants of this thread have helped solved a LOT of heartache that has been going on with us over the last few weeks. We initially purchased our plane for my son and I to learn to fly with and for my son to use to progress on to a career in aviation. We had considered that cross hiring the aircraft would subsidise our ownership of the aircraft.

Ever had that nagging, gut wrenching feeling that you are about to do something that you will regret? Well cross hiring is it for us!

We've never doubted that the prospective hirer is reputable, but rather their perception and objectives for the aircraft differ from ours. We look after and keep our belongings and business plant in as near to pristine condition as is practical.

They perceive the aircraft as a machine to generate business and create income.

A perfectly good plan for a business, but not with our pride and joy.

Our biggest concern was the accelerated wear and tear of the aircraft. Stories of engines not making TBO when used 'on line' and that the aircraft may well not be available for us when we want it.

If anyone is considering cross hiring their aircraft, don't forget to factor the emotional side of it as well. Your new pride and joy is very likely to end up looking very tired, very quickly.

So, thanks again. It may not have turned out to be a problem, but it's a risk we're not going to take. And it feels so much better having finally made the decision!

    Cheers,

    Steven B.

  6. Steve Beck (ahlocks) from Wagga (Wagga) together with his instructor Greg Wardman was also doing his thing in a brand new low wing Sportstar of which I did not get a photo while Wally and I were enjoying ourselves in the J230C.

    Hi Ross and group,

I've been meaning to post a 'skite report' but I've been as busy as a one handed paper hanger since 5059 arrived. ARGH! I've even lost the rego card for it. Bloody good safe place I've hidden it in.;)

Anyway, Here's some photos. I've got no idea how to add captions...

    Cheers 'til later.

  7. Hey Guys, do I need to have a joystick and rudder pedals for this sim or will keyboard and mouse suffice ?;)

Definitely get at least a joystick. Preferably one with a twist axis for rudder. Better yet, is a joystick or yoke AND a set of rudder pedals. It moves the sim from being a good game to being a really good introduction to flying.

    Cheers,

    Steven B.

  8. I completed my first solo today after just shy of ten hours duel. I could have done it one or two hours ago according to my instructor, but I just wasn't happy with the consistency of my round outs. I thought "screw it". What's the rush to solo?

I want to be what I call 'bomb proof' when flying. That is, to have the routine down to a point that when a distraction arises, flying is basically muscle memory while I deal with the distraction. To lower the work load so to speak.

It worked. My solo wasn't an earth shattering event or better than sex for me. It was routine. I still made errors and had a touch of butterflies mid downwind but routine kicked in. The butterflies were dispensed with and the error(s) corrected. The landing was tidy and a mile stone ticked up with a smug grin.

My point, apart from bragging that I finally got around to it, don't be rushed to solo. You alone will know when your are ready. And thank you to the participants of this site for the collective wisdom displayed here.

Oh yeah, 'Crash Lander' (Chris?) it's your bloody fault that I started this little adventure.

    Cheers,

    Steven B

  9. Yep, If you want to see up close and personal, go to Temora.

I was over there for the FA18s a couple of months ago. Comments from well travelled airshow devotees was that they had never been so close to the action. The F111 was good, but the FA18s won hands down for quality and duration of display.

It's a credit to the township and the owner(?) of the facility.
