  1. FAA Proposes Rule to Enhance Safety and Performance of Light Sport Aircraft

    Wednesday, July 19, 2023

WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is planning to enhance the safety and performance of Light Sport Aircraft operations. The proposed Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rule would put performance safety standards around larger aircraft that innovators are building by expanding the definition of Light Sport Aircraft.

"This rule will encourage manufactures to make Light Sport Aircraft operations safer, more versatile and accessible while maintaining rigorous safety standards," said Acting FAA Associate Administrator for Safety David Boulter.

Under the proposal, the aircraft’s weight limit is based on its stall speed. By permitting higher stall speeds, the proposal would bring within the Light Sport Aircraft regulatory framework aircraft weighing as much as 3,000 pounds. This more than doubles the weight of aircraft under the current definition of Light Sport of 1,320 pounds, allowing larger and stronger aircraft to qualify as Light Sport.

The proposal would also expand the type of aircraft sport pilots can operate and allows them to use their aircraft for a wider range of operations such as some aerial work. Although sport pilots could operate aircraft designed with up to four seats, they would remain limited to operating with only one passenger.

The public has 90 days to comment on the proposed rule once it is published in the Federal Register. The FAA will publish a final rule and respond to comments after the comment period closes.

Looking at the Wikipedia page for the RJ03, while weights were well within the old LSA limits, at the quoted stall speed of 51kt, that puts it out of the LSA class, am I correct?

I realsie I said yes to your question about stall speed, but according to the RAAus delegates that did a talk at the local aero club about the new regulation coming in with the 760Kg limit, they are also scrapping the stall limit requirement completly which means that the IBIS and many other aircraft will be allowed to be registered RAAus.

We all know the dangers of quad bikes and I am sure Kiwi knew them just as much as we do.  We don't know exactly what happened, but in my estimation Kiwi was aware of any dangers. It could have been a moments inattention, or a mechanical failure, who knows, but Kiwi was careful with all he did in my experience.

    Spot on Yenn.

The accidnet happened at a creekbed at dusk and Kiwi could have disturbed some kangaroos or some cattle and rolled trying to avoid them; unfortunately we never know what happened, except that we lost a very good friend.

  4.  I Don't know if anyone has heard but; Allan "Kiwi" Andrew from Old Station at Raglan, Queensland passed away late yesterday after an accident with a quadbike rollover at the Old Station property.

He has been a good friend to a mass of people over the years and will be sorely missed by everyone

Kiwi has been one of the mainstays of the Old Station Flyin since it's inception and is known to everyone that attends with his white Chrysler Centura Convertible attending to the smooth running of the many operations at the Flyin

Fly high with your eagles my good friend

I haven't talked to Ronnie or Helen for some time. I know they did consider having it this year, but some other club got in and booked the date they wanted.

When I last talked to Kiwi, who is the club President he didn't have any firm plans. I ill have to se what is happening, because if it goes ahead I will be there unless something serious happens.

I used to be a club member, but haven't renewed for a year or so.

I was talking to Kiwi on Saturday night at a party and thats when he told me it will be on in 2021.

  6. I do have a set of plans for the Mini Imp but I wanted to see what the opinions of other were about this aircraft.

I prefer a 2 seat side by side, eliminate the tail shaft and make it a mid fuselage prop drive (belt drive reduction is all thats needed).

The Mini Imp would have to be scaled up by 10% to suit my ideas and would still keep it nice and compact.

Construction would be composite fuselage with metal wings and tail; engine 80hp

    On paper it looks doable.

  7. I think I'll have to refrase my question.

I don't require any information off the internet as I have all of it; and some.

    What I should have said:

"Anyone building, or know of someone building a Taylor MINI IMP here in Australia.

I'd like to know more about the building process."
